Avoid watching television, reading, discussions, etc while eating. Focus on your food and enjoy it. Masticate (chew) well until the taste of the food disappears and then swallow. Digestion should start at mouth !

Have plenty of vegetables and greens in your food. Have atleast three servings of fruits daily. Don't have fruits immediately after meal. Best time for fruits is one or two hours before any meal. Whole fruit is always better than its juice. Have ample water in a day. No harm in having it a bit excess. Don't drink water in the middle of eating. Have some water after 30 minutes of your meal. Avoid stimulants like coffee and tea as they suppress your real appetite. Don't go to bed right after dinner. Have an interval of atleast 2 hours between dinner and bed.

Origin of Yoga

Yoga originated from India. But in ancient days India didn't exist as one single country... people were different by their race, language, religion, Gods and political governance. It was split into smaller kingdoms which were ruled by several kings. Still the land south of Himalayas was considered as one entity and was called as Bharath Varsha.

In Japan, there lived a great mystic, Hotei, who was called as laughing Buddha. He was one of the most loved mystics in Japan, and he never uttered a single word. As he became enlightened, he started laughing, and whenever somebody would ask, Why are you laughing? he would laugh more. And he would move from village to village, laughing.

A crowd would gather and he would laugh. And slowly -- his laughter was very infectious -- somebody in the crowd would start laughing, then somebody else, and then the whole crowd was laughing -- laughing because.... Why were they laughing? Everybody knows, "It is ridiculous; this man is strange, but why are we laughing?"

But everybody was laughing; and everybody was a little worried, "What will people think? There is no reason to laugh." But people would wait for Hotei, because they had never laughed in their whole life with such totality, with such intensity that after the laughter they found their every sense had become more clear. Their eyes could see better, their whole being had become light, as if a great burden had disappeared.

People would ask Hotei, "Come back again," and he would move, laughing, to another village. His whole life, for near about forty-five years after his enlightenment, he did only one thing and that was laughing. That was his message, his gospel, his scripture.

In a few Zen monasteries, every monk has to start his morning with laughter, and has to end his night with laughter. It will be difficult, living in a family set-up, to suddenly laugh early in the morning. But do try it; it's worth getting out of bed laughing. Yes, for no reason at all. Isn't it good to be alive?

Osho, in his discourse on ' From Sex to Superconsciousness ' says,

"I have been amazed – I have come across prostitutes, but they never ask anything about sex. They inquire about the soul and about god. I also come across many ascetics, monks and holy men, and whenever we are alone they ask about nothing but sex. I have been amazed to learn that ascetics and your so-called sannyasins who are always preaching against sex, seem to be troubled and obsessed by sex in their minds. In public they sermonize about the soul and about god, but inside they have the same problem as others. It is bound to be so, it is only natural, because we have never tried to understand the problem.

We have never tried to know the fundamentals of this energy and we have never asked why there is such a great attraction to sex. There certainly lies some mystery in it and it is necessary to understand it. Perhaps then we can even go beyond it.

The first thing is that attraction for sex in the very being of humans is not actually an attraction for sex. The sexual desire in the very core of humans is actually not a sexual desire. That is why after every sex act, they feel remorseful, they feel unhappy, depressed. They think about how to be free of it, because they find nothing in it. Perhaps the attraction is of something else. And that attraction has a very religious significance to it.

The attraction is this.…In their normal life, humans are unable to reach the depths of their being except in the experience of sex. In their daily routine, they have a variety of experiences – the shop, the business, earning their living, earning fame – but only the experience of sexual intercourse takes them to the deepest in their being.

Deep down two things happen to them there.

First, in the moment of orgasm the ego vanishes. Egolessness emerges. For a moment, there is no ego; for a moment, no trace of even “I am.” Did you know that the “I” also dissolves completely in the ultimate experience of religion, that in religion the ego also dissolves into nothingness? In the sexual act the ego fades away momentarily, one forgets if one is or not, the feeling of “my-ness” disappears briefly.

The second thing that happens is that for a while there is no time there. Timelessness emerges. Jesus Christ has said of enlightenment, “There shall be time no longer.” In the experience of enlightenment, there is no time at all. It is beyond time. There is no past, no future; there is only the present. This is the second thing that happens in the experience of sex – there remains no past, no future; time also vanishes for a moment.

