Pożaryski 1974; Brzezińska-Wójcik & Harasimiuk 2013) Te main elements of the geolo- gical structure are carbonate and silica-carbonate rocks susceptible to weathering, erosive and soil-forming processes Roztocze is also an area, which is signifcantly afected by the two main climate zones of Europe – the damp and warm Atlantic zone from the west, and the dry and cooler continental zone from the east (Kozłowska et al 2015ab) Roztocze is a transboundary area of Poland and Ukraine (Fig 1) It is a clearly uplifed range of hills which separates the Wyżyna Lubelska upland (Poland) and the Wyżyna Podolska (Podilska Vysochyna) upland (Ukraine) abutting Roztocze from north and south, respectively Te above-mentioned geological factors signifcantly impact the geobotanical diversity of the region, and hence the broad diversity and species richness of living organisms Te sub- stantial natural values of Roztocze were the reason for the establishment of two national parks: the Roztocze National Park (1974, in Poland) and the Yavoriv National Park (1998, in Ukraine) (Fig 2) In addition, 5 landscape parks, 3 landscape protected areas and 13 nature reserves were designated in this area, whereas within the ‘Natura 2000’ network a series of habitats were estab- lished, being of priority signifcance for the European Union (Grabowski et al 2015c; Stachyra 2018 – http://roztoczanskipn pl/pl/w-skrocie/natura-2000) Recently, eforts have been initiated to extend the Ukrainian biosphere reserve Roztochia into a transboundary one that would also cover Polish part of the Roztocze region (Chmielewski 2013; Grabowski et al 2013; Kałamucka & Grabowski 2013; Lorens & Stachyra 2013) For many years the area of Roztocze has been the subject of specialized environmental studies, including botanical, zoological, ecological, geological, hydrological, as well as myco- logical ones Te research results were published in many original research papers, analytic and synthetic monographs and papers popularizing science, as well as being presented during scientifc conferences Some of the studies deserve special attention At the end of the twentieth century, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Roztocze National Park, the frst synthetic study of this region was published in Poland (Wilgat 1994), while the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the park was the reason for the preparation of another, supplemented, updated and signifcantly extended monograph (Reszel & Grądziel 2013) It summarized the current state of knowledge in the feld of natural as well as social and cultural sciences Two years later, as part of the Polish-Ukrainian cooperation, a project dedicated to 10 Introduction the recognition of nature in the entire Roztocze region (both Polish and Ukrainian) was carried out It also resulted in the publication of a comprehensive monograph (Grabowski et al 2015a) Fig 1 Te Roztocze region – location and topography [adapted from Buraczyński et al.
