Bare-crowned Antbird Tour Intro Colombia has become iconic among Neotropical bird enthusiasts…that is to say, anybody who has ever seen a Cock-of-the-rock, Manakin lek, or hummingbird feeding station in the Andes! It is impossible to avoid falling in love with this diverse, impressive, stunning part of the world – and Colombia has the best of it. Guianan shield, Amazon Basin, three Andean ranges, tropical valleys, coastlines, and the famed Santa Marta Mountains are only what is NOW recognized as accessible. As time passes, access increases, and Colombia (rather than becoming more mundane) just becomes more mysterious as new species reveal themselves and new habitats become known, and we look to ever more remote parts of this complex nation. The mystery and wonder of Colombia, perhaps more than any other country, begged a challenge: is it possible for a commercial tour to record more than 1000 species of birds in less than a month? If so, Colombia was obviously the place to do it! The following is a much abbreviated account of one of the most spectacular journeys this author has ever embarked upon, and cannot possibly do justice to the marvelous sights, sounds, smells, and tastes one encounters after spending a whole month in Birder’s Paradise – Colombia! We were very impressed but it turns out the best views are from the Brazil side. Here are some passages taken from the Journal I write every night for my VENT tours, which I then edit and mail to the participants after I return home. Iguaçu Falls must be experienced in person…there is just no other way to appreciate the spectacle. There are actually 275 narrow to wide individual falls. There is a great view from the entrance to the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas but as one walks down the ¼-mile river trail more and more falls are visible along the way. At the far end, one can walk out a boardwalk to a platform that allows an upriver view up into La Garganta del Diablo or Devil’s Throat. 457 ARTICLE Patterns of genome size diversity in bats (order Chiroptera)1 Jillian D.L. Smith, John W. Bickham, and T. Ryan Gregory Abstract: Despite being a group of particular interest in considering relationships between genome size and metabolic param- eters, bats have not been well studied from this perspective. This study presents new estimates for 121 “microbat” species from 12 families and complements a previous study on members of the family Pteropodidae (“megabats”). The results confirm that diversity in genome size in bats is very limited even compared with other mammals, varying approximately 2-fold from 1.63 pg in Lophostoma carrikeri to 3.17 pg in Rhinopoma hardwickii and averaging only 2.35 pg ± 0.02 SE (versus 3.5 pg overall for mammals). However, contrary to some other vertebrate groups, and perhaps owing to the narrow range observed, genome size correlations were not apparent with any chromosomal, physiological, flight-related, developmental, or ecological characteristics within the order Chiroptera. Genome size is positively correlated with measures of body size in bats, though the strength of the relation- ships differs between pteropodids (“megabats”) and nonpteropodids (“microbats”). Résumé : Bien qu’elles constituent un groupe présentant un intérêt particulier pour l’étude des relations entre la taille du génome et les paramètres métaboliques, les chauves-souris n’ont pas été bien étudiées sous cet angle. Dans ce travail, les auteurs présentent des estimés pour 121 espèces de “microchiroptères” appartenant a` 12 familles et ceci vient compléter une étude antérieure sur des membres de la famille des Pteropodidae (“mégachiroptères”). -

Guyana - A Timeless Paradise Naturetrek Tour Report 3rd – 17th February 2020 Kaieteur Falls Hoatzin Guianan Cock-of-the-rock Giant Anteater Report by Wally Prince Images courtesy of Wally Prince Naturetrek Mingledown Barn Wolf's Lane Chawton Alton Hampshire GU34 3HJ UK T: +44 (0)1962 733051 E: [email protected] W: www.naturetrek.co.uk Tour Report Guyana – A Timeless Paradise Tour participants: Wally Prince (leader) with three Naturetrek clients Summary The tour into the heart of biodiversity-rich Guyana began with a visit to the mighty Kaieteur Falls on a chartered flight bestowed with perfectly clear skies, allowing the group to clearly view and appreciate the vast greenery of almost unbroken forest landscapes for 100s of miles – a ‘sea of broccoli’. We enjoyed spectacular views of Kaieteur Falls both from the air and exploring on foot. The tour continued with great success as we worked our way south through pristine, untouched rainforest before reaching the more open savanna. Each day held wonderful wildlife moments and we met some amazing people along the way. This small group returned home with many incredible wildlife memories made. Iconic mammal sightings on the tour included a spectacular young Jaguar crossing a trail, groups of Giant River Otter and two separate Giant Anteater sightings with six species of primate encountered. Guianan Cock-of-the- rock, Hoatzin, Spangled and Pompadour Cotinga, Great Horned Owl, Scarlet Ibis and Blood-colored Woodpecker were just a few of the iconic birds we all enjoyed. A total of 237 bird species were seen, 17 mammals and a great range of reptiles and amphibians with highlights including two species of Crocodilian, Golden Rocket Frog – a stunning species endemic to Kaieteur Falls, and Amazon Pigmy Gecko.