These two are the most important elements of religious experience: egolessness and timelessness. And these two elements are what account for humans’ mad pull toward sex. The craving is not for the body of a woman by a man or for the body of a man by a woman, not at all. The craving is for something else – for the taste of egolessness and timelessness. But why this craving for being timeless and egoless? Because no sooner than the ego disappears, there is a glimpse of the soul; no sooner than time disappears, there is a glimpse of god. This glimpse is only for a brief moment, but man is ready to lose any amount of energy for it.

Afterwards he laments the loss of his energy, for its wastage, because he knows that the more his energy dissipates the closer his death comes. In some species of animals, males die after one act of intercourse. A particular insect in Africa can go into sexual intercourse only once; its energy dissipates and it dies during the intercourse itself. It has become known to man long ago that intercourse dissipates his energy, lessens his life-energy and brings death that much nearer. After each experience he regrets his indulgence, but in a short while he feels the same craving again. Certainly there is some other meaning behind this craving which must be understood.

There is a religious experience, a spiritual experience involved behind the craving for sex. If we can become aware of that experience we can go beyond sex. If not, we will live in sex and die in sex.

Those who oppose sex blindly are never able to catch hold of that experience. They will never be able to analyze what this insatiable desire in us, this craving in us, is actually for.

I wish to emphasize that this strong and recurring pull toward sex is for experiencing the momentary state of samadhi, the no-mind, the superconsciousness it brings. And you can be free of sex only on the day when you start having the experience of samadhi, no-mind, without sex.

That is why I say that human beings had their first experience of samadhi, of the no- mind or superconsciousness, in the experience of sex. But that is an experience at a high cost, at a very high cost. Secondly, that experience does not last longer than a moment; after a momentary glimpse we return again to our original position. We fall back to our original position minus a considerable amount of power and energy."

Question: Can yoga help alleviate my diabetes?

Sadhguru: When it comes to a chronic ailment, whatever may be the ailment, the root cause for it is always in the energy body. Your energy body functions the way it functions for various reasons. It may be because of the kinds of atmospheres you live in, the kind of food that you eat, the kinds of relationships that you hold or because of your emotions, attitudes, thoughts and opinions. It may also be because of certain external energy situations that disturb your internal energy. In some way, your energy body is disturbed which will naturally manifest both physiologically and psychologically. Once this one layer of the body - the energy body - is disturbed, the mental body and the physical body are bound to be disturbed. Actually it becomes a doctor’s concern only after it becomes a medical problem. Till then it is not a doctor’s concern because there is no physiological manifestation.

Unfortunately, medical science understands only disease. It does not understand the roots of health, as to where it comes from and what the basis of health is. If you are a diabetic, sugar is not the problem with you. It is just that your pancreas is not functioning properly. As an emergency measure you reduce the sugar intake because in the Allopathic system of medicine, they have no other way to activate your pancreas, so this is the only measure they have taught you-“check your sugar every day and take a little more insulin”. The Allopathic system is symptomatic in treatment - the doctor looks at your symptoms and gives you the treatment.

Allopathic system is a fantastic system for any infections. Allopathy is the best thing as I see for anything that comes to your body from outside. But it does not offer any solution for the simple ailments which man is creating for himself from within, like diabetes, blood pressure, or migraine headaches. Modern medical science only offers to manage the diseases and never really talks about freeing you from those diseases. There are whole systems of medicine and so many kinds of specialists to manage diseases within certain limitations. A lot of money and time is being spent on just managing those diseases. It is just like people talking about stress management. People want to manage their stress, people want to manage their diabetes, people want to manage their blood pressure. It is ridiculous. This kind of foolishness has entered, simply because they have not understood the fundamentals of how their own life energies function.

In yoga, if there is diabetes, we see it as a very fundamental disturbance - diabetes is not taken lightly as a disease. We see that the fundamental structure of the basic body is being disturbed. That is why diabetes happens. And it is different in each individual. For each person, the level of disturbance and the type of disturbance that happens in each system is very different. So it needs to be handled individually. However, irrespective of what the disease is, yoga only aims at balancing and energizing or activating the energy body. The basic premise in yoga is that if your energy body is in full flow and properly balanced, there can be no chronic disease either in your physical body or your mental body. Diabetes will go because we are not treating the disease as such, we are seeing disease only as a manifestation of the disturbance that could be existing in the energy body.

