BOT.2(2), 7984 Introduction The author in a expedition to the pro- vince Khorasan, Iran in late spring 1978 for collecting plant specimens and cyto- logical material came across to a plant species which later identified as Sclero- rhachis rechingeri Iranshahr. This species in fact described and published by M. Iranshahr (1979) after my collection.The exact location where plant material for the cytogenetic and chromosome study of this species was collected is: Province Khorasan, 10 km S. of Robat-e Sefid (Sarcheshmeh Telecommunication Sta- tion), between Mashhad and Torbat-e Heydarieh. Three other species of this genus have so far been known, these includes: S. polysphaera Rech.f. which is endemic to central Afghanistan, S. caulescens (Ai- tch.& Hems.) Much of this material may be credited to the agricultural exploring expeditions that were in the field, all of which were engaged in special projects for the Department. Of the nearly 2,000 lots of seeds collected by Messrs. Westover and Bnlow, a large proportion are from regions in Turkistan and Turkey where the low winter temperatures and scanty rainfall make it appear probable that plants growing under those conditions would be able to withstand the similar climatic conditions in many parts of our Western and Southwestern States. The' plant material collected, which consists largely of grasses, leguminous plants, and local strains of vegetables, will also be useful, in large part, for the replanting of areas denuded by erosion. Similar comments may be made on the results of the Asiatic expedition con- ducted by H. G. MacMillan and J. L. Stephens, as the result of which about 60 lots of seeds and plants of grasses and other forage plants were introduced. Through the courtesy of the Botanical Institute at Ashkhabad, Turkmenistan, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the Bureau received 83 lots of seeds, mostly grasses and leguminous perennials and shrubs, and including several species never before introduced (Nos. -

This issue of IRG is our 60th – quite a milestone for what was begun as a one year experimental project. Production of the magazine does keep the IRG Team busy but of course, none of this would be possible without the generous input of our authors and photographers: To all of you - a special greeting of warm appreciation from Margaret, ZZ, Ian, Glassford and Richard. “Don’t tell me - more last minute editorial changes” from Theresa McCracken in Oregon So far, winter in the Northern Hemisphere has been veering between cold and mild to a degree that will confuse most of our plants, while in the South a drought is expected which will lead to problems for growers there. These are, I suppose, problems which are visited upon us most years, in some way or another. Perhaps this struggle against nature’s vagaries is part of what drives us in our challenge to “conquer” the difficulties and the puzzles our gardens present to us? Or perhaps we are just all happily obsessed? This is also the case for Shirkuh Mts. in central Iran. Here, Yazdana shirkuhensis gen. & spec. nov. (Caryophylleae, Caryophyllaceae) is described and illustrated from the high alpine zone of this mountain. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of nuclear and plastid DNA sequence data show that Y. shirkuhensis is related to Cyathophylla and Heterochroa (tribe Caryophylleae). -

Particular attention is paid to the pollen morphology of basal families of this group and to that of problematic taxa that are considered as sister groups to the group under study. Ultrastructurally similar sporoderms of several families, including (1) Asteraceae, Calyceraceae, and Goodeniaceae; (2) Campanulaceae, Phellinaceae, and Menyanthaceae; (3) Rousseaceae, Abrophyllaceae, and Columelliaceae, are described. Pollen grains of Alseuosmiaceae and Stylidiaceae show unique ultrastructural features of the exine.
