    A PRELIMINARY CHECKLIST OF ARIZONA MACROFUNGI Scott T. Bates School of Life Sciences Arizona State University PO Box 874601 Tempe, AZ 85287-4601 ABSTRACT A checklist of 1290 species of nonlichenized ascomycetaceous, basidiomycetaceous, and zygomycetaceous macrofungi is presented for the state of Arizona. The checklist was compiled from records of Arizona fungi in scientific publications or herbarium databases. Additional records were obtained from a physical search of herbarium specimens in the University of Arizona’s Robert L. Gilbertson Mycological Herbarium and of the author’s personal herbarium. This publication represents the first comprehensive checklist of macrofungi for Arizona. In all probability, the checklist is far from complete as new species await discovery and some of the species listed are in need of taxonomic revision. The data presented here serve as a baseline for future studies related to fungal biodiversity in Arizona and can contribute to state or national inventories of biota. INTRODUCTION Arizona is a state noted for the diversity of its biotic communities (Brown 1994). Boreal forests found at high altitudes, the ‘Sky Islands’ prevalent in the southern parts of the state, and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa P.& C. Lawson) forests that are widespread in Arizona, all provide rich habitats that sustain numerous species of macrofungi. Even xeric biomes, such as desertscrub and semidesert- grasslands, support a unique mycota, which include rare species such as Itajahya galericulata A. Møller (Long & Stouffer 1943b, Fig. 2c). Although checklists for some groups of fungi present in the state have been published previously (e.g., Gilbertson & Budington 1970, Gilbertson et al. 1974, Gilbertson & Bigelow 1998, Fogel & States 2002), this checklist represents the first comprehensive listing of all macrofungi in the kingdom Eumycota (Fungi) that are known from Arizona.

(2008) iii iv Abstract Sampling of the macrofungal sporocarps, ectomycorrhizal morphotypes and vascular plants was carried out in 28 plots from four forest types (ash, oak, Scot’s pine, Sitka spruce) between the years 2007 and 2009. A total of 409 macrofungal species, 51 ectomycorrhizal morphotypes and 68 vascular plant species were recorded over the three years. It was found that at equal sampling intensities, there were no significant differences in total macrofungal species or ectomycorrhizal morphotype richness between the oak, Scot’s pine and Sitka spruce forest types.

Tokumasu3 Key words Abstract The class Dacrymycetes is a rather small group of brown-rot wood-decaying jelly fungi characterised by forked basidia and an orange to yellow gelatinous to cartilaginous fruit body. In Japan, dacrymycetous fungi had Dacrymycetes not been investigated for a long time, justifying a taxonomic re-examination. In the present study we attempted Japanese species an investigation of the dacrymycetous fungal flora of Japan, and recognised 28 taxonomic entities, including five molecular phylogeny new taxa, i.e. Dacrymyces ancyleus, D. aureosporus, D. pinacearum, D. subarcticus and Dacryopinax spheno- new species carpa, and nine new records. Due to the present survey, the total number of dacrymycetous species recorded taxonomy from Japan increased from 28 to 42. Of the newly described species, Dacrymyces ancyleus is characterised by recurved, cylindrical basidiocarps and hyphae with clamp connections. Dacrymyces aureosporus resembles D. chrysospermus, but differs in wall thickness of its marginal hyphae. Dacrymyces pinacearum and D. subarcticus represent new coelomycetous anamorphic species. Dacryopinax sphenocarpa has sharp, spathulate basidiocarps, and hyphae with clamp connections. Descriptions, illustrations and photographs of fruit bodies are presented with some taxonomic notes. Molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted to verify the species identification, and the remaining problems in Dacrymycetes taxonomy are discussed based on these data. V8Z 1M5 2 Introduction Unlike vascular plants, macrofungi of British Columbia are little known and documented in literature. In 1976, Bandoni and Szczawinski published the second edition of their concise pictorial guidebook to BC mushrooms. Gamiet and Berch, (1992) provide a species list from an old growth forest in Vancouver area. Countess (2001) investigated the impact of clear-cutting and forest age on macrofungi in old-growth and post-harvest chronosequences of Douglas-fir dominated in Shawnigan Lake District. Goodman (1995) and Goodman and Trofymow (1998) had previously used the same Douglas-fir stands as Countess (2001) to study distribution of ectomycorrhizal morphotypes. Outerbridge (2002) analyzed diversity and abundance of ectomycorrhizal and saprobic mushrooms in 35 year old monocultures of four conifer species on south Vancouver Island. Redhead (1997) estimated that there may be as many as 2500 species in the group of fleshy mushrooms (i.e. agarics, boleti, chanterelles) in the province and lists all the recorded reports. These amount to circa 500 species, a fraction of the potentially occurring diversity.
