I explore a number of related questions concerning this legend: its development and dissemination throughout this geographi# area+ the meanings it conveys for its traditional audiences and performers, and its afterlife in contemporary media and literature4 The first chapter provides an overvie! of all the known versions of The Mermaid Legend, demographi# information about storytellers and colle#tors, its typi#al forms, and the motifs or subtypes whi#h are subje#t to geographi# variation. I argue that the legend originated in Ireland or Gaeli# S#otland and spread from Gaeli# S#otland to Shetland and Orkney, and from there to the rest of the Norse world. My se#ond chapter explores the relationship bet!een The Mermaid Legend and other Irish and S#ottish traditions about seals and mermaids4 I conclude that they represent a stable body of belief concerning s$#h beings+ and relate to broader concerns about the relationship bet!een humans and their environment. In my third chapter, I explore medie)al and early modern Irish literary depi#tions of seals and mermaids4 i) The fourth chapter explores the question of the possible functions and meanings of the legend, at both the colle#tive and individual le)el. I in#lude t!o individual case studies of versions of the legend re#orded from storytellers with large repetoires and s$"fi#ient biographi#al information: Éamonn a Búrc of Carna+ County Gal!ay, and Peig Sayers of Dún Chaoin, County ;erry. In the fi"th and final chapter, I explore a number of films and literary works by Irish #reators whi#h retell or dra! inspiration from this legend. This was true in Colonsay and there were almost a dozen areas in Scotland where the clansman and his children regard one of these as 'home'. The writer has tried to define the nature of these homes, and to study their growth. It will take some years to organize comparative material and we have indicated in Chapter III the areas which should require research. In Chapter IV the writer has prepared a list of possible chiefs of the clan over a thousand years. The books on our Clan give very little information on these chiefs but the writer has recorded some probable comments on his chiefship.

    The Origins and Expansion of the O’Shea Clan At the beginning of the second millennium in the High Kingship of Brian Boru, there were three distinct races or petty kingdoms in what is now the County of Kerry. In the north along the Shannon estuary lived the most ancient of these known as the Ciarraige, reputed to be descendants of the Picts, who may have preceded the first Celts to settle in Ireland. On either side of Dingle Bay and inland eastwards lived the Corcu Duibne1 descended from possibly the first wave of Celtic immigration called the Fir Bolg and also referred to as Iverni or Erainn. The common explanation of Fir Bolg is ‘Bag Men’ so called as they allegedly exported Irish earth in bags to spread around Greek cities as protection against snakes! However as bolg in Irish means stomach, generations of Irish school children referred to them gleefully as ‘Fat bellies’ or worse. Legend has it that these Fir Bolg, as we will see possibly the ancestors of the O’Shea clan, landed in Cork. Reputedly small, dark and boorish they settled in Cork and Kerry and were the authors of the great Red Branch group of sagas and the builders of great stone fortresses around the seacoasts of Kerry. Finally around Killarney and south of it lived the Eoganacht Locha Lein, descendants of a later Celtic visitation called Goidels or Gaels. Oct. 2021 Flann Mainistrech's Götterdämmerung as a Junction within Lebor 1 Gabála Érenn INTRODUCTION Lebor Gabála Érenn: Content Lebor Gabála Érenn (‘the Book of the Invasion of Ireland’) is the conventional title for a lengthy Irish pseudo-historical text extant in multiple recensions probably compiled during the eleventh and twelfth centuries.2 The text comprises a history of the Gaídil (‘Gaels’) within the context of a universal history derived from the Bible and from Classical historiography.3 Lebor Gabála traces the ancestry of the Gaídil back to Noah and follows their tortuous migrations, spanning many generations, from the Tower of Babel to Ireland via Spain.

The longer of these versions, to which, on account of its literary merits, I have assigned the chief place, is taken from the huge vellum codex known as the Leahhar Breac, or Speckled Book, now preserved in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, by which it was published in fac- simile in 1876. This MS. was compiled from various sources in the fourteenth century. It is noteworthy that, with the exception of the Vision and a version of the mediteval legend of Alexander, the contents of this MS. are almost wholly ecclesiastical and religious. The second shorter version, printed infra, pp. 114-129, and translated on pp. 148-155, is taken from a paper MS. of the end of the sixteenth century, preserved in the library of Trinity College, Dublin, where it is classed H. 3. 18 (pp. 732-742). In printing the text, I have added a punctuation of my own. I have separated words according to the method followed by Windisch and Stokes. I have ex- tended contractions, using italics in all cases where there could be the smallest doubt as to the correctness of such extensions.

As you will see, the articles appearing in the booklet are of particular interest to people of the names MacEgan, Egan, Eagan and Keegan. Because the MacEgans were a family interested in their family history and genealogy from the earliest times, it is not surprising that the formation of our Clan Association has evoked such interest amongst our kith and kin at home and abroad.

It shows a tension between reality and fantasy ’which seem to me to be usually an irresolvable dichotomy. The stories set themselves in pre-history. It presents these texts as a “window on the iron age”2. The writers may have been Christians distancing themselves from past heathen ways. This backward glance maybe taken from the literature tradition in Latin transferred from the continent and read by Irish scholars. Where the authors “undertake to inform the audience concerning the pagan past, characterizing it as remote, alien and deluded”3 or were they diligent scholars trying to preserve the past. This question is still debateable. The stories manage to be set in both the past and the present, both historical Ireland with astonishingly accuracy and the mythical otherworld.

Indeed, the first decision confronting anyone who wishes to consider this subject is to define its geographical limits: the modern county of Meath is quite a different entity to the medieval kingdom of Mide from which it gets its name and which itself designated different areas at different times. It would be quite defensible to include in a survey of medieval literature those areas which are now under the administration of other modern counties, but which may have been part of the medieval kingdom at the time that that literature was produced.
