Beetles (Coleoptera) of the Shell Picture Card Series: Buprestidae by Dr Trevor J
Calodema Supplementary Paper No. 30 (2007) Beetles (Coleoptera) of the Shell Picture Card series: Buprestidae by Dr Trevor J. Hawkeswood* *PO Box 842, Richmond, New South Wales, Australia, 2753 (www.calodema.com) Hawkeswood, T.J. (2007). Beetles (Coleoptera) of the Shell Picture Card series: Buprestidae. Calodema Supplementary Paper No. 30 : 1-7. Abstract: Cards depicting Buprestidae species (Coleoptera) from Australia in the Shell Picture Card series entitled Australian Beetles (1965) are reviewed in this paper. The original cards are supplied as illustrations with the original accompanying data. Comments on these data are provided wherever applicable. Introduction During the early to mid 1960’s the Shell Petroleum Company issued a number of Picture Card series dealing with the fauna and flora of Australia. The cards were handed out free at Shell service stations across the country (when petrol stations did give proper service!) and were housed in an album which was purchased separately. This paper reviews the Buprestidae (Coleoptera) of the Australian Beetles series (card numbers 301-360)(1965). The other beetle groups will be dealt with in other papers. The reason for these papers is to provide the illustrations and data for future workers since the Shell Picture Card series are rare and have seldom been referred to as a result. The nomenclature used here generally follows that of Bellamy (2003). Species Card no. 315 - Regal Jewel Beetle, Calodema regale (Laporte & Gory) [as Calodema regalis L.& G.] Card data: “This magnificent insect is extremely well named because it is one of the most beautiful members of the Jewel Beetle family (Buprestidae). -

Seven New Species of Cyphogastra DEYR. from New Guinea with Remarks on the Albertisi-Circle (Buprestidae: Buprestini: Chrysochroina) Roman B
Procrustomachia Occasional Papers of the Uncensored Scientists Group 4, 3: 26-38 Milanówek 29 VI 2019 ISSN 2543-7747 ___________________________________________________________________________ Seven new species of Cyphogastra DEYR. from New Guinea with remarks on the Albertisi-circle (Buprestidae: Buprestini: Chrysochroina) Roman B. HOŁYŃSKI PL-05822 Milanówek, ul. Graniczna 35, skr. poczt. 65, POLAND e-mail: [email protected] Introduction The nominotypical subgenus of Cyphogastra DEYR., one of the most speciose genera of large Buprestidae LEACH, seems (HOŁYŃSKI 2016) to have originated at the northwestern end of the Palaeomelanesian (HOŁYŃSKI 2001) chain of archipelagoes now accreted to New Guinea, and on that “superisland” has attained its greatest degree of diversification: the present state of knowledge does not allow to quote exact values, but anyway the New Guinean representatives of the taxon make an ssemblage at least comparable if not superior – as well in terms of number of species as of distinctive supraspecific groupings – to that of all the remaining parts of the distribution area together. Unfortunately Cyphogastra DEYR. – partly despite but partly just because of containing large and usually colourful, attractive beetles – is a taxonomically difficult and at the same time over- (multitude of scattered accidental records and superficial descriptions) and under- (last comprehensive review – KERREMANS 1910 – more than a century old; almost no significant studies after 1950) studied genus, the knowledge of New Guinean fauna being especially chaotic and irreliable: many taxa remain undescribed and the published taxonomic relations among those already named have usually no much more relation to the reality than if based on crystal-gazing [so e.g. the most recent catalogue – BELLAMY 2008 – lists 16 (10 of them New Guinean) synonyms and 4 (not inhabiting New Guinea) subspecies of C. -

This report covers the feral animal removal activities, faunal and vegetation surveys conducted by CNMI-Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW), the Northern Island Mayor's Office (NIMO), and USFWS from April 2002 - April 2003. Wildlife surveys to assess species diversity and abundance were conducted from 25 April - 2 May 2002 for birds, skinks, geckos, lizards, rodents, bats, invertebrates, goats, and pigs on the eastern side of Anatahan. -

BOURQUIN, CONSULTANT COLLECTIONS MANAGER : CNMI INVERTEBRATE COLLECTION CREES - NORTHERN MARIANAS COLLEGE, SAIPAN DECEMBER 2002 1 CONTENTS Page Introduction 3 Procedures 3 Problems and recommendations 5 Acknowledgements 11 Appendix 1 Policy and protocol for Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas (CNMI) invertebrate collection 12 Appendix 2 Taxa to be included in the CNMI collection 15 Appendix 3 Biodiversity of CNMI and its representation in CNMI collection 19 References 459 2 INTRODUCTION This report is based on work done under contract from March 1st 2001 to December 1st, 2002 on the CNMI Invertebrate collection, Northern Marianas College, Saipan. The collection was started by Dr. L.H. Hale during 1970, and was resurrected and expanded from 1979 due to the foresight and energy of Dr “Jack” Tenorio, who also contributed a great number of specimens. Originally the collection was intended as an insect collection to assist identification of insects affecting agriculture, horticulture and silviculture in the Northern Marianas, and to contribute to the ability of pupils and students to learn more about the subject. During 2001 the collection was expanded to include all terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates, and a collection management protocol was established (see Appendices 1 and 2). The collection was originally owned by the CNMI Department of Land and Natural Resources , and was on loan to the NMC Entomology Unit for curation. During 2001 it was transferred to the NMC by agreement with Dr. “Jack” Tenorio, who emphasized the need to maintain separate teaChing material as well as identified specimens in the main collection.
