Bulletin of Education and Research December 2019, Vol. 41, No. 3 pp. 1-18 Role of the Muslim Anjumans for the Promotion of Education in the Colonial Punjab: A Historical Analysis Maqbool Ahmad Awan* __________________________________________________________________ Abstract This article highlightsthe vibrant role of the Muslim Anjumans in activating the educational revival in the colonial Punjab. The latter half of the 19th century, particularly the decade 1880- 1890, witnessed the birth of several Muslim Anjumans (societies) in the Punjab province. These were, in fact, a product of growing political consciousness and desire for collective efforts for the community-betterment. The Muslims, in other provinces, were lagging behind in education and other avenues of material prosperity. Their social conditions were also far from being satisfactory. Religion too had become a collection of rites and superstitions and an obstacle for their educational progress. During the same period, they also faced a grievous threat from the increasing proselytizing activities of the Christian Missionary societies and the growing economic prosperity of the Hindus who by virtue of their advancement in education, commerce and public services, were emerging as a dominant community in the province. The Anjumans rescued the Muslim youth from the verge of what then seemed imminent doom of ignorance by establishing schools and madrassas in almost all cities of the Punjab. The focus of these Anjumans was on both secular and religious education, which was advocated equally for both genders. Their trained scholars confronted the anti-Islamic activities of the Christian missionaries. The educational development of the Muslims in the Colonial Punjab owes much to these Anjumans. -

We need to complicate the idea of origins and `firsts’ because they highlight some dimensions of film culture and usage over others, and obscure the wider network of media technologies, cultural practices, and audiences which made cinema possible. In India, it is a matter of debate whether D.G. Phalke's Raja Harishchandra (1913), popularly referred to as the first Indian feature film, deserves that accolade. As Rosie Thomas has shown, earlier instances of the story film can be identified, includingAlibaba (Hiralal Sen, 1903), an Arabian Nights fantasy which would point to the presence of a different cultural universe from that provided by Phalke's Hindu mythological film. Such a revisionary history is critical to our research agenda. -

January 2016 NEWS COVERAGE PERIOD FROM JANUARY 25TH TO JANURAY 31ST 2016 GOVT BURDENS GAS CONSUMERS WITH RS101BN TO FINANCE PIPELINES Dawn, January 29th, 2016 KHALEEQ KIANI ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on Thursday decided to charge consumers of the two gas utilities Rs101 billion to partly finance pipeline network. At a charged meeting presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the committee also approved Rs3 per unit reduction in future power tariff for industrial consumers previously announced by the prime minister in December. It also regularised import of first six cargoes of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) in April-May last year through a floating storage terminal, but deferred a final decision on LNG sales and purchase agreement between Qatargas and Pakistan State Oil (PSO) until Friday. “It was a bad day for member gas (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, or Ogra) Amir Naseem,” said a cabinet member who attended the meeting, adding that the finance minister lost his temper at the beginning of the meeting over Ogra’s written comments against petroleum ministry’s summary on Rs101bn financing arrangement for gas companies. Ogra earlier opposed the recovery of Rs101bn from consumers through tariff, saying the pipeline projects should be financed out of Gas Infrastructure Development Cess (GIDC) already being collected from consumers. The regulator believed that it could not allow under the GIDC law the “double taxation” through gas tariff. Consumers, who were already paying GIDC for pipeline infrastructure, could not be burdened again with financing for repayment of Rs101bn loan along with 17 per cent return on assets to be created by the gas companies through these loans. -

Dept. of Journalism and Mass Communication Doaba College, Jalandhar Abstract The Punjabi film industry is currently in its growth stage. The Punjabis in the Diasporas gave a new dimension to the Punjabi identity. It has brought a massive boost in the cinema and film music. Pollywood in the North Indian film industry is commercial and art cinema Punjabi is in its initial stage. Producers target just clientele and seldom take the risk. Crisp comedy films overpower an experiment in production, rare themes and different genres. The research did a descriptive analysis with the support of unstructured and semi- structured interviews of producers, actors, and Pollywood directors. The research also explores the need and importance of film institute and film clubs to sensitize the Punjabi audiences regarding the film as a medium, film grammar, and aesthetics. The research also focused on the marketing trends and the vital role of social media in multiplexes' age. Pollywood also lacks in skills and availability of high-end studios for post-production. Indirect taxes and expensive multiplex as a hindrance to attracting rural audiences to remote areas in Punjab. Keywords: Pollywood, Diasporas, multiplex, approach, revival. Introduction Punjab of North India is the most fertile land it also called Sapta Sindhu in 'Vedas'. Agriculture is the main occupation in Punjab. Hard working Punjabis as community adapt to changing condition and adjust a lot faster than others. A considerable amount of literature and Vedas originated in Punjab. -

