Eric Taylor Head Coach Louisiana State University at Shreveport Overall: 11-48 (two seasons)

Eric Taylor enters his third season as head coach of the San Jacinto College women’s basketball team. Although still relatively new to the head coach position, Taylor is no stranger to the College or the team. Prior to being named the head coach, he served as a team consultant while in the role of physical education instructor and director of intramural sports. Last season, San Jac battled through numerous injuries, losing eight different players by the half-way mark, leaving Taylor with half of his original team of 15 to finish out the year. Despite a tough 6-23 overall record, 2-16 in conference play, Taylor felt there were some bright spots. Adanna Opara and Ashley Watson signed National Letters of Intent to play for Texas Pan American University, the team grade point average was 2.7, and all eight sophomores graduated from San Jacinto College. Opara and team MVP Kaylin Little both earned All-Conference honorable mention honors. Taylor assumed the role of head coach prior to the 2008-09 season, replacing Shawn Silman who stepped down after 12 seasons. As a rookie head coach, Taylor and San Jac finished 5-25 on the season. That year, Jasmyne Watson and Darshell Hatch were named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIV women’s basketball all- conference honorable mention team. “I love the game. That’s why I coach,” noted Taylor. “It’s an opportunity for student-athletes to get an education through the game of basketball, and I can share with them my past experiences and teach them how to get to the next level.” Taylor is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, where he attended Captain Shreve High School. He lettered three years on the basketball team and graduated with a 3.2 GPA. He went on to play at Holmes Community College in Goodman, Mississippi, where he averaged 11.7 points and six rebounds per game for the Bulldogs. He then transferred to the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he averaged 16 points and eight rebounds per game, and later played for Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Taylor’s coaching career includes a stint as an assistant coach at Southern University in Shreveport, where he also earned associate degrees in computer science and mathematics. He earned a bachelor of science in health and physical secondary education at Louisiana State University at Shreveport. Taylor played professionally in the Southwestern Basketball League in Dallas, and on the Pro-Am Circuit in the Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma region. “I’m excited to be the head coach at San Jacinto College,” added Taylor. “It is my belief that through hard work, commitment and dedication, we can reach the goals we’ve set for us here at San Jacinto College.” Taylor and his wife, Kimberly, have two children: Xavier, 19; and Kayla, 12.

The North houses the College’s baseball and women’s basketball teams, as well as the College debate team.

In addition to providing quality education, San Jacinto College North also serves as a convenient hub for its community, generally known as the North Channel area due to the proximity to the thriving Houston Ship Channel. Local service organizations and business groups often hold regular meetings at the North campus, including the North Shore Rotary Club, the North Channel Area Chamber of Commerce, San Jacinto Pilot Club, Wendell Ley Family YMCA, League of United Latin American Citizens, and Head Start.

The North Channel area is one of the most demographically diverse parts of Harris County, where vibrant mixes of people from various backgrounds live and work. Like the community, the North campus is a “melting pot” of students representing a variety of nationalities.

The economy of the North Channel area is also diverse, with a strong representation of small and medium businesses, petrochemical plants, maritime industries, warehouse and distribution centers, fabricating operations, and hospital, retail and service companies. To prepare students for the global marketplace, and to ensure companies have a well-trained work force, the North campus offers high quality academic instruction. In addition, fast-track training in a wide range of technical and health science programs is available. Programs range from diesel, automotive collision and welding technologies, to vocational nursing, engineering design graphics, culinary arts, and cosmetology.

San Jacinto College North has earned a well-deserved reputation for maintaining a tradition of academic excellence and high standards. Three of the College’s technical programs — information technology, real estate and paralegal — have earned the prestigious recognition of Exemplary Workforce Education Program rating by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Students at San Jacinto College North learn from master teachers and engage with a rich academic curriculum that prepares them to enter the diverse workforce and for transfer to four-year universities. To help students achieve their academic goals, the North campus Nichols Gymnasium enjoys rich collaboration with secondary schools of the North Channel community. Some of the many initiatives developed with local school districts include the Modified Early College Academy (MECA), dual credit, shared counselors, Scholars Academy, and Upward Bound Math and Science.

A notable collaboration between the North campus and local secondary schools is TRIO, three federally-funded programs that provide services and support for low-income households, and for students who will be the first in their families to graduate from college. The TRIO programs provide academic, career and financial counseling to participants and encourage them to graduate from high school and continue to earn postsecondary degrees.

Student-athletes in baseball and women’s basketball play competitively in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The women’s basketball team has advanced to the Region XIV playoffs three times since 2002, while the baseball team continues its tradition of excellence year after year, having made 21 overall appearances at the JUCO World Series, with a national runner up finish in 2010.

By serving as a meeting place for area organizations, providing high caliber education in academic and technical courses, celebrating a diverse and inclusive community, and by collaborating with local secondary schools, San Jacinto College’s North campus responds to the unique needs of the North Channel communities and helps to ensure the growing San Jacinto College community remains robust and thriving.
