In large numbers, they can be found in many 0 other countries of the world, mostly the United States of America. The Irish have a long history. Originally a specific Celtic people with a distinctive culture, for many centuries they were exposed to the cultures of numerous invaders, for many centuries they suffered oppression--most painfully under the English overrule. As Professor Falaky Nagy comments, the Irish are ”a people who, for centuries, have been told that their language, their culture, and their religion were worthless and that they should try to be more like the English” [Tay]. -

O romance pode ser visto, na perspectiva de hoje, como uma das primeiras tentativas de se implementar a poética de ficção autoconsciente e metaficção na literatura ocidental. Publicado na véspera da 2ª Guerra, o livro caiu no esquecimento até ser re-editado em 1960. A partir dessa data, At Swim-Two-Birds foi adquirindo uma reputação cult entre leitores e despertando o interesse crítico. Ao lançar mão do conceito mise en abyme de André Gide, o presente estudo procura mapear os textos dos quais At Swim-Two-Birds se apropria para refletí-los de forma distorcida dentro de sua própria narrativa. Estes textos vão desde narrativas míticas e históricas, passam pela poesia medieval e vão até os meados do século XX. Brian Ó Nualláin/O’Nolan Scholarly Background & Foreground* Breandán Ó Conaire St Patrick’s College, Dublin City University ‘Ní fhéadaim cuimhneamh ar aon scríbhneoir mór anois a bhféadfá fear léannta a thabhairt air’ (I cannot think of any major writer at present who could be called a man of learning). – Seán Ó Ríordáin 1 ‘Brian Ó Nualláin, afterwards alias Myles na gCopaleen, alias Flann O’Brien, and, as it turned out, the most gifted bilingual genius of half a century’ – Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, Irish President (1974–76)2 Family Background From his early years, Brian O’Nolan lived in a family environment in which education, literature, the Irish language, culture, and learning held significant importance. This milieu was reflected in the skills, talents, and accomplishments of members of the extended family. His paternal grandfather Daniel Nolan from Munster was a national teacher and taught music at the Model School in Omagh, Co. Tyrone. He was an excellent singer and an accomplished violinist. He had a special fondness for theatre and opera, performances of which he frequently attended with his young wife. A special concert was organised in his honour in Omagh prior to his transfer to Belfast in the early 1880s. In July 1867 Daniel married Jane Mellon3 a former pupil at the Omagh school and fourth daughter of James Mellon, a strong farmer from Eskeradooey in Co. Tyrone. The marriage took place at Knockmoyle Catholic Church in Cappagh parish where Jane was born. The parish priest, Rev. Charles McCauley, was the celebrant. In the national census entries for 1901 and for 1911, when Jane, also known as ‘Sinéad,’ lived with the O’Nolan family in Strabane, her competence in both Irish and English was recorded. -
New Speakers of Irish: Shifting Boundaries Across Time and Space
IJSL 2015; 231: 63 – 83 Open Access Bernadette O’Rourke* and John Walsh New speakers of Irish: shifting boundaries across time and space Abstract: While traditional Irish-speaking communities continue to decline, the number of second-language speakers outside of the Gaeltacht has increased. Of the more than one and half million speakers of Irish just over 66,000 now live in one of the officially designated Gaeltacht areas. While “new speakers” can be seen to play an important role in the future of the language, this role is sometimes undermined by discourses which idealise the notion of the traditional Gaeltacht speaker. Such discourses can be used to deny them “authenticity” as “real” or “legitimate” speakers, sometimes leading to struggles over language ownership. Concerns about linguistic purity are often voiced in both academic and public discourse, with the more hybridized forms of Irish developed amongst “new speakers” often criticised. This article looks at the extent to which such discourses are being internalised by new speakers of Irish and whether or not they are con- structing an identity as a distinct social and linguistic group based on what it means to be an Irish speaker in the twenty first century. These policies have had mixed levels of success.
