Chocolate, waffles, beer and even frites can be enjoyed wherever you go around the country, with artisan producers putting their own unique spin on these culinary classics. Traditions go back hundreds of years, especially when considering brewing techniques, and so there is also a rich history behind the food here. It’s not just street eats that earn the accolades, though. Belgium is slowly growing its range of Michelin-starred restaurants that merge well with the authentic taverns that offer hearty, comfort food. The country has a reputation for being fairly laid-back, with slow-paced cities like Bruges and Ghent providing storybook settings for a relaxing city break. Don’t mistake this as being boring though, as there is plenty of history and culture waiting to be discovered in the major cities of Flanders. Whether you are lured by the surrealist art of Brussels, the Gothic architecture of Leuven or the fashion of Antwerp, your trip will be anything but mundane. Another big draw of Belgium is the fact that it is so easy to get to. You can choose to fly, take advantage of the short Eurostar services or even set sail on board a ferry. Plus, once you arrive, many of the major destinations are small enough to explore in just a few days, making them the ideal choice for a last-minute weekend getaway. Two of the country’s biggest and most popular cities, Brussels and Bruges, offer all of the above and more. Bruges’s peaceful canals provide a captivating city in which you can wander the cobbled streets and gaze up at the many church spires and towers. When night falls, and the day visitors leave, this fairy tale destination turns the charm up a notch. Beautiful floodlighting streaks across the pavements alongside the canals – perfect for an after dinner stroll. Meanwhile, in Brussels, the spectacular Grand Place demands most of your attention, earning its position as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Elsewhere, a multicultural mix of architecture, cuisine and people prove that the Belgian capital is the perfect place to hold the headquarters of the EU. Whilst locals sit in cafés and bars with a well-brewed beer in hand, you can choose to join them for a relaxing afternoon or head off to discover the many attractions on offer.

Rochefort Chimay Belgium Rail Travel & Beer When travelling from the UK, Belgium is one of the easiest destinations to reach by train. Frequent Eurostar services can get you to Brussels in just two hours and from there you can reach any major city in the country, or travel further into Europe. High- speed services allow you to get there quickly, whilst giving you the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the scenery. When it comes to beer, the Belgians do it better than most. Without strict rules governing purity and ingredients, the brewers of the past were free to interpret the beer-making process however they liked. This, as well as an open mind, has enabled modern brewers to produce a wide range of tipples that each have their own complexity of flavour but still remain unmistakably Belgian. One thing is for sure, if you walk into a pub unsure of what you want to drink, there will be endless options from which to choose. Highlights • Train World, Brussels – As the website states, this interesting museum will show you the impressive ‘track record’ of Belgian trains, along with a look to the future. • ’t Brugs Beertje, Bruges – This traditional pub is tucked away on one of the side streets in Bruges’s old town and serves 300 different bottled beers. • Zythos Beer Festival, Leuven – Many Belgian cities have their own beer festival, but Leuven’s is one of the biggest and best. • Schaarbeek Beer Museum, Brussels – Featuring old bottles, glasses, pub signs and brewing machines, this museum is a must for beer lovers. • Gruut Brewery Tour, Ghent – This brewery takes an old school medieval approach to beer-making. There are tours available that include samples and local snacks.

Did you know? Notoriously hard to describe, Belgian beers have around 700 different taste profiles. Belgians consume nearly 1.5 billion pints a year and the country exports twice as much as it produces.

There are seven inhabited isles in this perennially sunny archipelago, all of which can provide soaring temperatures in the summer and some of the best destinations for a winter break. Although brought together under one name, each island has its own unique look and feel. One thing they do have in common, though, is their volcanic nature. From black sand on some beaches to large rock formations, the islands show obvious signs of the volatile start to life they endured. Many of the volcanoes are distinct or dormant now, but Tenerife’s Mount Teide, the largest, is still active. The geography and geology associated with this volcanic activity has resulted in the Canary Islands being home to some fantastic vistas. The eastern and central islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura tend to be the most popular spots for British travellers, all offering beautiful beaches and excellent water sports. However, it is only when you venture outside of the resorts that you start to experience real Canarian culture in the form of Tenerife’s Michelin-starred restaurants, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s history and Fuerteventura’s North African atmosphere. The western islands are much more untouched and green, largely because they are younger than the rest of the group. Tourist numbers are likely to be much lower here and they often attract people with certain hobbies and interests. The breathtaking natural parks of traditional La Gomera are a walker’s paradise, the clear skies of El Hierro are perfect for stargazing and the sheer beauty of La Palma tends to appeal to photography fans. Whichever way you look at it, though, these three unspoilt islands are an ideal place to relax. Lanzerote La Palma