Portrayal of the Muslim Community and Islam by Indian cinema Post 9/11- An Analysis (published in JMS Vol 28 (1) and can be found online at : http://www.jms.edu.pk/ViewArticle.aspx?ArticleID=178) Abstract Indian cinema has been a mirror to the multidimensional nature of the subcontinent, be it in its portrayal of Indian culture, society, castes, classes, politics, art, or religion. Movies like Bombay depict the trauma of an inter-religious love and marriage of a young Hindu man and a beautiful Muslim woman, and their ultimate triumph, amidst a communal riot. Muslim terrorism was depicted in movies like Roja, Mission Kashmir, Maachis and others, with Kashmir and the Indo-Pakistan conflict as the theme. Minorities especially Muslims, as spies, traitors, or smugglers, has been a common theme in commercial cinema. This paper attempts to examine the representation of a minority community— the Muslims- in Indian cinema post 9/11. The paper presents a content analysis of the films New York, Anwar and Vishwaroopam. Predominantly, so far, the representation of this minority community in Indian cinema has remained within the dominant discourse, even in its stereotyping. Key words: Indian cinema, portrayal, Muslims, post 9/11, content analysis, stereotyping. Introduction In this era of communication explosion, wars begin and end with media (MEŠIĆ, Mirza). The media play a significant role in the process of social construction of reality and can be used as a potent weapon to mould and sculpt people’s perceptions, as the information that individuals are exposed to greatly influence their perception of the world. -

Proceedings, 8th International Conference on Language and Development, Bangladesh 2009 Gender Stereotypes in the Language of Pakistani Newspapers Sarwet Rasul Abstract Language, culture and media create a triangle in which each affects the other two and in turn is affected by them. As far as language is concerned, it is greatly influenced by social and cultural features, of which gender is an important factor. Choices of language are more gender biased in male dominant and female subservient societies. In Pakistan too, gender discrimination is a prominent feature of language use. Printed media clearly reflects this bias. The showbiz section that constitutes an important part of Pakistani newspapers also manifests gender specific language choices. The present research explores the language of the showbiz section of selected newspapers to examine how gender is portrayed in entertainment features of newspapers with reference to social and cultural stereotypes operating in our society. The data is categorized and analyzed from both linguistic and social perspectives. It is expected that the research would not only help in understanding gender specific language choices in Pakistani print media but would also be relevant to the Bangladeshi context in many ways. Issue in the Context of Pakistani Society Pakistan is a traditional patriarchal society with gender ideologies and disparities operating in different walks of life in favour of men and against women. The stereotypical image of women is created through their binary projection as incarnations of subordination, obedience, subservience, docility and compliance on one hand, and commodities to be purchased, used, and played with on the other. Like in most fields, Pakistani media also works under a structure in which women are either submissive sufferers or objects to entertain. -

153 Pritam Singh: Globalisation and Punjabi Identity Globalisation and Punjabi Identity: Resistance, Relocation and Reinvention (Yet Again!) Pritam Singh Oxford Brookes University _______________________________________________________________ Punjabiyat or Punjabi identity evokes simultaneous contradictory images of a splintered identity, yet a potentially powerful economic, political and cultural force. This paper attempts to capture different aspects of this contradictory nature by situating the conflicting pulls on Punjabi identity in the context of the ongoing process of globalisation of economy, politics and culture. One aspect of globalisation that is particularly taken into account is the role of the Punjabi diaspora in giving impetus both to the powerful imagining of a unified Punjabi identity and to many divisions in the global Punjabi community. Methodologically, the paper attempts to fuse mapping the historical lineages of Punjabi identity with an analytical interrogation of the idea of Punjabiyat or Punjabi identity. It concludes by outlining the potential for the emergence of a stronger Punjabi identity in spite of fissures in that identity. _______________________________________________________________ Introduction When thinking and writing about Punjabi identity, it seems we feel compelled immediately to mention one or other of those accompanying words whose purpose seems to be to qualify and problematise the subject of Punjabi identity. These accompanying words could be: examine, interrogate and explore.1 Though all of these words connote some degree of hesitation, each signifies a different nuance of that hesitation. If interrogation suggests some kind of scepticism and examination hints at a neutral stance, exploration certainly has a developmental and optimistic ring about it. Behind different shades of scepticism and optimism lie not only the attempts at objective unwrapping of the limitations and potentialities of Punjabi identity but also the political projects aimed at undoing and making it.
