Design Thinking
Design Thinking.
What is it? Design Thinking is a methodology used by designers to solve complex problems, and find desirable solutions for clients. Whilst a lot of businesses have just started getting on board with this methodology, it has been slowly developing since the 1960s, and has had multiple names.
Surprisingly... My final outcome has stayed true to my initial vision. I wanted to do a publication about Design Thinking that went into detail about it’s history, and how you could use it in your own work.
Why? Through interning at IBM for twelve months over 2015–2016 I was heavily exposed to Design Thinking. We used it heavily in my department, the Interactive Experience Studio. Before this I didn’t know what it was, but it’s popularity has continued to grow. I hoped this book could be a great reference for designers, in particular students. I hope to continually refer to this book for the remainder of my degree, and once I enter the workforce.

Planning During my initial sketches for the physical book, I came up with ideas for creating a book with die- cuts for a set of post-its, and a sharpie. The content I’d get interviews from people in the design industry. I planned to have a mix of my old coworkers, and designers/researchers from other studios/agencies. I also set out to run my own design thinking workshop with participants, but ran out of time to do this in the final version.

Research From the initial plans this was going to be a heavy research based book. I read numerous websites and articles, referred back to documentation I used at IBM and interviewed leaders in the design field.

First off I was hoping to house a set of post-its, and a sharpie; but left out the sharpie as I was losing too much space.
