It examines the practices of knowledge production on Russia and the Soviet Union during the Finnish interwar period. Th e point of departure for this endeavour is the recognition that knowledge production is not an act of one’s subjectivity. It involves placing oneself within a tradition of interpreta- tion. In the study at hand, I examine how the Finnish ways of making sense of Russia unfold against the background of previous knowledge and experience which is wider than that of an individual interpreter. Similarly, this piece of research should not be read as an act of my subjectivity only. -

rnmPERE TAMPERE GUIDE PUBLISHED BY THE MUNICIPAL BOARD OF TRAVEL TAMPERE A HISTORICAL SUMMARY HPhe vicinity of the city is of very old origin. The scientists consider its age in millions of years and the most parts of Finland are geologically the oldest in Europe. A little to the north of Tampere, in Aitolahti, the oldest rock in the world has been found. The history of Kinlands shows that a steadily resident Finnish popula- tion lived about Tampere already in the 6th century. On the Pyynikki ridge and along the shores of Pyhäjärvi-lake there have been pagan sacri- fices and not far from the city the remains of an old fortress have been found. Around the waterfalls of Tampere in very early times the traders of the interior already came to barter. This Was due to the excellent Water- ways, and in due time, although very late, the city was founded. This happened in 1779, during the reign of king Gustaphus 111 of Sweden. The first map shows 56 lots, but they had to be divided between 80 applicants and these formed the first population of the city-to-be. A map on the last page indicates how the city has grown since. The founder of the City, kintf Oustaphus 111 The waterfall was) from the of Sweden. very beginning the nucleus of Tampere. Several manufacturers tried to exploit its power, but only in 1783 the first real factory, a paper mill was founded. Its premises are now owned by the city. The biggest factory was foun- ded in 1820 by Finlayson, a Scotchman and it still bears his name. -
Cultural Trauma of the Civil War of 1918 Staged and Commemorated in Finland
NORDIC THEATRE STUDIES Vol. 31, No. 2. 2019, 102–131 Cultural Trauma of the Civil War of 1918 Staged and Commemorated in Finland PENTTI PAAVOLAINEN ABSTRACT: The Centennial of one of the cruelest of European civil wars fought in Finland between the Reds and the Whites from January to May 1918 has evoked a spectrum of theatre productions illustrating variations of styles and approaches on the events. The turn in the treatment of this cultural trauma occurred with the interpretations and narrative perspectives that were fixed in the 1960s, when an understanding for the defeated Red side was expressed in historiography, literature and theatre. Since that, the last six decades the Finnish theatre and public discourse on the Civil War have been dominated by the Red narrative as the memory of the 1918 Civil War provided an important part in the new identity politics for the 1969 generation. Since the 1980’s the topic was mostly put aside so that before the 2018 revivals of the Civil War topic, the productions seem to have been reactions by the artists confronting the developments at the end of the Cold War. Some theatrical events can even be tied to the cultural trauma of the 1969 left evoked by the collapse of the socialist block. The Centennial productions repeated the Red narrative but they also provided more balanced interpretations on the tragic events. Poor Theatre, Rich Theatre: Layers of Exchange in Two Adaptations of Ingmar Bergman and Paavo Haavikko
Nordic Theatre Studies 144 Vol. 30, No.1. 2018, 144–164. Poor Theatre, Rich Theatre: Layers of Exchange in Two Adaptations of Ingmar Bergman and Paavo Haavikko TEEMU PAAVOLAINEN ABSTRACT The article analyzes two Finnish theatre adaptations of Fanny och Alexander, by Ingmar Bergman, and Rauta-aika, by Paavo Haavikko, premiered in 2010 and 2011 respective- ly. The key question is, how the two works brought the filmic originals’ wealth of material to theatrically manageable proportions, and how the themes of poverty and prosperity were developed by their scenic machineries – a question of theatricality, but also, if you will, of a sort of theatrical exchange: “golden age” to exile or decline in the story-worlds, lavish film to theatrical constraint in production. The first two sections take a specifically economic perspective on the original TV projects and their central storylines; the two final sections address how these storylines were locally woven by the revolving stage and the revolving auditorium used in the theatre productions. On various levels, a play- fully “monetary” distinction of metonymy and metaphor is suggested in which metonymic contiguity stands for contextual prosperity (as experience, community, immediacy), met- aphoric substitution for relative deprivation (as distance, abstraction, exchange). KEYWORDS Ingmar Bergman, dramaturgy, Paavo Haavikko, metaphor and metonymy, scenography, theatricality ISSN 2002–3898 © Teemu Paavolainen and Nordic Theatre Studies PEER REVIEWED ARTICLE Open access: https://tidsskrift.dk/nts/index Published with support from Nordic Board for Periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOP-HS) Nordic Theatre Studies 145 Poor Theatre, Rich Theatre: Layers of Exchange in Two Adaptations of Ingmar Bergman and Paavo Haavikko INTRODUCTION In the history of Nordic television, the year 1982 stands out with two specific works, both of a magnitude and material abundance not seen before and not likely seen since. -
Impact of Tampere Region Festivals and Cultural Attractions in 2013
DEVELOPING CULTURAL TOURISM IN THE TAMPERE REGION Impact of Tampere Region Festivals and Cultural Attractions in 2013 Introduction In 2012–2014, Tampere Region Festivals – Pirfest ry and Innolink Research Oy carried out a survey on the regional economic impact of cultural tourism and the quality of tourist attractions in the Tampere region. The survey was carried out as a visitor survey combined with visitor information received from the attractions. It involved 37 member festivals of Pirfest ry/Tampere Region Festivals, 34 cultural and tourist attractions in the Tampere region and 13 hotels. The attractions surveyed were located in 10 different municipalities in the Tampere region. The list of participants is included at the end of this report. The visitor survey was completed by 13,523 people, so it was exceptionally extensive in scope. According to the survey, the festivals and attractions attracted a total of 2.5 million visitors, who contributed €253 million to the local economy. Of this, €139.3 million consisted of tourism income brought by tourists from outside the Tampere region and €113 million was local tourism income from within the region. The Finnish Tourist Board defines cultural tourism as follows: “Cultural tourism produces tourism products and services and offers them on business grounds to locals and people from else- where, respecting regional and local cultural resources. The purpose is to create great experiences and give people the chance to get to know these cultural resources, learn from them or participate in them. This strengthens the formation of people’s identity and their understanding and appreciation of both their own culture and other cultures.” MIKKO KESÄ, RESEARCH & SALES DIRECTOR AT INNOLINK RESEARCH OY, STATES THE FOLLOWING ON THE RELIABILITY OF THE SURVEY: The survey was completed by over 13,000 respondents, so recreational services; other spending). -