So if people are willing to do a certain amount of sadhana to balance and activate their energy body, they can definitely be free of all chronic ailments. ------

Information In the earlier days of its conception, the system of Ayurveda was orally transferred Books & Articles through the Gurukul system until written scripts came into existence. The significant scripts on Ayurveda are Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya. In fact the two schools of thought led to the writing of two major books on Ayurveda - Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. These two Samhitas were written in the early part of 1000 BC. The great sage - physician Charaka authored Charaka Samhita revising and supplementing the text written by Athreya. And it has remained the most referred Ayurvedic text on internal medicine till date.

Sushruta, following the Dhanvanthari school of thought, wrote Sushruta Samhita, comprising the knowledge about prosthetic surgery to replace limbs, cosmetic surgery, caesarian operations and even brain surgery. He is famed for his innovation of cosmetic surgery on nose or Rhinoplasty.

Around 500 AD Vagbhata compiled the third major treatise on Ayurveda, Ashtanga Hridaya, which is a concise version of the works of Charaka and Sushruta. It contained the knowledge of both the schools of Ayurveda.

From 500 AD to 1900 AD, 16 major Nighantus or supplementary texts on Ayurveda were written incorporating new drugs, expansion in applications, discarding old drugs and identification of substitutes.

Meanwhile the texts on Ayurveda were translated into many languages and a growing number of people are practising this system of medicine throughout the world. There are few distinguished institutions which offer authentic Ayurvedic treatments. One among them is Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala in - India, founded by Vaidyaratnam Sri P. S. Varier.

Principles of Ayurveda

1) Each person is a Microcosm in the Macrocosm - the Universe.

2) Universe is made up of the combinations of five elements (Panchamahaabhutas) - Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether (Space). In the same fashion each person is unique and is made up of these five elements in different proportions.

3) Five elements are categorized into three biological forces or Doshas which govern all life processes.

4) The three Doshas are: Vaata, Pitta and Kapha

5) Each person is influenced by certain elements more than by other elements. This is because of their natural constitution.

If a person is influenced by Air and Ether elements then he/she is categorized as a person with Vaata Dosha. If a person is influenced by Fire element then he/she is categorized as a person with Pitta Dosha. If a person is influenced by Earth and Water elements then he/she is categorized as a person with Kapha Dosha.

6) Most people's constitution is made up of a combination of two Doshas. For instance, people who are 'Vaata Pitta' type will have the characteristics of both Vaata Dosha and Pitta Dosha, with Vaata dominating.

7) The three Doshas regulate all the physiological and psychological processes in a living organism. The interplay among these three forces determines the qualities and conditions of an individual. A harmonious state of the three Doshas creates balance and health. An imbalance, which might be an excess or deficiency, manifests as a symptom of disease.

8) To keep the Doshas in balance, the first step is, one has to find out which Dosha or combination of them is dominant in one's body. Preferably this would be determined by an experienced practitioner of Ayurveda. The diagnostic process also determines which Doshas are underactive or overactive in the body. According to that the Ayurveda practitioner chooses the right treatment procedure.

Treatment methods

Ayurveda offers mainly three kinds of treatments:

1) Panchakarma and special treatments 2) Ayurvedic medicines 3) Diet and lifestyle control

Panchakarma comprises of a number of Ayurvedic therapies involving detoxification, therapeutic cleansing of the body and rejuvenation as a treatment for many chronic conditions. Panchakarma includes Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana.

Some of the special treatments are Abhyanga, Sirodhara, Shirovasti, Pizhichil, Navarakkizhi, etc.

Ayurvedic medicines mainly comprise of powders, tablets, decoctions, medicated oils, etc, which are prepared from natural herbs, plants and minerals.

In Ayurveda, which evolved by the side of Yoga in the ancient India, a physician had to be a yogi also. Unless you are a Yogi you cannot be a real physician. You cannot be a real healer. The physician had to watch his own inner arrangement before he would go to the patient to see and treat him.

