Architecture, University of Cincinnati, 2011 First Committee Chair: John Hancock Second Committee Chair: Michael McInturf Abstract Contemporary rural architecture, particularly of rural Midwestern Ohio, produces uninspiring, abject, and cheap architectural solutions that become universally accepted, yet that ignore the depth and complexity of meanings and particularities of place inherent in their geographic, cultural, and historic relationships. Through a hermeneutic and phenomenological enrichment of Critical Regionalist theory and practice, this thesis develops an architectural design process for Saint Henry, Ohio and the surrounding Midwestern Ohio region that reveals the subtle architectural and cultural regional identities. Critical Regionalism, as explored by Kenneth Frampton, works within the mediation of technological universality and traditional regionality to produce architecture that poetically engages specifics of its time and place. These well-known ideas are deepened through a phenomenological understanding of experience as ongoing interpretation of already- existing traditions, meanings, and relationships. Specifically understood through five relationships of geography and place; history and time; culture and identity; material and presencing; and tectonics and engagement, this thesis will develop a Town Hall and Square for St. Henry, Ohio through a process of reading regional particularities. As a result, the town hall typology will enhance a sense of place through architectural intervention, specifically, a “presencing,” (or foregrounding) of meanings and relationships already latent in the cultural and built environment. ii iii Thank you to all of my loved ones who have encouraged, supported, and put up with having to listen to me talk about architecture for hours on end. Market Square in Krakow is paradoxically at the same time a typical example of medieval marketplace and a unique site. But the frontline between what is common and what is unique can be seen as “somewhat fuzzy”. Among these examples readers should observe a number of unexpected similarities, as well as sharp contrasts in terms of form, usage and layout of buildings.

Eighty-one years later, a writer and a photographer took a road trip to visit the legacy of this accelerator-physics pioneer: American Big Science. 27 Every good cross-country road trip needs a theme. Sure, you can drive across the United States in three days flat, heading in a straight line on impersonal interstates and stopping at the occasional Waffle House for sustenance. But that doesn’t do justice to the great American tradition of the road trip, heading from sea to shining sea with the windows down and the radio on. From On the Road to Easy Rider, we’ve learned that the destination isn’t the point—it’s how you get there that counts. Pastore has been named Vice President of Development and Production, and Riegel joins as Vice President of Marketing and Communications. The announcement was made by joint venture President and CEO Tom Cosgrove. “Tim and Rod are strong leaders with extensive backgrounds in developing high-quality content and launching successful cable networks,” said Cosgrove. “Along with the other members of our management team, they will be instrumental in establishing the Sony-Discovery-IMAX 3D network as the leader in 3D television. It will provide consumers with the largest and most extensive library of original and exclusive 3D content available anywhere.” Pastore will be responsible for the commissioning, production and development of original content for the network, as well as serving as a key contributor to the network’s strategic planning, direction and operation. Since 2008, he served as Director of Production and Development at Discovery Channel, where he executive-produced numerous successful series including DIRTY JOBS, AMERICAN LOGGERS, SWAMP LOGGERS, OUT OF THE WILD: THE ALASKA EXPERIMENT, GHOST LAB, SWORDS: LIFE ON THE LINE and DUAL SURVIVAL. Before that, Pastore worked with Original Productions, where he was heavily involved in Discovery Channel’s hit series DEADLIEST CATCH, as well as other popular programs, and is a two-time Emmy Award nominee for his work on DIRTY JOBS and DEADLIEST CATCH.
