INSECTS OF SAMOA AND OTHER SAMOAN TERRESTRIAL ARTHROPODA Although a monograph, or series of papers, dealing comprehensively with the land arthropod fauna of any group of islands in the South Pacific may be expected to yield valuable results, in connection with distribution, modification due to isolation, and other problems, no such work is at present in existence. In order in some measure to remedy this deficiency, and in view of benefits directly accruing to the National Collections, the Trustees of the British Museum have undertaken the publication of an account of the Insects and other Terrestrial Arthropoda collected in the Samoan Islands, in 1924-1925, by Messrs. P. A. Buxton and G. H. E. Hopkins, during the Expedition of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to the South Pacific. Advantage has been taken of the opportunity thus afforded, to make the studies as complete as possible by including in them all Samoan material of the groups concerned in both the British Museum (Natural History) and (by courtesy of the authorities of that institution) the Bishop Museum, Honolulu. It is not intended that contributors to the text shall be confined to the Museum Staff or to any one nation, but, so far as possible, the assistance of the leading authorities on all groups to be dealt with has been obtained. " The work will be divided into eight " Parts (see p. 3 of wrapper), which will be subdivided into " Fascicles." Each of the latter, which will appear as ready in any order, will consist of one or more contributions. On the completion of the work it is intended to issue a general survey, summarising the whole and drawing from it such conclusions as may be warranted. E. E. From the distributional standpoint, the Coleoptera of the groups here dealt fall : with seem to into three categories (a) peculiar to the Samoan Group ; (6) of wider distribution in the Pacific, in some cases apparently limited to neighbouring groups of islands, in others extending throughout the tropics of the old world (c) cosmopolitan, in most cases store-pests ; and undoubtedly introduced by commerce ; this latter category is of course of no value in considering zoogeographical distribution. Out of about sixty species discussed in the present paper, twenty-two belong to the first category, while five genera, Apteromerus, n., Callistroma Fairm., Scolytocis, n., Melaneros Fairm. and Samoaneros, n., are also peculiar to Samoa. A further ten species, together with the genus Menandris Haag, are known in addition only from the adjacent groups of Wallis Is., Fiji, Tonga, and the Ellice Is. Of these autochthonous genera, Apteromerus is no doubt an offshoot from Bradymerus Perr., a genus mainly Indo-Malayan and Melanesian in distribution, and Callistroma from Paracupta Deyr., largely developed in Melanesia. For Scolytocis it is difficult to assign any particular origin ; Melaneros and probably Samoaneros are offshoots from the large and somewhat indeterminate genus Plateros, and probably also of Indo-Malayan origin. A consideration of the distribution of some of the more extensive but not too generally distributed genera, Bradymerus, Menimus, Uloma, Thesilea, IV. 2 67 1 68 INSECTS OF SAMOA. Chariotheca, Amarygmus among the Tenebrionidae, Pelecotomoides in the Rhipi- phoridae, Callirhipis, etc., appears to support the inference that the fauna of our region is a development of a branch originating in the Indo-Malay region and running eastward through Melanesia to Polynesia. So far as it is possible to judge from the limited fauna here considered, there seems little evidence of any important contribution having been received from Australia, no genera peculiar to that fauna, or their derivatives, being represented ; such features as they have in common, e.g. Carphurus, would appear to be due to a common origin in the Papuan region, rather than to an independent origin in Australia. Collections of greater or less extent from the Samoan Group have been received at the British Museum from the Rev. S. J. Whitmee, 1875, 1876, 1890, and 1897 ; Dr. H. Swale, 1917, 1918, 1920 ; Dr. F. W. O'Connor, 1920 ; while for the purposes of this present work further collections have been kindly lent by the authorities of the Bishop Museum, Honolulu (Coll. Swezey and Wilder, E. H. Bryan, Jr., A. F. Judd), and by Mr. F. Muir of Honolulu (Coll. H. C. Kellers). For bibliography, the reader is referred to the respective parts of Junk's Coleopterorum Catalogus where published, only the original citation, with a reference to a figure, and to papers subsequent to Junk's work being given in the present paper. The types of new species, except when otherwise stated, are in the British Museum. The following table shows the distribution, so far as it is known, of the Samoan fauna among the Samoan Is., and in other parts of the Pacific. Gebien in " Resultats de l'Expedition Scientifique Neerlandaise a la Nouvelle-Gruinee," Vol. xiii., Zoologie. Livr. 3, 1920 (subsequently referred to as Tenebr. N. Guin.). In this work a full synonymy is given, in addition to HETEROMERA, MALACODERMATA, ETC. 71 a complete account of the distribution of each species as known to the author ; many records from Samoa are included.

