Abstract The article provides an overview of descriptions of total solar eclipses in different literature forms, rites and toponyms of Slavs. It is shown that the solar eclipse had a prominent role in the worldview of the tribes. Explanations of some terms of Slavic outlook are given with suggestions for the correct terminology. A program for further investigation in Slavic and other people’s culture is proposed. Je jako mystická šamanka, která ti pomáhá najít skrytou moudrost a čistou pravdu. Někdy je potřeba věci nejdříve pustit, aby se mohly transformovat. Dovol si prožívat její kvality, například ve fázi stařeny během tvého menstruačního cyklu. Nezapomeň, že pro vodu neexistují překážky, umí je obtéct, podemlít, prosáknout, dokud nedosáhne svého cíle. Využij jejích kvalit. Kaže se kot okostnjak s koso, ki ne prizanaša sleherniku, ker smo pred njo vsi enaki. Gre za predstave, ki so nastale iz poganskih razmišljanj in iz katerih smo ljudje prišli do enega izmed ključnih spoznanj: vsako življenje se začne z rojstvom in se neizbežno konča s smrtjo. Pri naših prednikih Slovanih je bil zaključek posameznikovega življenja družbeno obredno zelo poudarjen. Smrt je bila v vsakdanjem življenju prisotna drugače kot danes. Slovani so svoje mrtve, katere so delili na »čiste« in »nečiste« pokojnike, pokopavali na različne načine (upepeljevanje, skeletni pokop), na različnih mestih (ob cerkvah, v hišah, v čolnih, v izdolbenih drevesnih deblih, na saneh, v krstah). Verjeli so v posmrtno življenje ter v dušo, vezano na telo, in v svobodno dušo, o čemer pričajo številni arheološki podatki o načinih pokopavanja ter različne šege in verovanja. Številne šege in navade naših prednikov so se ohranile vse do danes, vendar je njihov prvotni pomen pozabljen ali drugače razlagan ter zgolj še navada. Ključne besede: Slovani, smrt, pogrebne šege in navade, slovanski grobovi, žrtvovanje. HUMANITIES INSTITUTE RUSSIAN MYTHOLOGY Ayse Dietrich, Ph.D. Introduction Mythology takes as its subject the significance of the objects that exist in the world, natural events, and the private matters and objects of social life from an emotional point of view. Mythology is the identification of humanity with nature, making the powers of nature one’s own in the imagination. In the face of natural events, the first humans were powerless, both before the events within themselves and those that came from outside. Therefore, it is directed at describing events and objects that were considered taboo, or embodying and personalizing events or objects that the mind could not grasp. Identifying itself with all living and non-living thing from the very beginning, the human mind tried to express them through various objects and symbols. The rustle of leaves, thunder, bird calls, and lightning striking – all these natural events were perceived by humans as a sign of good or evil, life or death. Mythological images are indirect expressions of humans’ internal worlds and emotions. Emotions override reason. Mythological images do not consist only of imaginary depictions. They also have the quality of making living in harmony with human desires and emotions, and acting together easier. In this context, The subject of Russian mythology consists of the belief of the Russian people, who planted fields, worked the land, and spent their lives together with animals such as eagles and wolves, that supernatural powers directed the fates of men, and the symbols and gods that before and after the coming of Christianity were passed down from generation to generation. -

Introduction to Byliny, Russian Heroic Poems By Luceta di Cosimo, BMDL, Aethelmearc. ©2005-2016 [email protected] The byliny (pleural of bylina) are Russian epic songs that are loosely tied to historical events of 11-16th centuries. Byliny were first collected in the mid to late 18th century. The first serious collection was collected in mid 1700s, by Kirsha Danilov, probably a krepostnoy (a serf) folk singer from Ural mountains for his master, a land and factory owner, P.A. Demidov. This collection was first published in 1804. Many other collections folowed. The bylina tradition seems to have died out in 1960’s; however, now seems to be on the rise again. The scholar who rediscoverd byliny was P.N. Rybnikov, who accidentally overheard a singer entertaining a group of travellers in 1860 in the Kizhi district. By the nineteenth century, the byliny survived only in the north of Russia, were performed for entertainment, and were sung by a single singer without music. Rubnikov later collected several hundred byliny in many variants, and published them between 1861-1867. A.F. Gilferding collected about 300 hundred tales from the same region in 1871-1872, which were published posthumously in 1873 as another collection.1 The term bylina (something that has happened), as applied to this sung folk epic was first used by Sakharov in 1830, the performers themselves used the term starina (something that is old).2 Performers and Performance: By the time byliny were collected, peasants in the Northern Russia were the only ones still performing byliny; however, there is some evidence that earlier, skomorokhi (travelling minstrels) and kaliki perekhozhiye (religious pilgrims) were also performers of byliny. -
