Exhibition “Moomin Animations – Thrills and Cuddles” coming to National Children’s Museum in D.C. August 13, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Moomins, the beloved fairytale creatures living in Moominvalley and created by Finnish author Tove Jansson, are the subject of a visiting exhibition at National Children’s Museum as of September. The upcoming exhibition, on loan from the world’s only Moomin Museum located in Tampere, Finland, showcases the universal values of the Moomins, such as equality, inclusion and respect for nature. The exhibition, Moomin Animations – Thrills and Cuddles, which is brought to the United States by the Embassy of Finland in Washington D.C., will open at National Children’s Museum on September 3, 2021, and will be on display inside the Visiting Exhibit Hall until January 9, 2022. This is the first time this exhibition travels abroad. It highlights the rich history of Moomin animations, which are based on the Moomin books and comic strips created by the renowned Finnish artist and author Tove Jansson (1914–2001). The Moomins are white and roundish fantastical characters with large snouts. The Moomin family and their friends live an adventurous life in the idyllic and peaceful Moominvalley. “The Moomins always treat nature with respect and live in harmony with the environment. The Moomin values, such as compassion and open-mindedness, are current, independent of time and place, and more relevant than perhaps ever before. As we follow the stories of Moomintroll’s growth and encounters, we can learn more about our own humanity, relationships and emotions,” explains Roleff Kråkström, Managing Director of Moomin Characters. -

We are excited to announce the participation of several excellent invited speakers, from various European countries. The meeting will begin Wednesday morning with a workshop on desmoid tumors arranged by SSG together with EURACAN. The participants will get the opportunity to hear about the various diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of this disease and discuss some difficult cases. Basic research, diagnostics and treatment of bone- and soft tissue sarcoma will be extensively covered throughout the meeting. A session will be dedicated to immunotherapy, with a focus on why it has not been as effective in sarcomas as in other cancers and how to learn from that when designing new immunotherapy trials in sarcomas. As a new feature we will dedicate a session to give young Nordic PhD students from all disciplines to present their PhD projects. The idea is not (only) to present completed and finished projects but also projects in the process of being written to create discussions, generate ideas and help the young researchers liaise with other researchers and may be expand their projects and create future collaborations. We hope to receive a lot of abstracts with description of PhD projects for this session. -

Metsä , A park themed on “The Moomins”, the first outside Finland, will be opened at Lake Miyazawa in 2017! FinTech Global Incorporated (head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; president: Nobumitsu Tamai; hereafter, “FGI”) will open a gateway to the world of the Moomins—highly popular characters in their homeland of Finland as well as Japan—with a theme park built over an expansive area with Lake Miyazawa as the centerpiece in the city of Hanno, Saitama Prefecture. This will be the first true-to-original Moomin-themed facility, apart from Moominworld—a theme park in Finland, the birthplace of Moomin creator Tove Jansson—that features the lovable characters. For the opening of this facility, FGI and the city of Hanno, Saitama Prefecture (mayor: Masaru Okubo; hereafter “Hanno”) signed a Basic Agreement on Local Renaissance (hereafter, “the Agreement”) that sets out parameters for the theme park development as well as coordination and cooperation on other aspects that will help promote tourism in Hanno. Essentially the Agreement underpins joint efforts to attract tourists to the theme park and to Hanno. The land itself will be sold to FGI by the current owner of the property, Seibu Railway Co., Ltd. (head office: Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture; president: Hisashi Wakabayashi; hereafter, “Seibu Railway”). Around 1960, Seibu Railway began building recreational facilities at Lake Miyazawa, including Lakeside Park Miyazawako. The majestic landscape, showcased by the lake itself and the forested lands around it, is the perfect setting for the world of Moominvalley, a place of great natural beauty that is home to the Moomins, and to emphasize the concept of coexisting with nature, which is an enduring theme in the Moomin stories. -