The word for medical science in the East is Ayurveda. Even the word will show you the difference. In the West you call it 'medicine'. Medicine means curing, healing, but can you see the implication? It does not mean health, it comes after the disease has already come in. It is a follow-up. First you are sick, then comes the doctor. The doctor follows sickness, with his bag of medicines. Osho

Ayurveda means the science of life. The very word has nothing to do with disease, sickness; it has something to do with life, health, longevity. It is positive, it is not negative. It shows you the way to remain healthy, to remain young as long as you want, to live longer if that's what you want. Its focus is not on sickness, its focus is on health.

Patanjali's Yoga system and Hindu system of medicine, Ayurveda, developed simultaneously, together. Ayurveda is totally different than Allopathy. Allopathy is suppressive of the disease. If you are ill, allopathy immediately suppresses the illness. Then the illness tries some other weak point to come up. Then from somewhere else it explodes. Then you suppress it from there, then from somewhere else it explodes. But with allopathy, you go on from one illness to another, from another to another, but it is a never-ending process.

Ayurveda has a totally different concept. Illness should not be suppressed: it should be released. A catharsis is needed. So Ayurvedic medicine is given to the ill person so that the illness comes up and is thrown out, a catharsis. So the beginning doses of Ayurvedic medicine may make you more ill, and it takes a long time because it is not a suppression. It cannot be done right now: it is a long process. The illness has to be thrown, and your inner energy has to become a harmony so the health comes from within. The medicine will throw the illness out, and the healing force will replace it from your own being.

Varmakkalai is a part of Thekkan Kalari. Varma is called as the point of secrets. There are 108 places in the body which are highly dangerous. Either a finger push or a gentle touch in these places can paralyze or even cause death to a person. These vulnerable places can be used to heal or harm.

Along with Sage Agasthya many other Siddhas contributed significantly to the Siddha medicine. They lived in forests, caves and mountains and ate mainly fruits and roots. According to tradition, there were 18 Siddhas (Highly accomplished ones / Perfected human beings):

1.Nandi Devar 2.Agasthya(or)Agasthyar 3.Thirumoolar

4.Bogar 5.Konganar 6.Machamuni

7.Thaeraiyar 8.Sattaimuni 9.Agappaei

10.Kaalanginaathar 11.Kudhambai 12.Karuvoorar

13.Idaikaadar 14.Kamalamuni 15.Punnaakkeesar

16.Pulasthiyar 17.Azhuganni 18.Paambaatti

But there were (and) are many other equally great Siddhas who cannot be contained in this small list.

Mahaaguru Bogar used nine different minerals (Nava Paashaanam) to create Lord Dhandapaani idol in Palani-Tamilnadu Abhishekam which touches this idol, if consumed, is capable of curing many ailments !



Principles of Siddha medicine

1) Principles of Siddha are similar to that of Ayurveda.

2) Universe is the macrocosm and human is a microcosm in it.

3) Everything in this Universe is made up of the combinations of five elements (Panchamahaabhutas) - Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether(Space).

4) The three Doshas, Vaata-Pitta-Kapha regulate all the physiological and psychological processes in a living organism. The interplay among these three forces determines the qualities and conditions of an individual. The equilibrium of the three Doshas is considered as health and the disturbance or imbalance leads to disease.

5) Diet and lifestyle play a major role, not only in health but also in curing diseases. This concept of the siddha medicine is termed as pathiyam and apathiyam, which is essentially a list of do's and dont's.

6) Proper food itself is the medicine.

Diagnosis

Amongst the varied traditional systems, the Siddha diagnostic methodology is quite unique and interesting that includes eight important diagnostic methods namely,

1. Naadi - pulse diagnosis 2. Sparisam - touch diagnosis 3. Naa - tongue examination 4. Varnam - colour of skin examination 5. Svaram - voice examination 6. Vizhi - eye examination 7. Malam - faeces examination 8. Moothiram - urine examination

Medicine and Treatment

In Siddha medicine the usage of metals and minerals is more predominant when compared to other traditional medicine systems.

