  • Maria PAȘCALĂU,Moses Gaster Și Lazăr Șăineanu: Problema Dublei
MOSES GASTER ȘI LAZĂR ȘĂINEANU: PROBLEMA DUBLEI IDENTITĂȚI Maria PAȘCALĂU Universitatea de Vest din Timișoara [email protected] Moses Gaster and Lazăr Șăineanu: The Question of Double Identity In the 1880s, as a result of the acculturation process, a generation of elite Jewish intellectuals became active, who promoted the idea of Romanian Jewish identity and came to make significant contributions to Romanian science and culture. The present paper aims to study the question of double identity concerning the generation of Romania’s acculturated Jewish intellectuals in the late 19th century, by analyzing two representative cases: Moses Gaster, a moderate assimilationist with Jewish nationalist tendencies, and Lazăr Șăineanu, who came to adopt a radical form of assimilation by converting to Christianity. This research will be undertaken from an interdisciplinary approach that includes cultural, historical, and political perspectives. The question of double identity regarding the two Jewish intellectuals will be related to aspects of their biographical trajectory, with a focus on their personal and professional backgrounds, on the relationship with the Jewish community and religious life, on cultural and scientific concerns, as well as on integration issues. By following the personal and cultural destinies of the two Jewish intellectuals, this paper aims to emphasize the impact of their work on both Romanian and Jewish cultures and to reveal the main difficulties that the whole generation they represented had to face by assuming the Romanian Jewish identity: increase in anti-Semitism, hostile reactions coming from the cultural and political authorities, rejection of integration, the pressure of the Romanian culture with ethnic-national identity tendencies on their Jewish identity.

Storyline The Museum of the History of Romanian Jewry and the Holocaust Bucharest, Romania 1. Judaism and Christianity in Antiquity, Christianity’s Derivation from Judaism, the Old and New Testaments, the Exile of Jews in the Roman Empire 2. The beginnings of Jewish presence in the roman province of Dacia The oldest evidence of the presence of Jews on Romania's territory dates from the 1st to the 3rd centuries. Here are some epigraphic documents that refer to the presence of the Jews in Roman Dacia (the Roman province after Dacia was conquered by the Roman Empire, in 106): - Inscriptions of names of Jewish origin. - A stone ring having a Jewish inscription, discovered in Sarmisegetuza. - Objects inscribed with Jewish symbols. - The presence of eastern religions in Roman Dacia. - Dacia is known to have hosted military units brought from Palestine. Other testimonies: - The comparison made by Jewish historian Josephus Flavius (in his Jewish Antiquities) between the ascetic lifestyle of the Essenes in the Judean desert and that practiced by members of a religious sect in Dacia (the Pleistoi). - Apostle Andrew preached the Gospel in the land of the Scythes / Scythia (Eusebius of Caesarea, Historia Ecclesiastica). The general meaning of the name "Scythia" refers not only to the land in the northern and eastern parts of Pontus Euxinus (the Black Sea), but also to Scythia Minor, i.e. Dobrogea. Apostles focused on the Jews settled in different cities of the Roman Empire. - 133-134. A coin issued by Simon Bar Kochba, the leader of the independence movement of the Jews from the Roman Empire, during this period (132-135), was discovered in 1971 during the excavation works at the fort of Pojejena (near Orșova).

  • Gidni 542 Eminent Romanian Drama. a Biographical
Section – Literature GIDNI EMINENT ROMANIAN DRAMA. A BIOGRAPHICAL APPROACH Bogdan C. S. Pîrvu, MD, and Doina Cosman, MD, PhD, ”Iuliu Haţieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca Abstract: The biographical research that we ran on 25 eminent Romanian dramatists (scanning 140 years, from 1850 to 1990) comes up with a figure of 18 (72%) cases of psychopathology and invites the gruesome conclusion that psychopathology and (eminent dramatists’) creativity are intimately connected. Given that the 1991 Epidemiological Catchment Area survey (involving interviews at five different sites with about 20,000 individuals typifying the entire United States population) revealed a lifetime prevalence of 32% for any psychiatric disorder, we won’t fail to see that (eminent) drama makes a huge difference (smaller than eminent poetry, though – which goes up to 81.54% in our statistics), even if we allow for a certain degree of diagnostic uncertainty (partly caused by the change in age and continent). A similar 1995 study on American theater men gave fairly similar results (74%), hence we conclude – no irony intended – that this domain-specific genre might well be “global.” Keywords: Romanian drama; eminent dramatists; psychopathology; biopsychosocial approach; creativity Introduction When first put to the test of differentiating between poets and fiction writers, the literary personality already showed the first signs of an inner fracture (Post 1996). Fiction writers are significantly different from poets in terms of psychopathology as well, and psychopathology is ultimately the best symptom of internal combustions (Juda 1949; Martindale 1972; Andreasen 1987; Jamison 1989; Post 1994; Ludwig 1994; Cosman&Pîrvu 2013a). Dramatists are still further off, their creative process takes a sideline, as it were.

Valentin BODEA CULTURA ÎN ORAŞUL GALAŢI (1918 – 1948) CULTURAL LIFE OF THE TOWN OF GALAŢI (1918 – 1948) - Abstract - The article aims at a presentation of the cultural life of the town of Galați, between 1918 and 1948.
