The research period was characterized by flooding events of different extent and duration. Floods directly affected the lake water properties and thus had an impact on the structure and growth dynamics of the ciliate community. Periphyton development and ciliate colonization were faster during the summer in comparison to the spring and stable ciliate community was also reached earlier during the summer. In both experimental series the sessile ciliate species of Peritrichia dominated in the periphytic community. The trophic structure of ciliate community changed over the exposure time. The bacterivorous and bacterivorous-algivorous filter feeders were dominant functional groups in periphyton. Structure and development of the ciliate community were mainly influenced by physico-chemical properties of water, concentration of chlorophyll in periphyton and water column, and periphyton biomass. • Symbionts and Diseases Associated with Invasive Apple Snails
Symbionts and diseases associated with invasive apple snails Cristina Damborenea, Francisco Brusa and Lisandro Negrete CONICET, División Zoología Invertebrados, Museo de La Plata (FCNyM-UNLP), Paseo del Bosque, 1900 La Plata, Argentina. Email: [email protected], fbrusa@ fcnym.unlp.edu.ar, [email protected] Abstract This contribution summarizes knowledge of organisms associated with apple snails, mainly Pomacea spp., either in a facultative or obligate manner, paying special attention to diseases transmitted via these snails to humans. A wide spectrum of epibionts on the shell and operculum of snails are discussed. Among them algae, ciliates, rotifers, nematodes, flatworms, oligochaetes, dipterans, bryozoans and leeches are facultative, benefitting from the provision of substrate, transport, access to food and protection. Among obligate symbionts, five turbellarian species of the genusTemnocephala are known from the branchial cavity, with T. iheringi the most common and abundant. The leech Helobdella ampullariae also spends its entire life cycle inside the branchial cavity; two copepod species and one mite are found in different sites inside the snails. Details of the nature of the relationships of these specific obligate symbionts are poorly known. Also, extensive studies of an intracellular endosymbiosis are summarized. Apple snails are the first or second hosts of several digenean species, including some bird parasites.A number of human diseases are transmitted by apple snails, angiostrongyliasis being the most important because of the potential seriousness of the disease. Additional keywords: Ampullariidae, Angiostrongylus, commensals, diseases, epibionts, parasites, Pomacea, symbiosis 73 Introduction The term “apple snail” refers to a number of species of freshwater snails belonging to the family Ampullariidae (Caenogastropoda) inhabiting tropical and subtropical regions (Hayes et al., 2015).

Res. Lab., P. G. Department of Zoology, J. P. University, Chapra, Bihar, India. Pin Code – 841301. Abstract: Vorticella stalk is the storehouse of two types of novel proteins, known with the names of spasmins and batonnets. On the basis of nature of proteins and the arrangements of amino acid residues of these proteins, the repeated consequential cyclic processes of contraction dynamics worked by neutralizing the negatively charged amino acid residues as per the laws obeyed by Heber-Weiss, Nernst and Fenton reactions. H+-integrated physiological performances in combination with pCa (partial pressure of calcium ion concentrations) and DNFB (2,4 – dinitrofluorobenzene/Sanger’s reagent) concentration gradients at the range of 1mM to 5mM represented velocity inclination in acidic medium which were more actively pronounced if it was compared with alkaline medium where permeabilized stalk exaggerated potential biochemical- shift-perturbation if it was in respect of non-permeabilized live specimens in both artificial as well as in natural medium in different experimental trials under controlled electro-physiological instrumental setup conditions. On the basis of these experimental designs it was confirmed

  • Systematic Index
Systematic Index The systematic index contains the scientific names of all taxa mentioned in the book e.g., Anisonema sp., Anopheles and the vernacular names of protists, for example, tintinnids. The index is two-sided, that is, species ap - pear both with the genus-group name first e.g., Acineria incurvata and with the species-group name first ( incurvata , Acineria ). Species and genera, valid and invalid, are in italics print. The scientific name of a subgenus, when used with a binomen or trinomen, must be interpolated in parentheses between the genus-group name and the species- group name according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. In the following index, these paren - theses are omitted to simplify electronic sorting. Thus, the name Apocolpodidium (Apocolpodidium) etoschense is list - ed as Apocolpodidium Apocolpodidium etoschense . Note that this name is also listed under “ Apocolpodidium etoschense , Apocolpodidium ” and “ etoschense , Apocolpodidium Apocolpodidium ”. Suprageneric taxa, communities, and vernacular names are represented in normal type. Page 1/27 Abstract Background Heterotrichous ciliates are common members of microeukaryote communities which play important roles in the transfer of material and energy ow in aquatic food webs. This group has been known over two centuries due to their large body size and cosmopolitan distribution. Nevertheless, species identication and phylogenetic relationships of heterotrichs remain challenging due to the lack of accurate morphological information and insucient molecular data. Results The morphology and phylogeny of two poorly known heterotrichous ciliates, Gruberia uninucleata Kahl, 1932 and Linostomella vorticella (Ehrenberg, 1833) Aescht in Foissner et al. , 1999, were investigated based on their living morphology, infraciliature, and small subunit (SSU) rDNA sequence data. Based on a combination of previous and present studies, detailed morphometric data and the improved diagnoses of both species are supplied here.