The medicines prepared by the Siddhas can be classified into three groups:

1. Thaavaram (herbal products) 2. Thaadhu (inorganic substances) 3. Jangamam (animal products)

The Thaadhu medicines are further classified into:

1. Uppu (water-soluble inorganic substances that give out vapour when put into fire)

2. Paashaanam (drugs not dissolved in water but emit vapour under fire)

3. Uparasam (similar to paashaanam but differ in action)

4. (not dissolved in water but melt under fire - metals like gold, silver and lead)

5. Rasam (drugs which are soft)

6. Ghandhagam (drugs which are insoluble in water, like sulphur)

Siddha treatment is classified into three types: a) Deva maruthuvum (Divine method): Medicines like parpam, chendooram, guru, kuligai(made of mercury, sulphur) and paashaanam are used. b) Maanuda maruthuvum (Rational method): Medicines made of herbs like churanam, kudineer and vadagam are used. c) Asura maruthuvum (Surgical method): Incision, excision, heat application and blood-letting (leech therapy) are used.

According to Siddha medicine there are 108 vital points (Varma points) in human body through which Prana flows in a channeled way. Any trauma to these critical points may cause loss of consciousness or convulsions or even death. But gentle vibration or pressure applied in these points relieves the obstruction of the energy flow. This is known as Varma therapy which provides a complete natural healing and rejuvenation.

Yoga (Asanas & Pranayama) is also prescribed for faster healing and maintaining health thereafter.

It’s not just the number of hours in bed that is important—it’s the quality of those hours of sleep. If you’re giving yourself plenty of time for sleep, but you’re still having trouble waking up in the morning or staying alert all day, you may not be spending enough time in the different stages of sleep—especially deep sleep and REM sleep.

Your internal 24-hour sleep-wake cycle, otherwise known as biological clock or circadian rhythm, is regulated by processes in the brain that respond to how long you’ve been awake and the changes between light and dark.

At night, your body responds to the loss of daylight by producing melatonin, a hormone that makes you sleepy. During the day, sunlight triggers the brain to inhibit melatonin production so you feel awake and alert.

If you can't avoid working in shifts, then you may want to be careful on how to cope up with night shifts.

Yoga and sleep

Yoga promotes whole-body wellness - both physically and psychologically, without any imbalances. This creates perfect harmony between the mind, body and the universe around you. It has been claimed that on average, for every minute you do yoga you will need one minute less of sleep. Practicing yoga is an excellent time investment, not only for health benefits, but also for sleep. Yoga can affect the quality of your sleep. Certain yoga poses affect the nervous system and balance the hormones in your brain, which can normalize your sleep cycle. Practicing yoga postures improves blood circulation throughout the body, nourishing all your organs, tissues and nerves. Yoga also encourages you to tune in to the present moment, often by focusing on the breath, which allows you to stop worrying about things that happened in the past or might happen in the future. Yoga relieves stress and tension which is a common factor in sleep disorders.

Meditation and sleep

Meditation and sleep both give deep rest. Meditation improves the quality of your sleep - though it isn’t a substitute to sleep. Delta waves are the lowest of brainwave activity found during deep, dreamless sleep. They are also found in experienced meditators. Most types of meditation lower the brainwaves into the alpha-theta brainwave range. A very safe, healthy way to attempt to increase your delta brainwaves is to make the act of meditation a daily habit. You’ll naturally increase your flexibility to travel through the alpha brainwave range, possibly through the theta brainwave range, and into the depths of the delta brainwave range. If you meditate regularly (15 minutes, twice a day) you can notice a significant reduction in your sleep time.

And through Yoga, one can learn to use the lungs to their maximum capacity and to control the breath. Proper breathing should be deep, slow and rhythmical.

Breath and mind control You might have noticed that your breathing pattern varies according to your mental state. For example, when you are relaxed, calm and composed you have deep breathing at a slower rate. And when you are agitated your breathing is shallow and fast.

If you want to control your mind, say you want to become calm, then ordering your mind like "Hey mind relax, please relax..." won't work or it might be too difficult. Because mind is like a monkey ! It won't listen to you.

Rather if you control your breathing pattern (which you can do very much) you can change your mental state. Take few deep breaths at a slower rate...that's it...you are relaxed !

Breath is the best tool to take control over one's mind.

Simple breathing exercise for you

Deep breathing (or) Abdominal breathing (or) Diaphragmatic breathing (or) Belly breathing

1. Lie down on your back. 2. Keep your left hand closer to body with palm facing upward. 3. Place your right palm on upper abdomen, where the diaphragm is located. 4. Close your eyes. 5. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose. As you breathe in, let your abdomen expand so that it pushes the hand resting on it out. (Breathe only as deep as comfortable and don't overstrain yourself) 6. Exhale through your nose slowly and deeply enough to allow the abdomen to cave in and feel the hand resting on it coming back down. 7. Continue this way, have focus only on the right palm on the abdomen - going up & down gently, without any other thoughts, for five minutes and check your relaxation levels !

