Ingham is positioned between a wilderness of parks, waterfalls, and the waterways of the Hinchinbrook Channel. The Shire of Hinchinbrook has a population of approximately 13,500 and includes an approximate population of 5,075 in the township of Ingham. The Ingham community is rich in cultural heritage, with a strong Italian influence due to 60% of the population being of Italian decent. The district’s Italian heritage is also the foundation for one (1) of the town’s most well known festivals – The Australian Italian Festival – a feast of Italian wine, cuisine, music, and culture – which is celebrated annually during May. The principal Shire economy is rural based, with sugar cane farming being the dominant industry, with cane first being grown around the 1870s.

    Queensland Parliamentary Library Prospects for Aquaculture and amendments to the Fisheries Act under the Primary Industries and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2003 (Qld) At least two recent developments have put the spotlight on aquaculture in Queensland. The first is the proposal for the development of a fish farm in Moreton Bay. Secondly, there has been an escalation in regulatory controls on recreational and commercial wild fish catches to guard against overexploitation. Aquaculture is a developing and promising Queensland industry that may have the potential to fill the gap between the public’s demand for fish and shellfish and the emerging shortage in wild fish supplies. However, there are a number of factors that impact upon the development of the aquaculture industry with environmental impacts of projects being a primary issue for producers. A number of regulatory controls on aquaculture developments are aimed at minimising environmental harm, including a development assessment process under the Integrated Planning Act 1997 (Qld). In recognition of the problems created for producers by duplication of planning and assessment processes, the Primary Industries and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2003 (Qld) has been introduced to amend the Fisheries Act 1994 (Qld) to require that certain fisheries development proposals are assessed under the Integrated Planning Act 1997. Richardson 3 SUBMISSION TO THE FEDERAL REDISTRIBUTION OF ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES IN QUEENSLAND BY BOB RICHARDSON COMMENTS ON SUGGESTIONS General:- • All of the ‘suggestions’ except mine left the existing 30 Divisions with the same names. • Most made only minor changes, especially in regional and rural areas. • While giving ‘lip service’ to the need to follow Local Government boundaries, as a means of ‘Community interest’ most did not address the problems of splitting cities, such as Mackay, Rockhampton, and the Fraser Coast. I believe that this, without having fit another Division in, is the opportunity for the Redistribution Committee to bring Divisions like Dawson back to where they traditionally belong. 4 DIVISION OF LEICHHARDT In my ‘suggestions’ I discussed the disadvantage to the residents on Cape York Peninsula (referred to hereupon throughout this submission as ‘the Cape’) and the Torres Strait Islands (referred to throughout this submission as ‘the Islands’), however I did not mention a matter closer to Cairns, the population growth of the Cairns area, from Palm Cave to Gordonvale.