When you consider the sheer volume of famous attractions and stunning landscapes it can offer, though, it’s really not that surprising at all. Monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and Le Pont d’Avignon are known all over the world and are instantly recognisable, but this is just one layer of its desirability. France’s culture is just as loved as its attractions, with many people admiring a laid-back approach to life and an attitude that focuses on family and food. Romance is another alluring factor and a big reason why people visit the country. Whether that’s in terms of its people, its buildings, its cuisine or its scenery, it’s more than just a stereotype. And speaking of scenery, there’s so much of it to admire. From the lavender fields of Provence to the banks of the River Seine and the beaches of the French Riviera, this diversity of landscapes is what keeps people coming back again and again. These views are not simply superficial, though, as there is a lot of history behind these important places. You could explore the beaches of Normandy, where thousands of men gave up their lives during the D-Day Landings; you could wander through the enchanting gardens of Monet’s house in Giverny, where the artist lived and worked for 43 years; or you could learn about age-old wine-making traditions in some of the world’s most famous regions, including Champagne, Bordeaux and Burgundy. One further way in which romance is expressed is through art, another thing for which the country has a big passion. World class galleries can be found in various different cities and the vestige of literary figures like Camus and Sartre can be felt in quiet cafés and bars.

Between the Holy Roman Empire and its inclusion within the German Empire, areas of modern day France and Switzerland were also considered to be part of this independent realm.

62 Tailor your holiday with additional stays, regional departures or rail travel www.fredholidays.co.uk Germany Düsseldorf The best place to discover the heart of Düsseldorf and learn all you can about its culture is to head to the Aldstadt. The Old Town has something for everyone and is just as popular with those who like to party as it is with travellers looking for historical and cultural attractions. The relatively small area is often known as Europe’s longest bar, because it is home to 260 different pubs, clubs, restaurants and bars. There are culinary delights that range from local to international flavours and various different shops to discover. Compare that to the modern architecture found in the MedienHafen (Media Port) and you start to see the mix of old and new that Düsseldorf boasts. The regeneration of the Rhine harbour has allowed famous architects like Frank Gehry and Chipperfield to put their own interpretation on older buildings without destroying their charm. Buildings like Stadttor and Colorium are perfect examples of this. Whichever part of the city you chose to explore, you’ll soon recognise why this is a city of fine arts. There are more than 100 different galleries here, along with 26 museums and special annual events such as Düsseldorf Photo Weekend that celebrate the Rhineland-Palatinate capital’s love of art. No other German city can claim so many artistic attractions and chief among them is the Kunstakademie, from which the likes of Paul Klee, Joseph Beuys and Andreas Gursky have all graduated.

Did you know? Düsseldorf’s Old Town is often called ‘the longest bar in the world’ because there are more than 300 places to grab a drink in this small area.

Highlights • Rheinturm – Standing high above the rest of the skyline, the Rhine Tower can provide breathtaking views during day and night. • Königsallee – This is one of Europe’s most famous shopping streets. The high-end brands found along this picturesque promenade include Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. • North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection – This institution is spread across three different buildings. The K20 is home to modern paintings; the K21 displays modern drawings, sculptures and films; and the Schmela Haus is where you will find temporary exhibits. • Schlossturm – This is what remains of the castle which once loomed over the city. Inside, you will find the SchiffahrtsMuseum. • Hofgarten – A tranquil retreat within the city centre, this park provides somewhere to relax amongst streams and meadows. You can also see a hunting lodge which once played host to Napoleon.

The Museum embankment can be seen just across the river and features no less than nine attractions dedicated to art, film, architecture and more. Flat land is perfect for agriculture and so it’s no surprise to see fields upon fields blooming with vibrant tulips during the spring. In addition, the brisk breezes from the North Sea led to many windmills being installed around the country, creating a milling industry which played a key part in its history. Many of these, such as those in Kinderdijk, are now part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As well as farming, the Dutch took advantage of the flat land, 20% of which lies below sea level, when deciding how to get around. Cycling is a way of life here, with more than a quarter of all journeys being taken on two wheels. The natives' love of their ‘fiets’ (Dutch for bicycle) has led to an extensive system of cycle paths being created, enabling locals and visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery. If you are not already, a visit to the Netherlands is likely to get you acquainted with the Dutch Masters. Names such as Rembrandt, Van Gough and Vermeer appear in galleries in the major cities, whilst Dutch design can be admired in the form of iconic canals and charming fishing towns like Hoorn and Volendam. Whilst many countries in Europe have a café culture, this can be confusing in the Netherlands. The atmosphere of the cafés here is more similar to that of a pub, with people catching up over a local beer or Dutch gin. Brown Cafés, so called because of their dark-panelled interiors and smoke-stained walls, are the most widely seen examples of this, offering a cosy environment that bursts to life in the hours after people leave work.