Vipassana Meditation

Vipassana meditation technique again came from Buddha !

Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was rediscovered by Gothama Buddha more than 2500 years ago and was taught by him as a universal remedy for universal ills.

This non-sectarian technique aims for the total eradication of mental impurities and the resultant highest happiness of full liberation. Healing, not merely the curing of diseases, but the essential healing of human suffering, is its purpose.

Since the time of Buddha, Vipassana has been handed down, to the present day, by an unbroken chain of teachers. Although Indian by descent, the teacher in this chain, Mr. S.N. Goenka (1924 - 2013), was born and raised in Burma (Myanmar). While living there he had the good fortune to learn Vipassana from his teacher, Sayagyi U Ba Khin who was at that time a high ranking government official.

Osho's Meditations

Osho introduced the concept of active meditations which touched people's lives beautifully.

Active meditations are performed standing up and moving the whole body in rhythm with a certain music and/or mantra. These meditations are very powerful, especially when performed in groups. The average Osho meditation lasts about an hour and it has four or five distinct stages.

In this book he answers to a question which sheds much light on autoeroticism, homosexuality, heterosexuality and celibacy. Question – When two Women or two Men are making love to each other. Does it do any harm to their energies?

Osho – Love is always preferable to lovelessness — that is the first thing to be remembered. Love in any kind and any form is more preferable than lovelessness. That is a basic assumption with me. But there are three planes of love. They have to be understood.

The first is auto, the second is homo, the third is hetero. One can be very narcissistic; narcissism is masturbatory. It has many dimensions to it. That is the first kind of love, the most primitive. Every child passes through that state of being narcissistic — he loves only himself, he is his own world. It is good as far as it goes. One has to love oneself; that should be the foundation. If you don’t love yourself you cannot love anybody else. If you can’t even love yourself, how can you love anybody else?

So the foundation is auto-erotic. Each child has to love himself, and parents down the centuries have been preventing it. That’s wrong. Children should be allowed to have fun; nothing is wrong in it. In fact, they are learning the first basic lesson of love — and they can love only themselves. Their consciousness is not so developed that they can bridge with anybody else. They have a small circle of energy; it moves within themselves.

So the first is auto; that is natural. It has been disturbed, it has been disturbed so much that the disturbance persists the whole life. Then other kinds and other planes of love are never as perfect as they could have been. It is only in this century that psychological investigations have proved that auto-love is perfectly natural, normal, and each normal child will be interested in it and he is not to be prevented.

Each child has to play with his own body so that he starts loving his body, so that he becomes sensuous about his body, so that he becomes more and more sensitive about his body, so that he has sheer joy in being in the body. That joy is missing.

If you have not loved your own body ever, then when somebody else loves your body you will shrink because you don’t know how to open. And if you have never loved your body and you have been taught to hate it, despise it, condemn it, when somebody else starts loving your body you will feel, ‘How foolish. How is it possible? How can anybody love MY body?’ And you will not be able to love somebody else’s body either, because bodies are bodies — yours or others, does not make any difference. Body is body.

First the body has to be loved, in deep reverence. In a more enlightened age, children will be taught how to love their body with respect, reverence, because the body is the temple of God. And from there their love will start flowering and will take a right direction.

The second kind of love is homo. That too is normal, natural. First the child loves himself, and then, naturally, he loves somebody who is like himself — that is a natural growth. A boy cannot suddenly love a girl, that is going too far. The girl is so different, another kind of animal. The girl cannot love the boy immediately, a bridge is needed. To move from oneself to the opposite polarity one has to go through somebody like oneself.

So from the masturbatory stage love moves to the homosexual stage. The boy will love a boy, the girl will love a girl. This is perfectly natural; there is nothing of pathology in it.

Pathology comes in only when somebody is stuck. If somebody is stuck at the first stage and is not able to love anybody, then there is some pathology. Then somebody can be stuck at the second stage — the second stage is better than the first but lower than the third.

One should take the jump and the man should be able to love the woman, and the woman should be able to love the man.

