Draft: Golden Threads Copyright © Rossen, 2011 Tuesday, March 5, 2013 Golden Threads Preamble My Family in Greece John Augustus Toole Who can tell which Angel of Good Fortune must have smiled upon the young loyalist Irishman, John Augustus Toole, when he joined the British Navy as a midshipman and sailed out to the Mediterranean sometime in the first decade of the 19th Century? He was landed on the enchanted island of Zante where he met the great love of his life, the Contessina Barbara Querini. In this book I will tell the story of their love, the disapproval of Barbara’s family and how it came about that the young British officer prevailed. It was his good fortune and hers that resulted in my family on the Ionian Islands in Greece. My life, four generations later, was succoured in the cradle of luxury and privilege that he, his children and grandchildren had created. Before I tell you the story of my remarkable life on these islands, a story resonant with living memory and fondness for the people who touched my life, I will describe in this preamble the times, places and people who came before me: the tales told to me as a child. Most of Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time of John Augustus Toole’s arrival. The seven Ionian Islands, located on the west coast of Greece, had escaped Ottoman occupation as part of the Venetian Empire. In 1796 Venice fell to the French under Napoléon Bonaparte. In 1809, British forces liberated the island of Zante and soon after Cephalonia, Kythria and Lefkada.

  • Onshore Drilling Outcomes in Kefalonia Issued 16 September 2015
Onshore Drilling Outcomes in Kefalonia Issued 16 September 2015 Summary The results of the geoscientific campaign unveiled a complex geo-tectonic and geological landscape beneath the Thinia valley, the isthmus separating the western peninsula of Paliki from the rest of Kefalonia. It has superseded the simple side-wall collapse and in-fill hypothesis and has raised another possibility, that of a massive rotational slump, leading to a toe-thrust and the elevation of an ancient marine channel. The critical question then becomes one of timing: could this rotational slump have occurred recently (in the last ~3,200 years) and therefore be responsible for in-filling and displacement of a Mycenaean age marine channel? Other promising findings include the discovery of ancient beach deposits buried under land-slip infill at the northern end of the Thinia valley and evidence of an ancient marine harbour that reached the foot of Kastelli Hill and that contained radiocarbon-datable samples attributable to the Bronze Age. An anomalous late-period lakebed, now dried out, is another intriguing finding. It is also worth reiterating that Mycenaean-era sites have been previously identified on both the western peninsula (called Paliki) and the remaining part of the island of Kefalonia, confirming that this land is of considerable historical and archaeological interest dating to the period in question. The geological research sponsored by Fugro and directed by Professor John Underhill has been completed safely, successfully and with no harm to the environment. Thinia valley panorama looking east from Paliki Project Background The objective of this phase of geoscientific research has been to test the proposition that the island of Ithaca may have been accurately described in Homer’s Odyssey as the furthest west of a group of four islands off the western coast of Greece, facing dusk, the open sea and being of low elevation.

  • ANASTASIOS GEORGOTAS “Archaeological Tourism in Greece
UNIVERSITY OF THE PELOPONNESE ANASTASIOS GEORGOTAS (R.N. 1012201502004) DIPLOMA THESIS: “Archaeological tourism in Greece: an analysis of quantitative data, determining factors and prospects” SUPERVISING COMMITTEE: - Assoc. Prof. Nikos Zacharias - Dr. Aphrodite Kamara EXAMINATION COMMITTEE: - Assoc. Prof. Nikolaos Zacharias - Dr. Aphrodite Kamara - Dr. Nikolaos Platis ΚΑΛΑΜΑΤΑ, MARCH 2017 Abstract . For many decades now, Greece has invested a lot in tourism which can undoubtedly be considered the country’s most valuable asset and “heavy industry”. The country is gifted with a rich and diverse history, represented by a variety of cultural heritage sites which create an ideal setting for this particular type of tourism. Moreover, the variations in Greece’s landscape, cultural tradition and agricultural activity favor the development and promotion of most types of alternative types of tourism, such as agro-tourism, religious, sports and medicinal tourism. However, according to quantitative data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority, despite the large number of visitors recorded in state-run cultural heritage sites every year, the distribution pattern of visitors presents large variations per prefecture. A careful examination of this data shows that tourist flows tend to concentrate in certain prefectures, while others enjoy little to no visitor preference. The main factors behind this phenomenon include the number and importance of cultural heritage sites and the state of local and national infrastructure, which determines the accessibility of sites. An effective analysis of these deficiencies is vital in order to determine solutions in order to encourage the flow of visitors to the more “neglected” areas. The present thesis attempts an in-depth analysis of cultural tourism in Greece and the factors affecting it.
