Writer and editor Sarah Josepha Hale had written the children’s poem, originally known as Mary’s Lamb in 1830 and she helped found the American Ladies Magazine, which she used a platform to promote women’s issues. Sarah was also the editor of Godey’s Lady Book for more than 40 years, turning the magazine into one of the most infl uential periodicals in the country at that time. While at Godey’s, she often wrote editorials and articles about the Thanksgiving holiday and lobbied state and federal offi cials to pass legislation creating a fi xed, national day of thanks on the last Thursday of November. By 1854, more than 30 states and U.S. territories had a Thanksgiving celebration on the books. The concept of a national Thanksgiving did not origi- nate with Sarah Hale. • Rites of Passage and Oral Storytelling in Romanian Epic and the New Testament
Oral Tradition, 17/2 (2002): 236-258 Rites of Passage and Oral Storytelling in Romanian Epic and the New Testament Margaret H. Beissinger The exploration of traditional narratives that circulated in the pre- modern age through the comparative study of contemporary genres has a rich precedent in the groundbreaking work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord. Starting in the 1930s, Parry and Lord sought to gain insight into the compositional style of the Homeric epics by observing and analyzing Yugoslav oral epic poets and their poetry. Their findings and conclusions were seminal. In 1960, Lord posited that traditional singers compose long sung poetry in isometric verses in performance through their reliance on groups of words that are regularly used-—as parts of lines, entire lines, and groups of lines—to represent ideas in the poetry.1 This became known as the theory of oral-formulaic composition and has had profound implications in the study of epic and other traditional genres from ancient to modern times.2 Oral epic is no longer performed in today’s former Yugoslavia. But there are still traces of traditional narrative poetry elsewhere in the Balkans, namely in southern Romania, where I have done much fieldwork among epic singers and at epic performances. Though greatly inspired by the work of Parry and Lord, my goals in this article, of course, are far humbler. I examine narrative patterns in a Romanian epic song cycle in order to offer possible models for the further study of oral storytelling in the New Testament. My exploration centers on epics of initiation and the nature of the initiatory hero.

Petrovié Njegoš 1813— 1851 I Leben и n d p о 1 i t i s с h e s Wirken Njegoš stammte aus dem montenegrinischen Dorfe Njeguži unterhalb des Lovcen, aus der Familie Petrovié, in der sich seit dem Ende des 17.

Aside from adapting nov- els (for example, of Slobodan Selenić, Milorad Pavić, Al- eksandar Tišma, etc.) or Greek tragedies, poems, myths, DRAMATISATIONS there are adaptations of epic folk poetry specific to Ser- bia and the Balkans. Simović’s Hasanaginica or Banović Strahinja adapted by Borislav Mihailović-Mihiz based on the motifs of these two poems, are performed with great frequency. A great example of adapting poetry for stage Translated by > Stefan Alidini is Jernej Lorenci’s Kingdom of Heaven. He and his team staged poems from the pre-Kosovo and Kosovo cycles at BITEF and the National theatre. These are only some of the numerous examples where great works of literature – regardless of whether they were written as plays, for they can also be a part of the adaptation process – novels or folk poetry, were trans- formed into a new version and a first-rate dramatic text. One of many things to note is that working based on existing literature (mainly prose) falls into a separate category of dramatic works that are considered “origi- nal” creations.

Using reports from the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, military histories of Yugoslavia’s Second World War, and case files from the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), this thesis shows how the hajduk epics were used to articulate war programs and formations, to construct perpetrator and victim identities, and to help encourage and justify the levels of violence during the Yugoslav wars of succession, 1991-1995. The thesis shows how the formalising of the invented hajduk tradition made the epics an important part of political and military mobilisation for at least the last two centuries.

Jurić; McMaster University – Anthropology ABSTRACT This thesis presents a critical overview of a supernatural being, the South Slavic vila, as she figures in the oral traditions of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian peasants collected in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The thesis returns to the conceptual frame of older primary texts (here titled survey studies) used by comparative scholars and updates this work with the knowledge gleaned from a century of research and theory in the fields of folkloristics and historical anthropology. These materials are presented in a distributive frequency analysis model such as those often employed by the Historical-Geographic school of folklore research, but the study is built on a foundation informed by the insights of Milman Parry and Albert Lord’s researches into the diffusion of oral traditions. These traditions are further refined by focusing on the singers, storytellers and believers who used the vila in an emic manner balanced at a nexus point between artistic innovation and traditional dictates.