That is the hetero stage — the polar opposite. This is the natural course.

And then there is the fourth kind — the transcendence.. When you have passed all these three stages naturally, totally, a moment comes when you transcend sexuality. You are no more interested in sex — sex as such — your body, somebody else’s body . Men’s or women’s bodies don’t interest you. Not that you have any condemnation about the body; in fact, bodies disappear — there are only souls. The body is just the outermost core of it. It is a great shift in your consciousness.

That is the fourth stage, the stage of the SIDDHA. In India we have called the fourth stage BRAHMACHARYA — the state of being divine.

But that comes not by denying the third, not by denying the second, not by denying the first. It comes only if you go on fulfilling each plane in its own right.

Now there are a few things to be understood. The hetero relationship is the most difficult relationship, the most inconvenient, conflicting, because two opposite polarities are there — man and woman. They exist differently, hence they are attracted to each other… because they are so different, so mysterious to each other.

Man has never been able to understand how the mind of the woman functions, and so is the case from the woman’s side too. They are such different dimensions, hence the attraction to explore each other. But the difficulty is also there. Men and women love each other and hate each other; are together and are continuously nagging, fighting, struggling. There is a constant effort to dominate the other.

So the hetero relationship is the most inconvenient, although the most fulfilling too. So there is a danger, but there is a thrill. The danger is that there will be conflict, continuous fight. But only through that fight is one fulfilled, and only through that fight does one transcend sex.

The second stage — homo — is far better as far as convenience is concerned. Two men or two women are perfectly at ease with each other; they belong to the same mind, the same quality of energy; they are similar. The homosexual relationship is less troublesome. That’s why homosexuals look gay and heterosexuals look very sad. They are happy people because they are not in a constant fight and struggle and nagging. They understand each other. Lesbians are also happier women — because there is no problem, they function on the same wavelength, so things fit together, there is a rhythm, a kind of harmony. But fulfillment is also less.

Always remember: for the higher you have to pay higher. If you want deep fulfillment you have to take the trouble and you have to stake your life. It is risky.

Because of too much risk, many people have turned homosexual in the world — this world, this century, particularly. People have become alert about heterosexual relationship as being ugly. Continuous fight — who bothers? The whole life is so troubled. One wants to be happy somewhere at least. And even in love there is the same trouble and the same conflict and the same ego struggle. People are turning towards homosexuality. That is relapsing back. It is not good.

The first, the auto-sexual relationship, the relationship with yourself, masturbatory sex, is the most convenient, but there is no fulfillment. With the first there is no inconvenience but no fulfillment — at the most a sexual release. With the second there is a little trouble and a little fulfillment. With the third there is great possibility of both — trouble and fulfillment. They grow in the same proportion. And one should be alert to move from the first to the second, and from the second to the third. Then only can you move to the fourth, BRAHMACHARYA, celibacy.

Now, all over the world religious people have tried for celibacy, but they have not tried it in a scientific way. Somebody simply jumps into celibacy from his childhood. Then your so-called monks remain masturbatory. Or, the second possibility is that they will turn to homosexuality. Because monks are not allowed to mix with nuns and nuns are not allowed to mix with monks, there is every possibility that they will turn homosexual. That’s what happens in schools, colleges, hostels, in the army, wherever there is only one sex available — people tend to become homosexual.

Homosexuality has a function to fulfill in the growing child. Somewhere from the first year to the seventh the child remains masturbatory. From the seventh year to the fourteenth the child turns homosexual. From the fourteenth onwards he should, if things go naturally, in a natural way, turn heterosexual. And by the age of forty- two he will start being a celibate. And that celibacy will be a natural, spontaneous phenomenon, not a repression.

You ask: WHEN TWO WOMEN OR TWO MEN ARE MAKING LOVE TO EACH OTHER, DOES IT DO ANY HARM TO THEIR ENERGIES?

It does not do any harm but it does not do any benefit either. It is not harmful and it is not beneficial. Masturbation is harmful — beyond a certain stage it is harmful, it is destructive. A masturbatory person loses all contact with the world, he becomes unrelated, he becomes very egoistic because he feels he is enough for himself. there is no need to depend on anybody, not even for love. It is harmful.

Homosexuality is neither harmful nor beneficial. Heterosexuality is very beneficial.

