Notes Introduction: Fairy Tale Films, Old Tales with a New Spin 1. In terms of terminology, ‘folk tales’ are the orally distributed narratives disseminated in ‘premodern’ times, and ‘fairy tales’ their literary equiva- lent, which often utilise related themes, albeit frequently altered. The term ‘ wonder tale’ was favoured by Vladimir Propp and used to encompass both forms. The general absence of any fairies has created something of a mis- nomer yet ‘fairy tale’ is so commonly used it is unlikely to be replaced. An element of magic is often involved, although not guaranteed, particularly in many cinematic treatments, as we shall see. 2. Each show explores fairy tale features from a contemporary perspective. In Grimm a modern-day detective attempts to solve crimes based on tales from the brothers Grimm (initially) while additionally exploring his mythical ancestry. Once Upon a Time follows another detective (a female bounty hunter in this case) who takes up residence in Storybrooke, a town populated with fairy tale characters and ruled by an evil Queen called Regina. The heroine seeks to reclaim her son from Regina and break the curse that prevents resi- dents realising who they truly are. Sleepy Hollow pushes the detective prem- ise to an absurd limit in resurrecting Ichabod Crane and having him work alongside a modern-day detective investigating cult activity in the area. (Its creators, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, made a name for themselves with Hercules – which treats mythical figures with similar irreverence – and also worked on Lost, which the series references). Beauty and the Beast is based on another cult series (Ron Koslow’s 1980s CBS series of the same name) in which a male/female duo work together to solve crimes, combining procedural fea- tures with mythical elements. -

They designate taboos, write out life scripts for ideal behaviors, and demonstrate the punishments for violating the collective and its prescribed social roles. Tales pass on key cultural and social histories all in a metaphoric language. In this course, we will examine a variety of classical and contemporary fairy and folktale texts from German and other European cultures, learn about approaches to folklore materials and fairy tale texts, and look at our own culture with a critical-historical perspective. We will highlight key issues, values, and anxieties of European (and U.S.) culture as they evolve from 1400 to the present. These aspects of human life include arranged marriage, infanticide, incest, economic struggles, boundaries between the animal and human, gender roles, and class antagonisms. Among the tales we will read and learn to analyze using various interpretive methods are tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, by the Italians Basile and Straparola, by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French writers such as D‘Aulnoy, de Beaumont, and Perrault, by Hans Christian Andersen and Oscar Wilde. We will also read 20th century re-workings of classical fairy tale motifs. The course is organized around clusters of Aarne, Thompson and Uther‘s ―tale types‖ such as the Cinderella, Bluebeard, and the Hansel-and-Gretel tales. -

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study It was amazing and amusing when in my childhood listen the fable story of Sang Kancil and its series (the mouse deer) as the most popular children stories in my childhood. This story firstly was undocumented and it was told orally from the parents to their children. Such the traditional story shows the traditional setting of culture, custom, and nature as well. The jungle, the river and the farm field characterizes the setting of story. While the crocodile, snail, tiger, elephant, farmer, and the mouse deer itself became the characters in the story. It firmly depicts the influence of culture and nature to the traditional children stories. Being Sang Kancil (the mouse deer) is the well - known story for children, mostly it was told every day before the children were slept by the parents. Consequently, the following day, the children discussion in the school will talk of the abundance of this story, discussing the smartness of the mouse deer, laughing at the elephant’s silliness, crocodile’s confusion, and tiger stupidity, chatting how could the mouse deer cheat them and so forth. The simple discussion of the children dealing with the story is always about the amusement, funny, and entertaining simple topics. Attending the children to listen the stories will emerge two kinds of possibilities, first they will be laughing and happy and perhaps secondly, they will yawn as the reaction of their boredom. It is the natural response and honest expression from the children from the entire world in acquainted with the interesting and uninteresting of the stories that they have heard. -

M 9-11, T 2-4 292-8308 [email protected] This course examines the history and uses of the fairy tale in the modern Western world. It argues that the fairy tale is a principal means by which subordinate actors (such as women, children, and the poor) come to terms with dominant cultural constructions of reality, especially those relating to family life and economic success. We‟ll look first at the oral wonder tale as the European peasant‟s guide to survival in a world where the rules are both imposed from above and unreliable. Next, we‟ll see how oral tales are converted to the familiar fairy tales of literature and film, in which they are used to teach a wide variety of norms of conduct: good manners, religious resignation, economic aggression, and consumerism. Finally, we‟ll explore how attacking and reshaping the fairy tale can be a means of questioning the larger culture. In all these transformations, fairy tales explore the tensions between three responses to the promises of modern society: playing the game to win, escaping it, and changing the rules. Our examples will be drawn primarily from late seventeenth-century France, early nineteenth century Germany, and Italy and the U.S. in the twentieth century. We‟ll also read excerpts from some of the best-known commentators on the fairy tale. -

The combination of listening to stories and reading books has helped my students do well on tests without output or grammar studies. Story- Listening is so powerful that students improve rapidly in listening comprehension and acquire many words. You can download them from any sites that have the collection of Great Grimm Brothers’ household tales. These stories are not just for children. They deal with many different themes that children may not understand yet, such as deception, loyalty, and true love. Thus, story-listening is not just for children, but for adults also. Story-Listening can be used for any age and also at any levels of proficiency. -

While most of us associate the fairy tale with magic and fantasy, here we consider the many ways in which fairy tales call us back to the "real" world. We'll see the fairy tale as a space through which subordinate actors (such as women, children, and poor people) negotiate dominant cultural constructions of reality, especially those relating to family life and economic success. We’ll look first at the oral wonder tale as the peasant’s guide to survival in a world where the rules are both imposed from above and unreliable. Next, we’ll see how oral tales are reworked in print and later media for diverse ideological and commercial purposes, creating prominent models of selfhood and success along the way. In turn, we’ll see that artistic appropriations of the fairy tale provide an opportunity to denaturalize, even break cultural scripts. In all these transformations, fairy tales explore the tension between three ways individuals can respond to the promise of modern society: playing the game to win, escaping it, and changing the rules. But what happens when the rules of the game are no longer clear or certain? In a group project we'll survey what has been happening lately to the fairy tale plot in popular culture. -

(Davis 23) Born in Hanau in the principality of Hesse-Kassel during the later part of the 18th century, the brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, were graduates of the University of Marburg. Originally referred to as Children's and Household Tales, the Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales are rich with imagination, triumph, valor, honor, and wonders of the supernatural. The tales are also dark with graphic depictions of torture, cannibalism, incest, cruelty, seduction, abandonment, and vindictiveness. In the preface to the first edition of the Children's and Household Tales, Wilhelm Grimm reflecting on the “universal truth” of the tales stated: The tales live on in such a way that no one thinks about whether they are good or bad, poetic or vulgar. We know them and we love them just because we happen to have heard them in a certain way, and we like them without reflecting why (205). At the turn of the 20th century, Grimm’s Children's and Household Tales had been part of the Prussian and German principalities teaching curriculum for over 30 years (Zipes, Introduction, xxxxiii). The first English translation of the Children's and Household Tales occurred in the late 1800s. In a 1993 compilation of the Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales (Grimm), published by Barnes and Nobels Books in collaboration with Doubleday Publishing House, there are 211 tales taken from the seventh edition (1857) of the Children's and Household Tales.