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s great museum cities, many of which focus on paintings produced by some of the biggest names in the art world. Aside from these, the Anne Frank House offers a poignant look into the past and there are quirky institutions based on Dutch symbols like tulips and the canal boat. The fjords are one of the most loved cruise destinations (for good reason) and they’re no less breathtaking when viewed from the shore. These striking inlets are home to excellent hiking trails, jaw-dropping waterfalls and fascinating wildlife. In short, from the shores of the Lofoten Islands to the peaks of the Lyngen Alps, Mother Nature took great care in creating this part of the world. With all these landscapes to explore, it’s no surprise that the country is a key destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Thrilling activities such as white water rafting and husky sledding are just a small taster of what is on offer. Plus, the remote areas where many of these take place provide the perfect conditions in which to see the Northern Lights and experience the long period of continuous daylight known as the Midnight Sun. If the natural aesthetics weren’t enough, man has added to Norway’s allure in various different ways. Colourful fishing villages reveal a slice of everyday life and a look into one of the country’s most important industries, whilst structures like the Tromsø Bridge force you to take a step back in admiration. This not only highlights Norway’s flair for design but also proves that its cities are some of the most charming in Europe. Alta Thanks to Norway’s history of exploration, it has many Arctic outposts situated north of the mainland. Places like Svalbard Tromsø and Jan Mayan add another dimension to the country’s otherworldliness and are home to spectacular wildlife in the form of polar bears and Arctic foxes. Back on the mainland, the seas, air and land are also filled with beautiful creatures. Despite attractions dedicated to famous figures like Ibsen and Edvard Munch, the cosmopolitan capital of Oslo has both feet in the here and now. It has a thriving contemporary art scene, is littered with modern architecture and can offer restaurants that are able to go toe-to-toe with Europe’s elite. It’s also been named European Green Capital for 2019. Believe it or not, the city of Bergen used to be Norway’s capital. A quintessential fishing town, there is plenty of maritime history to look back on here. The coloured houses of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bring the harbour to life and a growing student population ensures the vibe continues into the evening. As one of the best destinations in which to see the Northern Lights, Tromsø is the gateway to the Arctic. The landscape here is different to more southern Norwegian cities, with snow staying in the highest parts all year and everywhere else having a more rugged look. Its somewhat remote position shouldn’t lead you to think it’s quiet, though. Poland Poland is a mixture of cities with architecture representing different styles through the years and wide open spaces that are just begging to be explored. Popular destinations like Warsaw and Kraków feature buildings that tell the story of an ever-changing landscape, switching from Gothic to Renaissance to modern in a matter of a few hundred paces. Part of this is down to the tragedies that Poland has suffered in the past and the way cities have been rebuilt and restored since. It’s impossible to ignore the fact that the country was caught up in the middle during WWII and suffered heavily because of it. Whilst there are thought-provoking ways for history fans to learn about the past, this isn’t dwelt on too much. Some of the major Jewish communities are thriving again and Warsaw synagogues are being respectfully reinstated. Going back further in time, there is also plenty of history related to kings and knights over hundreds of years. Poland’s natural beauty largely goes unnoticed, but it is a surprisingly good destination for scenic walks. The mountains in the south are home to winding trails that take you through various different landscapes, whilst the lakes in the north provide the perfect setting for adventurous activities such as canoeing and sailing. Fans of hearty, home-cooked meals will be pleased to hear that this is what Poland does best when it comes to food. Many of the national dishes are born from humble beginnings but use local and sustainable ingredients to warm your stomach in a delicious way. You’re in luck if you have a sweet tooth, too. A wide range of decadent desserts can be found in restaurants and cafés to offer an indulgent snack or help you end a meal on a sugary high note.

Although its overseas territories are now limited to the Azores and Madeira, influences from former colonies such as Angola and Brazil are clear for all to see. As is the impact created by invading forces like the Celts, Romans and Moors. All of this means that Portugal is a country full of intriguing history and interesting architecture. The border with Spain is dominated by walled towns that were fortified by ancient monarchs, whilst stone carvings and megaliths in places such as Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Évora take you back thousands more years into the past. History isn’t the only draw of this unified country, though. There are many other reasons to visit, including the fantastic city breaks that can be enjoyed in the major destinations of Lisbon and Porto. This vast, often secretive, land is a melting pot of imperial cities, remote towns and beautiful natural landscapes. Its people, contrary to what the British media often portrays, are very friendly and all share the pride and passion for their country that you would expect from anyone living somewhere nicknamed ‘Mother Russia’. The most visited cities lie in Europe and are characterised by onion-domed churches and resplendent palaces holding mesmerising jewels and riches. Often thought to be a grey, concrete Soviet jungle, life here is much more colourful than you might expect. Art and history are behind some the most important attractions and literary figures like Tolstoy and Pushkin have left breadcrumbs all over these cities for those who are interested to follow. Within the more remote locations, things feel slightly different, but still unmistakably Russian. The locals’ penchant for vodka is unwavering and the architecture feels familiar in design, if a bit more spread out than in the major cities. Further east is also where you will find many of Russia’s most breathtaking natural spots. The giant Lake Baikal is the largest ice-free freshwater lake in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the Caucuses Mountains in the south offer excellent hiking trails and ski slopes. Obtaining a Russian visa may not be the most straight-forward thing in the world but, once done, the treasures of this enigmatic country are waiting to be discovered. And besides, our experienced team is on hand to help with the red tape that can otherwise put people off from visiting.

