Ian Spooner First-Year Interim Head Coach Fifth Season at San Jacinto College Western Michigan (2005) After eight seasons at the helm of the San Jacinto College men’s soccer team, head coach Dr. David Santesteban received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) as one of nine technical advisors for the United States Men’s and Youth National Teams program. He has taken a one-year leave of absence from the College to focus on his efforts with the USSF.

In Santesteban’s absence, Ian Spooner, now in his fifth season with the San Jacinto College soccer team, will step up and take over as interim head coach. A former goalkeeper in college, Spooner has worked mainly with the San Jac keepers for the past four years, continuing the tradition of excellence of past San Jacinto College goalies.

Spooner spent the 2005-06 season as the assistant coach at Cumberland University of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He holds a United States Soccer Federation National “C” Coaching License. He has spent the last two and a half years working for the Challenge Soccer Club, and the previous four years as a professional staff coach for Space City Soccer Club.

Spooner hails from Houston, but played collegiately at Western Michigan from 2001-2005. As a keeper for the Broncos, he was named the Mid-American Conference player of the week in September of 2003. Spooner was the 2004 Western Michigan Most Valuable Player and the 2001 newcomer of the year. He helped the Broncos to the 2003 MAC championship and the 2004 MAC runner-up.

Spooner holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Western Michigan.