These are the four possibilities, in fact, three possibilities of your sexual energy. Either, auto — but auto becomes closed, you become an island. Or, homo — you make a bridge, but you make a bridge man with man, woman with woman. It is not much of a bridge because both are the same. Not much difference is there. Or, hetero — the real pole, polarity, and the real bridge.

And only when you have bridged your sexual energies with the polarity does a new kind of integration arise in you, and that integration can become BRAHMACHARYA, can become celibacy.

Don’t think these are sins! These are natural growth points. The only thing to be remembered is: don’t get stuck anywhere. The goal is BRAHMACHARYA, one has to go beyond sex.

It is not that there is something wrong in sex, but that which through sex you will have only glimpses of, can be attained totally when you go beyond. In a sexual love moment, for a single second, time disappears, space disappears. For a single moment ego disappears. For a single moment you are lost into the cosmos. That’s why there is so much joy, so much ecstasy. That’s what orgasm is — the individual is lost into the whole.

But this happens only for a single moment, and not even always. So sex only opens a window and closes it again. You have to go beyond sex. Going beyond sex means going beyond the house, the confinement, going under the sun, going into the open sky. Then that ecstasy is yours, and it is constantly yours. A real saint, one whom I call a saint, is continuously in orgasm — that is my definition of a saint. His ecstasy is a natural phenomenon like breathing.

You may not have ever heard a definition like that, but that’s my definition. Jesus or Buddha or Mohammed are continuously in an orgasm. They don’t need anybody, they don’t need to connect with anybody, they don’t need any kind of sexuality. Their energy is constantly orgasmic because they have disappeared into the whole. The part no more exists, no more claims to be the whole. The part has become the whole, the wave has become the ocean — and that is their orgasm, that is their ecstasy.

Frequent ejaculation causes a chronic drain of the vital fluids that the brain and spine require to function properly.

If you can discipline a totally relaxed breathing, the duration of intercourse can be prolonged to any extent. And the longer intercourse lasts, the more the experience of the elements of superconsciousness – the egolessness and timelessness I have talked about – begins to take place. The breathing should be very relaxed. As it relaxes, newer depths, meanings and realizations in sex will begin to be revealed.

Another thing to remember, if during the act of intercourse your awareness is focused between the eyes, where yoga says the third eye center is, the duration of lovemaking can be extended up to three hours. And one such experience of intercourse can root the person in celibacy – not only for this lifetime but for the next life also.

The third thing is the state of mind in which you approach sex. You should approach sex as if approaching a shrine, because at the time of sex you are closest to existence. It is through sex that the divine can create and give birth to new life – so in sex we are closest to the creator. We become a passage for a new life to come through us. We become a birth-giver. Why is it so? Because that state, the state of intercourse, is closest to the creator itself. If we approach sex with sacredness, with prayerfulness, we can easily have a glimpse of the divine.

But we approach sex hating it, with an ill-feeling toward it, with an attitude of condemnation. That creates a wall and we fail to experience the divine there. Approach sex as if you are approaching a temple, a sacred shrine. Take your wife as if she is the divine. Take your husband as if he is the divine. And never approach sex while in ugliness, in anger, in hardness, in spite, in jealousy, in irritation, in moments of anxiety.

I request you to approach sex only when you are feeling bliss, feeling love, when you are cheerful, when you are prayerful; only when you feel that your heart is full of joy, peace and gratitude. Only a person who approaches sex like this can experience superconsciousness, Samadhi.

One’s attainment to celibacy from birth in this life is based on the experiences of deep coital union in previous lives and on nothing else. There is no other way. If one has had a profound experience of sex in a previous life, the person will be born free of sex in this life; sex will not disturb the person, even in his imagination. On the contrary, the person will be surprised at how other people behave about sex; the person will be amazed that people are so madly after sex. Such a person will even have to make a conscious effort to distinguish, to differentiate between a man and a woman.

If someone thinks one can simply become a born celibate without any deep experience of sex, that person is wrong; one will become insane, not celibate. Those who try to impose celibacy upon themselves only go insane, they reach nowhere. Celibacy cannot be imposed; celibacy evolves out of the experience of sex. It is the result of some profound experience – and the experience is of sex. If that experience can be had even once, the person is released from sex for the unending journey of lifetimes.
