After endless death and hardship at the hands of the Thirty Years' War and the bubonic plague, the surviving population of Oberammergau vowed that they would perform the "play of the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years if they were spared from extinction. Jesus enters Jerusalem © Passion Play Oberammergau 2020 Jesus enters Jerusalem © Passion Play Oberammergau At Whitsun in 1634, they kept their promise for the first time and so began the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play which demonstrates the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ. As early as the middle of the 18th-century, spectators came to Oberammergau from all over Germany, attracted by the great power and mystique of the play. The villagers have kept their vow ever since and their faith and commitment has been recognised and admired around the world and is regarded as one of the most important passion plays. The village at the edge of the Bavarian Alps expects approximately 450,000 visitors for the passion play, over half of which will be international guests, during the 102 planned performances in 2020. Architectural transformations on the Market Square in Krakow A systematic visual catalogue Jean-Yves BLAISE Iwona DUDEK Different faces of one ‘idea’ Section three, presents a selection of analogous examples (European public use and commercial buildings) so as to help the reader weigh to which extent the layout of Krakow’s marketplace, as well as its architectures, can be related to other sites. Market Square in Krakow is paradoxically at the same time a typical example of medieval marketplace and a unique site. But the frontline between what is common and what is unique can be seen as “somewhat fuzzy”. Among these examples readers should observe a number of unexpected similarities, as well as sharp contrasts in terms of form, usage and layout of buildings.

The building dates from 1405 to 1410 and has not been fundamentally altered since. The only exception is that it was carefully continued between 1595 and 1614, when it acquired an extended figurative façade decoration based on the forms of the Weser Renaissance that were current at the time.
