LOCATION

Located 110 kms north of Townsville and 245 kms south of Cairns, the sugar town of Ingham is the headquarters of the Hinchinbrook Shire in the Herbert River District and often referred to as “Australia’s Sugar Bowl”. Ingham is positioned between a wilderness of parks, waterfalls, and the waterways of the Hinchinbrook Channel.

The has a population of approximately 13,500 and includes an approximate population of 5,075 in the township of Ingham. The Ingham community is rich in cultural heritage, with a strong Italian influence due to 60% of the population being of Italian decent. The district’s Italian heritage is also the foundation for one (1) of the town’s most well known festivals – The Australian Italian Festival – a feast of Italian wine, cuisine, music, and culture – which is celebrated annually during May.

The principal Shire economy is rural based, with sugar cane farming being the dominant industry, with cane first being grown around the 1870s. As a result of the district’s rapidly growing sugar and pastoral industries, Ingham has continued to develop both economically and socially due to the expansion of these and many other industries. Employment is provided by the sugar industry, forestry, fishing, agriculture, retail, tourism, and government sectors.

The town of Ingham has a diverse range of shopping opportunities, and also has an excellent array of restaurants and cafes, guaranteed to tantalise the taste buds of all who visit the region. Close to the town centre, a number of interesting attractions which celebrate the town's unique heritage are all easily accessible and well worth a visit.

The latest development for Ingham located 800 m south of the town centre is the Tyto Wetlands Information Centre showcasing the spectacular birdlife and natural attractions of the region. This accredited information centre has information on what to enjoy during your stay in the Hinchinbrook Shire. Within easy walking distance of the centre is Tyto Wetlands – a “Birdwatcher’s Paradise”. The Tyto Wetlands are home to more than 230 different species, including the Eastern Grass Owl. Hundreds of Wallabies also appear at Tyto Wetlands in the afternoon and early morning, certainly adding to the wildlife experience.

Wallaman Falls is an outstanding attraction west of Ingham and is Australia’s most spectacular, longest, and permanent sheer drop waterfall. The water cascades more than 305 m down a sheer rock gorge from Stony Creek into the Herbert River. Early morning viewing of Wallaman Falls through a rainbow fringed cloud of mist is a breathtaking sight.

The Ingham Memorial Gardens is within walking distance from the main street of Ingham. The Texas Terror War Memorial is a monument situated in the Ingham Memorial Gardens which commemorates the loss of twelve American Soldiers on route to Amberley on the 18th December 1942.

The Ingham Cemetery, a five minute drive from Ingham, depicts the strong Mediterranean influences with a display of magnificent tile mausoleums.

Jourama Falls National Park, a terrace of cascading waterfalls and freshwater swimming holes. It is an excellent spot for bird watching, with many varieties being spotted daily.

Broadwater State Forest is located about 40 km northwest of Ingham and is a beautiful spot with a 1.6 km interpretive rainforest walk and home to the giant Broadwater Fig Tree. Broadwater is renowned throughout the north for its family orientated camping, swimming, and BBQ grounds. Mt Fox Crater was formed 100,000 years ago by a volcanic explosion, and is surrounded by a diverse range of flora, fauna, and geological specimens.

At the port of Lucinda, the bulk sugar terminal storage sheds hold mountains of golden raw sugar. The 5.76 km jetty is one of the longest bulk sugar loading facilities in the world. The jetty enables Lucinda to receive the largest ships used in the raw sugar trade.

The Victoria Sugar Mill, situated on Forrest Beach Road, is the largest mill in the Southern Hemisphere, and has the capacity to crush 4 million tonnes of cane. The Macknade Mill is the longest operating mill in Australia, being built in the early 1870s.

Another interesting highlight of Ingham is the Lee's Hotel, the original Pub with no beer. During World War II it was actually drunk dry by American servicemen celebrating the victory, and it was at this time that Dan Sheahan, a local farmer and quite a prolific Irish poet, sat in the corner with a warm glass of wine and penned the poem “A Pub Without Beer”. The poem was published in The North Queensland Register, and about twelve (12) years later Gordon Parsons found the verses, added his own characters, and set it to music. Gordon Parsons’ friend, Slim Dusty, recorded the song “The Pub With No Beer” as a b-side in 1957.

The protected waters of the Hinchinbrook Channel, offers anglers 365 days a year fishing opportunities. With the beautiful Hinchinbroook Island National Park as a backdrop, the Hinchinbrook Channel is an angler’s paradise. Hinchinbrook Island is the world’s largest island National Park

Lucinda is one of the best fishing spots in Queensland. It is the closest mainland connection to Hinchinbrook Island and the closest access point to the renowned Hinchinbrook Channel. People come in droves every year to try their luck in the channel.

Forrest Beach is a relaxing place to visit when you need to escape from the hustle and bustle. Forrest Beach has a long sandy beach overlooking Orpheus and the Palm Island group.

Taylors Beach is the central beach in the Shire, located between Forrest Beach and Lucinda. With the island and fringing reefs so close, Taylors Beach is a popular fishing destination for many.
