Flash Notes Upcoming Jakarta Governor Election Ho Woei Chen [email protected] Global Economics & Markets Research Email: [email protected] URL: www.uob.com.sg/research Monday, 13 February 2017 Flash Notes Upcoming Jakarta Governor Election Local elections will be held next Wed (Feb 15) in 101 regions across Indonesia. The most closely-watched is clearly the Jakarta election where 7.2 million registered voters will elect their governor to a five-year term in a three-corner fight. The Jakarta governor job is seen as a stepping stone to higher office since Jokowi was Jakarta governor prior to becoming the president in Nov 2014. Incumbent Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) along with his deputy Djarot Saiful Hidayat will be running for a second term, against Agus Harimurtri Yudhoyono, the son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and Anies Baswedan, former Minister of Education and Culture (2014-2016). Basuki who is under trial for blasphemy has seen his popularity rating bouncing back after the first official gubernatorial debate on Jan 13. The second debate was held on Jan 27 and the final one will be held today (Feb 10). Indonesia enters into the official cooling-off period on Feb 12-14. The verdict on Basuki’s blasphemy trial is expected to be out only after the Jakarta election, probably in March. Various media reports suggest that conviction for blasphemy is highly likely. Conviction comes with jail term of up to five years. In the event of a conviction, his hold to the office will be precarious even if he wins the election on Feb 15. The outcome depends on the sentencing recommendation as office-holders in Indonesia will be suspended if they face charges with a jail sentence of five years or more. In such an event, Mr Djarot Saiful Hidayat, his deputy and running mate will take over. Official results are expected to be announced a week after the election but unofficial quick count results which have been proven to be accurate will be out shortly after the poll closes at 2pm SG time on Feb 15. Inauguration will be in Oct 2017. The government has announced 15 Feb as a public holiday in Indonesia and markets will be closed. • Beberapa Tahun Belakangan, Konstelasi Politik DKI Jakarta Memanas. Tahun 2007 Merupakan Tahun Dimulainya Pemilihan Gubernur
Without a doubt, Jakarta has increasingly become the major core of the agglomeration processes transforming it and its satellite cities into a Mega Urban Region (MUR). This paper traces historically the interactions between migration, ethnicities and local politics in Jakarta from the 1960s to the 2000s focusing on the latest development, in which the phenomenon ‘Ahok’, the nickname of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Chinese-Christian from the small district of Belitung, has become an increasingly popular Governor of Jakarta. The paper argues that through the recent developments in Jakarta the politics have apparently been transformed into more civic, rather than ethnic politics. The nature of Jakarta as a proliferating migrant city transcends narrow cultural identities as well as conventional party politics into a more active citizenry through the widespread use of social media. Keywords: migration, ethnicity, local politics, new media Introduction had already started in the 17th century. • The Two-Face of Anies Baswedan: the Inconsistency with Regards to Jakarta Reclamation
Journal of Language and Literature ISSN: 1410-5691 (print); 2580-5878 (online) Jean Antunes Rudolf Zico Ma’u The Two-Face of Anies Baswedan: The Inconsistency with Regards to Jakarta Reclamation Jean Antunes Rudolf Zico Ma’u [email protected] Graduate Program in English Language Studies, Universitas Sanata Dharma, INDONESIA Abstract Homo homini lupus and the end justifies the means are two general adagios that have been applied in the political contestation. The main idea behind the two adagios is that one should benefit any means necessary at all cost in order to execute the vested political agenda. Such practice is almost found in any domain of political practice, especially in the general election for governor. One of the good examples that describes the case best is the governor election of DKI-1. During this election, one of the candidates, namely Anies Baswedan, has successfully manipulated the environmental issues, namely Jakarta Reclamation, into one of his political weapons by promising that he shall cease Jakarta Reclamation if he has been officially elected as the Governor of Jakarta Special Capitol. Indeed, he has won the election and thus he has kept his commitment by sealing the 932 buildings from Island D. However, several moments later he issued the building permit for a number of buildings in one of the reclamation islands and ever since then people, especially his supporters, have started questioning his commitment toward the cessation of Jakarta Reclamation. Departing from the case, the researcher is encouraged to conduct a study that might disclose the true characteristics of a political figure.

As this research shows, the interviewed buzzers were one of the driving forces behind the massive success of the fundamentalist Islamic Defenders Front (Front Pembela Islam, FPI) as they mobilized people to participate in the organization’s political rallies between 2016 and 2017. Driven by altruistic volunteerism and sense of community, these actors go beyond their duty as click-farmers.
