Im Laufe der Zeit wurde die Insel von Nomaden, Franken, Venezianern und Türken erobert. Die Vereinigung mit Griechenland und den restlichen Eptanisa- Inseln erfolge am 21. Mai 1864. Der Widerstand der Bewohner gegen die Italiener und die Deutschen während des zweiten Weltkrieges war sehr groß.
