TRACING THE EVOLUTION OF WOMANHOOD INTO SELFHOOD IN SELECT CONTEMPORARY FILMS VIDHYA VIJAYAN Research Scholar Department of English M G University, Kottayam, Kerala INDIA Film, the most popular media, has a tremendous impact to carve out how individual can feel about a particular topic. Indian films portrayed women characters as doubly marginalized creatures. In earlier times women were featured as a commodity only to satisfy male urge and their bodies were featured in a way as if they are meant for male consumption with some few exceptions. Now changes occur and women begin to play the role of central characters. The audiences also begin to perceive the makeover from the conventional girl to an iconoclastic woman. The present study focuses on three movies ‘Queen’ (Hindi), ‘How Old Are You?’ (Malayalam), and ‘Rani Padmini’ (Malayalam) with giving due emphasis on how the women characters are transformed or how they are emancipated in this patriarchal world. Three films mentioned here are highly inspirational and motivational story of women’s empowerment. TAKE A SAD SONG AND MAKE IT BETTER: AN ALTERNATIVE READING OF ANGLO-INDIAN STEREOTYPES IN SHYAMAPRASAD’S HEY JUDE (2018) Glenn D’Cruz ABSTRACT This Paper provides an alternative approach to understanding the function of Anglo- Indian culture in Shyamaprasad’s Malayalam language film Hey Jude (2018). Drawing on his theorization of Anglo-Indian Stereotypes in his book Midnight’s Orphans: Anglo-Indians in Post/Colonial Literature (Peter Lang, 2006), the author contests the reading of the film offered by Rajesh James and Priya Alphonsa Mathew in their recent article, ‘Between Two Worlds: Anglo-Indian Stereotypes and Malayalam Cinema.’ Rather than hastily dismissing representations of Anglo-Indians in Hey Jude as stereotypical and offensive, this critique of James and Mathew’s argument underscores the importance of situating the film in a broader context and paying more detailed attention to the cultural work performed by its themes and tropes. This paper is an exploration of the increasing trend of popular macho representations on the back of three-wheeled auto rickshaws in the Punjab, Pakistan. Through an ethnographic field research it was observed that the painted visuals of popular icons in clichéd heroic poses are rampant on rickshaws, representing a mobile exhibition of urban folk art. These visuals are mostly taken from the local Punjabi film industry, which has eclipsed over the past two decades. This study further explored the reasons for the increase of male figures displayed on rickshaws (and other) popular art and the almost total extinction of female figures because of increased religious assertion in Pakistan over this two- decade period. Our analysis shows that the relationship between rickshaw drivers and a common male audience with these powerful visuals is so strong that it reinforces the ‘impulse to image’. The power of macho visuals satisfies the taste of cinemagoers who love to travel by rickshaws loaded with such visuals. We argue that these macho ideal representations have a strong impact on the beholders and they influence society through the power they convey. Finally, this study concludes that the popular macho visuals effectively communicate real emotions and please the mood of vast audiences in particular segments of society.
