APRIL, 2018 EASTERN CHURCHES NEWS: EDITED BY FR. RON ROBERSON SEIA NEWSLETTER On the Eastern Churches and Ecumenism Number 271: April 30, 2018 Washington, DC The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Considers Requests for Ukrainian Autocephaly PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE PETRO POROSHENKO ON TUESDAY, APRIL 17, ANNOUNCED THE START OF THE PROCEDURE FOR THE CREATION OF A UNIFIED UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH. The relevant agreement was reached at 7-hour long negotiations between Poroshenko and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Synod members held during a presidential visit to Turkey, Poroshenko said at a meeting with heads of parliamentary factions on Tuesday. "Ukraine is as close as ever to the emergence of its own Unified Orthodox Church," the president said, adding that he cannot elaborate on all details of the agreements reached. A number of elements are needed for the process to see success, including, a corresponding appeal from UOC of the Kyiv Patriarchate and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which has already been signed to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in a rare united move of the two churches, according to Poroshenko. Poroshenko expressed hope that the new UOC would be created before the 1030th anniversary of baptism of the Kyiv Rus and called on Parliament to support the appeal to Constantinople. The president called the developments around a possible creation of a United Orthodox Church which would not be subordinate to Moscow a "historic event." The president ruled out the possibility of banning any other churches in Ukraine and noted that the state will remain separated from church. – Unian, April 17. TODAY, APRIL 19, UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS UPHELD THE PETITION OF PETRO POROSHENKO TO THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH ASKING HIM TO GRANT THE TOMOS OF AUTOCEPHALY TO THE ORTHODOX CHURCH IN UKRAINE.

From April 18 to 20, 2013, the Stamford Eparchy held an Eparchial Sobor on the theme: “The Vibrant parish – a place to encounter the living Christ.” Almost 200 delegates (priests, religious and lay representatives) gathered from all corners of the eparchy in St. Basil Seminary in Stamford, Connecticut. Under the leadership of His Excellency Most Rev. Paul Chomnycky, OSBM, Eparch of Stamford, the delegates reaffirmed that in close communion with the bishop, our parishes must play a fundamental role in the spreading of the faith in Christ. For it is in our parish communities that the faithful most frequently encounter Christ through Christian instruction, community prayer and service to one’s neighbor. And so in promoting and enlivening our parish life, we also enliven the entire Church. On behalf of the Sobor delegates Bishop Paul Chomnycky sent greetings to His Holiness Pope Francis and His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav. Among the guests of the Sobor were: His Grace Metropolitan Stefan Soroka of Philadelphia, His Excellency Bishop Ken Nowakowski of New Westminster, His Excellency Bishop Basil H. Losten of Stamford, and Father Andrew Onuferko of Ottawa, Canada. The delegates to the Eparchial Sobor reaffirmed and resolved to preserve and foster our spiritual treasure of the Byzantine-Kyivan tradition: its liturgy, theology, and spirituality, and deeply desired to share our spiritual treasure with all who wish to encounter Christ with us in our parish communities.

Christ is among us! In order to help curb the spread of the Coronavirus the civil and health authorities in our country have extended the “Stay at Home Order” until the end of April 2020. Out of deep concern for the spiritual and physical well-being of all persons —we the bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in America urge you at this crucial time to enter more deeply into the very heart of our Christian faith while following the directives of civil authorities. We ask you to celebrate the great mysteries of our salvation in Christ’s Death and Resurrection at home. Together with you, we recognize the sacrifice we are all called to make by being physically distanced from the Holy Week and Pascha services in church and from one another. Trusting in the graces flowing from the celebration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord, we remain mindful that paschal joy has its source in a personal encounter with the Risen Christ. What did it take for Mary Magdalene’s tears to give way to Easter joy? Nothing less than meeting the risen Christ! The Easter Gospel is not only about Christ’s passage from death to life, but also about the encounter Mary has with the Lord.
