2014 Citizenship Report

Connecting to what matters. We’re here to help.

While our core strength is helping our clients achieve their ambitions, people are the heart of our organization. We believe in making a difference to the individuals and communities we serve, creating opportunity, and doing our part to support causes that matter. These are the priorities that truly define us.

This year, we are especially proud of the number of opportunities we have helped to create through corporate citizenship. Through donations, sponsorships, fundraisers and volunteer activities, our people have strengthened ties with charitable organizations, opened countless doors and helped to enhance the lives of people across our geographies.

Our approach to corporate citizenship: • We create employment opportunities in our communities and support our employees along their career paths. • We embrace diversity of experience and thought so we can better Darryl White Chief Executive Officer understand and serve our clients. • We treat our BMO employees and clients with respect. • We encourage and enable our employees to perform service in their communities. • We consider the environmental impact of our business practices and growth strategies. • We volunteer and donate to worthy causes in our neighbourhoods, towns and regions.

Showing our support Our clients are as philanthropically minded as we are at BMO Capital Markets, and that’s why we like to support causes that are important to their charitable goals, as well as our own. One great way to do this is through sponsorship of charitable events. Supporting these events helps the organizations and their work, and also allows us 250 to spend time with our clients while doing some good. The type of organizations charitable and events we sponsor range from golf tournaments to galas, for everything from hospitals to educational programs. In 2014, BMO Capital Markets funded 250 charitable sponsorships sponsorships, totaling more than $2.1 million. Funding new ideas Supporting education is the top priority on the BMO Capital Markets corporate philanthropy agenda. One more way we show our support is through the BMO Capital Markets Advanced Research Scholarship. The honorarium, awarded annually, is given $2.1 to a PhD student performing research on a topic that is relevant to the financial million products business. The 2014 recipient was Pavel Krupskii, a PhD candidate at the in funding University of British Columbia, whose research in “Dynamic structured factor copula models and assessing risks of a portfolio of financial assets” won him the prize.

2014 Citizenship Report 6 Equity Through Education celebrates 10 years In 2005, BMO Capital Markets made a commitment to help create a more diverse workplace, internally and beyond. To help accomplish this, we launched Equity Through Education (ETE), a charitable initiative in which BMO Capital Markets donates one day’s worth of institutional equity trading commissions to organizations in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. that provide educational opportunities. The organizations we fund provide scholarships and development opportunities to students in four diversity groups: students of colour, women, students with disabilities, and Aboriginal students in Canada.

10th annual ETE trading day For our 10th annual ETE trading day, we expanded our successful program and introduced two new partners. The occasion was also marked by representatives from BMO and the ETE partners opening the TMX on the trading day, September 24, 2014. BMO’s partnership with these organizations does not end at the distribution of the cheque. Throughout the year, BMO participates in events built by the charities to help their students reach their full potential. BMO provides a panellist annually at the Jackie Robinson Foundation Mentoring and Leadership Conference, where JRF students across the U.S. learn everything from business etiquette to interview skills. BMO Capital Markets is also a participant in the Financial Women’s Association’s Wall Street Exchange, where a group of interns working in the industry receive weekly To date, the program has raised C$15 million leadership and development workshops from nearly every shop on the street. 9 BMO Capital Markets Employee Giving Campaign A hallmark of BMO’s culture is the annual BMO Employee Giving Campaign. Each fall, employees across donate their time and money to charitable causes close to their hearts.

hrough the BMO Employee Giving TCampaign, BMO employees can contribute to any charitable cause they are passionate about. Most employees, however, choose to support BMO’s charity of choice and strategic partner in the campaign: United Way. BMO partners with United Ways across Canada and the U.S. to provide opportunities for BMO employees to learn about the issues in their local community, and what United Generosity. For that reason, we are pleased to partner with Dress for Success, an organization that helps men and women who are looking for work find interview-appropriate attire. Beyond the clothes, Dress for Success also offers interview training and career development tools to help them succeed once they land the job. In 2014, BMO Capital Markets employees contributed more than 350 items to the Dress for Success Bay Street Suit Drive, contributing to the 9,300 items collected across the city of Toronto.

13 BMO Capital Markets Making the old new again In 2014, BMO began a technology refresh, something that happens every four years across the company. Seeing that the technology still had life in it, a third-year analyst pitched the idea of donating the technology to non-profit organizations, instead of recycling it through a disposal company.

BMO partnered with the National Cristina Foundation, as well as local charities we had existing relationships with, to roll out this initiative. View the thank-you video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf7BOzI1MwY

To date, 362 desktops have been donated to charitable organizations, along with 80 laptops, 658 monitors and 35 printers.

Volunteer Day One day each year, BMO employees across North America spend a few hours volunteering at United Way agencies and other local charities as part of BMO Volunteer Day. In 2014, nearly 5,500 employees “skipped work” to give back to the community – contributing 16,000 volunteer hours in a single day. BMO Volunteer Day provides opportunities for the bank’s employees to participate in charitable work and projects during business hours. It encompasses more than 370 projects in communities across Canada and the U.S., including children and youth organizations, elder care, food banks, community housing and health care facilities, family resource centres, parks and recreational facilities, supporting military personnel overseas, relief organizations and homeless shelters.

2014 Citizenship Report 14 The Women Build project was a two-week project, where each Women Build in Montreal day a different group of volunteers worked on the house. BMO On September 15, 2014, women from the BMO Capital Markets came in around the middle of the project. Not only did the office in Montreal participated in a Women Build event for Habitat attendees learn how to put membrane on a door, lay flooring for Humanity. The Women Build program encourages women to and put up insulation, it was also an excellent team building and come out and learn new skills, while helping build affordable networking opportunity for those involved. housing for a family in need.

Building connections & community Giving back is very important to BMO Capital Markets. Since it’s a key component of our corporate culture, we want to make sure our employees know it from the very start. This year for the first time, we built volunteering into the BMO Capital Markets orientation program, for all our incoming analysts and associates. On their first day of work at BMO, each new analyst and associate in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and London spent the afternoon volunteering together at a local not-for-profit organization. They gardened, served food, prepared hygiene kits and sorted donated clothing, all while getting to know their new colleagues.