Keanekaragaman kumbang ini masih belum banyak diketahui dan dipelajari di Indonesia, terutama di Provinsi Riau. Sedangkan provinsi ini memiliki heterogenitas vegetasi yang tinggi yang merupakan habitat dan sumber makanan bagi kumbang antena panjang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginventarisasi dan mengkarakterisasi kumbang longhorn di hutan Talang Pematang Pudu Provinsi Riau. Metode yang digunakan adalah menggunakan perangkap Arthrocarpus. Kumbang dikumpulkan pada pukul 15.00 wib. Kemudian dilakukan pengawetan dan identifikasi karakter morfologi berdasarkan ciri kepala, dada dan perut. Hasil penelitian didapatkan sebanyak 12 spesies kumbang longhorn, dengan genera yang terdiri dari Sybra, Pterolophia, dan Epepeotes dari Subfamili Lamiinae. Jumlah individu yang diperoleh sebanyak 110 kumbang. Ciri-ciri kumbang longhorn yang dapat membedakan jenis kumbang terdapat pada ciri-ciri antena, elytra, skutelum dan pronotum. Kata Kunci : Kumbang longhorn, Cerambycid, Riau ABSTRACT:The longhorn beetle known as the Cerambycid beetle, is a beetle that has a very important role in the decomposition process which is useful for the balance of the forest ecosystem. The diversity of these beetles is still not widely known and studied in Indonesia, expectially in Riau Province. Meanwhile, the province has high vegetation heterogeneity which is a habitat and source of food for long antennae beetles.

    A faunal survey of the elateroidea of Montana by Catherine Elaine Seibert A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology Montana State University © Copyright by Catherine Elaine Seibert (1993) Abstract: The beetle family Elateridae is a large and taxonomically difficult group of insects that includes many economically important species of cultivated crops. Elaterid larvae, or wireworms, have a history of damaging small grains in Montana. Although chemical seed treatments have controlled wireworm damage since the early 1950's, it is- highly probable that their availability will become limited, if not completely unavailable, in the near future. In that event, information about Montana's elaterid fauna, particularity which species are present and where, will be necessary for renewed research efforts directed at wireworm management. A faunal survey of the superfamily Elateroidea, including the Elateridae and three closely related families, was undertaken to determine the species composition and distribution in Montana. Because elateroid larvae are difficult to collect and identify, the survey concentrated exclusively on adult beetles. This effort involved both the collection of Montana elateroids from the field and extensive borrowing of the same from museum sources. Results from the survey identified one artematopid, 152 elaterid, six throscid, and seven eucnemid species from Montana. County distributions for each species were mapped. In addition, dichotomous keys, and taxonomic and biological information, were compiled for various taxa. Species of potential economic importance were also noted, along with their host plants. Although the knowledge of the superfamily' has been improved significantly, it is not complete.

Abstract: Cards depicting Buprestidae species (Coleoptera) from Australia in the Shell Picture Card series entitled Australian Beetles (1965) are reviewed in this paper. The original cards are supplied as illustrations with the original accompanying data. Comments on these data are provided wherever applicable. Introduction During the early to mid 1960’s the Shell Petroleum Company issued a number of Picture Card series dealing with the fauna and flora of Australia. The cards were handed out free at Shell service stations across the country (when petrol stations did give proper service!) and were housed in an album which was purchased separately. This paper reviews the Buprestidae (Coleoptera) of the Australian Beetles series (card numbers 301-360)(1965). The other beetle groups will be dealt with in other papers. The reason for these papers is to provide the illustrations and data for future workers since the Shell Picture Card series are rare and have seldom been referred to as a result. The nomenclature used here generally follows that of Bellamy (2003). Introduction and Background on Proposed Action This biological assessment (BA) has been prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to evaluate the potential effects on federally-listed threatened and endangered species and designated critical habitat from the movement of baled garbage and regulated (domestic) garbage (GRG) from the State of Hawaii for disposal at landfills in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. Specifically, garbage is defined as urban (commercial and residential) solid waste from municipalities in Hawaii, excluding incinerator ash and collections of agricultural waste and yard waste. Regulated (domestic) garbage refers to articles generated in Hawaii that are restricted from movement to the continental United States under various quarantine regulations established to prevent the spread of plant pests (including insects, disease, and weeds) into areas where the pests are not prevalent.

ARMY, HAWAII Kwajalein Atoll is located in the Ralik (Sunset or Western) Chain of the Marshall Islands in the West Central Pacific Ocean. It is 2100 nautical miles southwest of San Francisco. Lying less than 700 miles north of the Equator, Kwajalein is in the latitude of Panama and the southern Philippines; it is in the longitude of New Zealand, 2300 miles south, and the Kamchatka Peninsula, USSR, 2600 miles north. Kwajalein Atoll is of coral reef formation in the shape of a crescent loop enclosing a lagoon. Situated on the reef are approximately 100 small islands, with a total land area of only 5.6 square miles (3584 acres). The three largest islets, Kwajalein (1.2 square miles), Roi-Namur and Ebadon, at the extremities of the Atoll, account for nearly half the total land area. While the typical size of the remaining isles may be about 140 by 225 m, the smallest islands are no more than sand cays that merely break the water's surface at high tide. The lagoon enclosed by the reef is the world's largest lagoon, having a surface area of 902 square miles. The Atoll's longest dimension is 75 miles from Kwajalein to Ebadon, and its average width is about 15 miles. Kwajalein Islet at the Atoll's southern tip and Roi-Namur at its northern extremity are 50 miles apart. All islets are flat and few natural points exceed 15 feet above mean sea level; those which do are sand dunes.