Having spent a lot of his time here, much of the architecture is designed by Antoni Gaudí, culminating in the stunning, but unfinished, Sagrada Família, where he is buried. As you stroll between the unique neighbourhoods, you get a feeling for their subtle differences whilst also realising they are linked by Catalonian passion. From the shops and bars of the historic Las Ramblas to the modern buildings of Sant Martí, food is used as a form of communication and you’re never too far away from a fiesta. Highlights • La Sagrada Família – Barcelona’s most famous landmark has been under construction since 1882 and is unique in many ways. • Park Güell – Admire some more Gaudí architecture in this sculpture park made to blend in with the nature around it. • Camp Nou – It’s impossible to navigate the city without hearing of its beloved football team. Visit this captivating stadium for a taste of the action. • Port Olimpic – This area is home to a harbour filled with luxury yachts and some of the city’s quieter beaches. • Mercat de Santa Caterina – Take a trip to this local market to sample some of the delicious morsels Barcelona can offer.

Did you know? There are 12 abandoned metro stations below the streets of Barcelona. Many people believe these are haunted and there are ghost tours available for the brave.

Names like Picasso and Goya resonate along the halls of attractions such as the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, whilst outside, every brick is purposefully placed to create architectural beauty. At night, the streets come alive with music and dancing, fuelled by moreish local cuisine. In contrast, it is the buildings that are Moorish in Seville. Standing tall, yet blending with those influenced by later empires, the signs of Arabic heritage are there for all to see. This is the birthplace of Flamenco and the perfect place to see it in all its glory. And as the passion spills out onto the streets, it’s used to drive energetic festivals such as the Semana Santa. Highlights • Museo del Prado, Madrid – One of the world’s greatest art galleries. Look out for pieces by Velázquez, Botticelli and Albrecht Dürer. • Parque del Buen Retiro, Madrid – This relaxing park features fountains, ponds and some fascinating monuments. • El Rastro, Madrid – This busy Sunday market is home to treasures just waiting to be discovered. • Real Alcázar, Seville – A resplendent, UNESCO-listed palace with beautiful gardens, it is still used by today’s royal family. • Triana Neighbourhood, Seville – There’s no better spot to enjoy some tapas or a flamenco show than in this authentic district.

Did you know? Madrid’s coat of arms features a bear and a strawberry tree. The bear is said to represent the city’s council and the tree represents a treaty signed between clergymen and the council regarding the use of local forests.

Its serene lakes and commanding peaks can provide a mixture of adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures and relaxing breaks on which you can reconnect with yourself and the loved ones around you. Whether it’s a cable car ride to the top of Mount Titlis or a gentle cruise across the calm waters of Lake Geneva, this peaceful nation has so much to offer. Whilst the lakes and mountains are perfect for extreme sports and leisurely hikes, the major cities of Switzerland are ideal for a short city break. Destinations such as Lucerne, Geneva, Bern and Zürich are all home to fantastic cultural activities, Swiss delicacies and a laid-back way of life. As you walk through the quiet streets, you’ll be greeted by smiling faces, plenty of opportunities to shop, and numerous cafés and restaurants in which to grab an indulgent fondue or some of the world- famous chocolates. What’s more, many of the major Swiss cities offer free transport for anybody staying in a local hotel. This makes travelling from one place to another really easy and, with the trains running as meticulously as the country’s timepieces, getting around is practically seamless. As a year-round destination, Switzerland can be a great holiday choice in summer or winter. When the sun comes out, people head to the banks of the lakes to cool off and enjoy a freshly caught feast, whilst the winter months bring ski enthusiasts to the Alps and give you an excuse to explore a museum or two (as if you needed one). Consistently ranked as one of the happiest and most liveable countries in the world, the people of Switzerland have power over any laws passed in parliament. However, they are unlikely to oppose the social rules that help to maintain peace and quiet every Sunday.