  • Interactions of Foodborne Pathogens with Freeliving Protozoa
Interactions of Foodborne Pathogens with Free-living Protozoa: Potential Consequences for Food Safety Mario J.M. Vaerewijck, Julie Bar´e, Ellen Lambrecht, Koen Sabbe, and Kurt Houf Abstract: Free-living protozoa (FLP) are ubiquitous in natural ecosystems where they play an important role in the reduction of bacterial biomass and the regeneration of nutrients. However, it has been shown that some species such as Acanthamoeba castellanii, Acanthamoeba polyphaga, andTetrahymena pyriformis can act as hosts of pathogenic bacteria. There is a growing concern that FLP might contribute to the maintenance of bacterial pathogens in the environment. In addition to survival and/or replication of bacterial pathogens in FLP, resistance to antimicrobial agents and increased virulence of bacteria after passage through protozoa have been reported. This review presents an overview of FLP in food-associated environments and on foods, and discusses bacterial interactions with FLP, with focus on the foodborne pathogens Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes. The consequences of these microbial interactions to food safety are evaluated. Keywords: Acanthamoeba, bacteria–FLP interactions, food safety, foodborne pathogens, free-living protozoa (FLP), Tetrahymena Introduction 1978) and Legionella pneumophila (Rowbotham 1980) in amebae. AESCHT Abstract: Delight and burden of naming - About names from the microscopic world. — A short history of desi- gnating mainly genera and species of ciliates (Ciliophora), which are relatively "large" and rich of characters, is gi- ven. True vernacular (genuine) names are understandably absent; German names have been established from 1755 to 1838 and in the last three decades of the 20lh century in scientific and popular literature. A first analysis from a linguistic point of view of about 1400 scientific names of type species shows that frequently metaphoric names have been applied referring to objects of everday use and somatic characters of well known animals including human beings. A nomenclaturally updated list of 271 species including German names is provided, of which numerous syn- onyms and homonyms have to be clarified cooperatively; 160 of these species are of saprobiological relevance and 119 refer to type species of genera. Malpractices of amateurs and scientists have been due to a confusion of nomen- clature, a formalized exact tool of designation, and taxonomy, the theory and practice of classifying organisms. It is argued that names in national languages may help to publicise the diversity and importance of microscopic orga- nisms; their description and labeling are a particular challenge to creative, recently underestimated linguistic com- petence. Key words: history of nomenclature, protozoans, ciliates (Ciliophora), scientific and vernacular names, populariza- tion, taxonomy. „Nur Namen! Aber Namen sind nicht Schall und Rauch.

Limnological Institute, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ulan-Batorskaya Str., 3, Irkutsk, 664033, Russia ABSTRACT. Changes in biocenoses of the shallow water zone of open Lake Baikal continue. In the autumn of 2019 during scuba dives, we recorded abundant fouling of macrophytes in the littoral zone by ciliates of the subclass Peritrichia, the genus Vorticella, at the Listvyanka settlement – Bolshiye Koty settlement section (west coast of Southern Baikal). Despite the fact the Vorticella are the permanent component of the Bailak periphyton, such mass development of Peritrichia in the littoral zone of open Baikal has not been previously recorded. Increasing anthropogenic pressure in the littoral zone of the lake can be one of the main causes of this outbreak in the abundance of Vorticella cf. campanula, the main species of this fouling. Keywords: ciliate, Vorticella, bacteria, Lake Baikal, abundance 1. Introduction Periphyton serves as one of the important indicators of the ecological state in aquatic ecosystems The open littoral zone (i.e. the littoral zone of (Abakumov et al., 1983). Underwater observations indigenous Lake Baikal except for warm bays) of Lake that were carried out from October to December 2019 Baikal occupies approximately 7% of its area. The indicated the continuing changes in the composition landscape of the underwater slope on the western side and distribution of benthic biocenoses in the open of Southern Baikal composed of crystalline bedrocks of littoral zone of the lake, in particular, the periphyton.

About 10 morphotypes have been reported, but any molecular investigations concerning this group so far are lacking. In this work, the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SS rRNA) gene of three marine Condylostoma species was sequenced, by which the phylogenetic trees were constructed by distance- matrix, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference methods. The results show that (1) all the trees have similar topologies with high supports; (2) Condylostoma is mostly related to the genus Condylostentor; and (3) three Condylostoma species as well as Condylostentor auriculatus cluster together and form a sister group with other heterotrichs. This is moderately consistent with the assessment of phylo- genetic relationships of Condylostoma-related heterotrichs from the morphological information. The phylogenetic relationship of some other related heterotrichs, Peritromus, Folliculina, Stentor and Blepharisma, has been also discussed.
