رﺳﺘﻨﻴﻬﺎ Rostaniha 14(1): 22-35 (2013) (1392 22) 35- :( 14)1 Generic endemism in South-West Asia: an overview Received: 26.02.2013 / Accepted: 09.03.2013 F. Sales : Associate Prof., Department of Life Sciences, Calçada Martim de Freitas, University of Coimbra, 3001-456 Coimbra, Portugal ([email protected]) I.C. Hedge: Honorary Associate, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, EH3 5LR, Scotland, U.K. ([email protected]) Abstract A provisional list of all the endemic vascular plant genera in SW Asia is presented. The area, here defined to include Turkey, the Caucasus, N Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and adjacent parts of Pakistan and Central Asia, has 161 genera restricted to it. By far, the greatest numbers of the endemic genera are in Apiaceae , Brassicaceae and Asteraceae ; many are morphologically isolated and occur at random throughout the area. Non-endemic genera with relevant distributions in the area are also discussed, several having a major concentration in Central Asia/Afghanistan and radiate westwards from there reaching a limit in SE Turkey/N Iraq. Also in these and other non-endemic genera, there are many species confined to the west (Turkey) or the east (Afghanistan) but very few are distributed throughout. The paper attempts to provide a framework for future research. It draws attention to the need for a more precise terminology in discussing phytochoria and questions the validity of many currently widely used terms including Irano-Turanian. Keywords: Central Asia, endemism, Irano-Turanian, phytogeography Introduction “L’Orient” of Boissier covered: (1) Greece and its islands and European Turkey; (2) Crimea, Transcaucasus and Caucasus; (3) Egypt to the first cataracts and the Arabian Peninsula till the line of the tropics; (4) Asia Minor, Armenia, Syria and Mesopotamia; (5) Persia, Afghanistan and Baluchistan and (6) S Turkestan to the line cutting the Aral Sea in two.

  • First Horseback Azerbaidjan Expedition 2018 Indiv
Pioneering Azerbaïdjan Horse Expedition CAUCASUS EXPEDITIONS Contact : Audrey Bogini [email protected] [email protected] CAUCASUS EXPEDITIONS 2018 Azerbaidjan shares its border with Georgia, Dagestan, Iran and Armenia. It stretches from the North with the Great Caucasus Mountains to the hilly picturesque Hirkan Natio- nal Park and the Talysh mountains in the South. It is the only country of the whole Cauca- sus chain where you can cross the southern slopes to the northern slopes. In the Caucasus area, Azerbaidjan is nowadays the wildest country for nature activities. Focused on the oil business the decision makers were not thinking about developing sport / outdoors tourism. The core of our itinerary is the self sufficient horseback trek in the very wilderness of the Great Caucasus Mountains. During our route we ride over passes, on crest or high pla- teau, between mountains lakes, through untouched forest and wild rivers. We will be accompanied by the local Lezgian people who know by heart the incredible Ismaili Na- tional park. Your target is to reach the village of Lahic settled by the Tat people coming originally from Iran. Mountains horses are the only way of transportation in the mountains, not only for people but also for different kind of material, wood, stones … . We will choose our route day by day in accordance with the weather, pathway and snow conditions. Each day will CAUCASUS EXPEDITIONS 2018 be an adventure and each trip will offer a new itinerary…be different and the choice is simply huge. Around our Caucasian cavalcades this trip offers a rich mix of nature and culture, dif- ferent kind of ecosystems and landscapes from the green mountains to the volcanic de- sert, old and new contrasting the country’s ancient heritage with its modern buildings in Baku, the pure unspoiled nature facing the former oil industrial lands.

Based on a study of more than 31,000 Staphylinidae recently collected in various habitats and using differ- ent methods, and on a critical evaluation of previous literature records, a checklist of the faunas of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh is compiled. The fauna of Armenia currently includes 675, that of Nagorno-Karabakh 198 named species. Nevertheless, it is concluded that the species inventory of both regions, especially that of Nagorno-Karabakh, is still far from complete. As many as 262 and 183 species are reported from Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, respec- tively, for the first time. A list of 99 species erroneously or doubtfully recorded from the study region is provided. A comparison with the species number and systematic composition of the faunas of other Caucasian countries and regions revealed that (a) their known diversities are significantly lower than should be expected and (b) a remark- ably high proportion (nearly 40 %) of Aleocharinae in the faunas of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, with the genus Atheta T"#&'#*, 1858 alone accounting for approximately 10 % of the total diversity in Armenia.

  • Evolutionary Consequences of Dioecy in Angiosperms: the Effects of Breeding System on Speciation and Extinction Rates
EVOLUTIONARY CONSEQUENCES OF DIOECY IN ANGIOSPERMS: THE EFFECTS OF BREEDING SYSTEM ON SPECIATION AND EXTINCTION RATES by JANA C. HEILBUTH B.Sc, Simon Fraser University, 1996 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Department of Zoology) We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA July 2001 © Jana Heilbuth, 2001 Wednesday, April 25, 2001 UBC Special Collections - Thesis Authorisation Form Page: 1 In presenting this thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for an advanced degree at the University of British Columbia, I agree that the Library shall make it freely available for reference and study. It is understood that copying or publication of this thesis for financial gain shall not be allowed without my written permission. The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada http://www.library.ubc.ca/spcoll/thesauth.html ABSTRACT Dioecy, the breeding system with male and female function on separate individuals, may affect the ability of a lineage to avoid extinction or speciate. Dioecy is a rare breeding system among the angiosperms (approximately 6% of all flowering plants) while hermaphroditism (having male and female function present within each flower) is predominant. Dioecious angiosperms may be rare because the transitions to dioecy have been recent or because dioecious angiosperms experience decreased diversification rates (speciation minus extinction) compared to plants with other breeding systems.

Tayman Co-Supervisor’s Signature: -------------------------------- Date: ------------------- Professor Y. O. Boahen ii ABSTRACT The root bark of the plant Turraea heterophylla belonging to the family Meliaceae was investigated for its chemical constituents. Phytochemical screening of both the methanolic and methylene chloride extracts indicated the presence of tannins, saponnins, terpenes, steroids and about eight different limonoids. Exhaustive extraction, chromatography and spectral analyses led to isolation of three compounds. The spectrometric analyses and the resulting data - including IR, NMR(H-H COSY and 1HNMR) and the LC - ESI - MS spectra and their interpretation helped to propose the structures of the three compounds.
