6 | Kenmare News I feel that the No vote delivered by the people of Ireland brings into focus the need for real and meaningful reform of not just the Seanad but the Dáil as well. “Government sclaims that their promise of a democratic revolution is on-going was rejected by the people who saw the referendum for what is was, a cynical power grab aimed at concentrating more power in the hands of a few Ministers. Senator “The Government cannot afford to bury their heads in the sand and leave the Seanad as it is. The No vote on Friday October 4th was a vote for reform and the Taoiseach now has a duty to engage with all parties and civil society in a serious discussion about real reform of the Oireachtas. Working with a CommunityBy Eileen O’Leary

It has been my privilege to work with the community in the parish of since 2003, it has been a ten year journey that holds many wonderful memories for me. The story began with a photographic course that I facilitated in Dawros Community Centre for a group of twelve women who wanted to master the skills of photography and document their families and friends. The result of their work was an exhibition in the Lake House Hotel; the success of this was followed in 2004 with the publication of A Journey Through Tuosist, a 216 page book of colour photographs. I remember the day in 2005 that my student Mary O’Leary, local photographer and documentary film maker, took me to meet Liam Óg O’Shea, the blacksmith in Lauragh, so that I could photograph Liam in action in his forge. At the moment when I pressed the shutter on my camera I knew that we should consider a social history of the area that would include and celebrate the lives of men like Sean Óg. The social history project began in 2011 and involved; a voluntary committee, over 160 people who contributed articles from Ireland and America and more than 50 people who were interviewed on film recalling their lives in Tuosist. The book, film and original map was • We protect your home • launched in Kenmare in June of this year. If you have a garden, no matter what size, there is such a lot to be done at this time of the year to get it ‘closed down’ for winter. To help us all consider these somewhat tedious jobs, the Club spent an enjoyable evening on Thursday 3rd October listening to Peter Harrison talking about the Autumn garden and Autumn chores. His list was somewhat daunting but a lot of it is work that one gets o n with as one goes along such as raking up leaves to make leaf mould, weeding, cutting grass and tidying edges, deadheading and cutting back flowering shrubs etc. The main thing is to plan ahead and decide what you want to achieve in your garden. You can start preparing new beds now and even planting so that the root system is established before the worst of the winter, ready to burst into new growth in Spring. His advice was that the secret of The Blackwater Group who recently went on a bus trip with Declan gardening is to tame rather than dominate but I would say that after the Finnegan, the singing bus driver, to the Scellig Ring, Portamaee & rain and then heat this year, it is ourselves who are being dominated by nature….. the growth has been phenomenal! Quite remarkable for a fairly new club which was set up from scratch in 2010, with no previous bowling experience. Mo Glover and Aiden McCabe were the two players who made it to the superb final in which their bowling was evenly matched for all seven ends. After an 'edge of the seat' Tie Breaker Mo Glover was the victor with Aiden as runner up. Congratulations to both of them. The photographs show Mo and Aiden being presented with their trophies and certificates by Maeve Arnold, Brian's widow, who generously donated the trophies to the club. Neidin Bowls club meets every Monday & Thursday 10.45am - 1pm at the GAA Sports Complex in Kenmare. Newcomers (experienced or beginners) are all welcome to join in with our friendly, enjoyable activity. Page 32:Layout 1 14/10/13 5:19 PM Page 1

Mike Maybury Cup. OnOctober 5th at Fr Breen pPark in glorious sunshine the annual Mike Maybury Memorial Cup was played between the U10 footballers from Kenmare, , Rathmore, and Clondrohid. The Shield was made up of teams from Kenmare, Clondrohid and Glenflesk. After a series of very exciting tight games, Kenmare and Glenflesk ended up in the Cup final and Kenmare and Clondrohid did battle in the shield final. Kenmare came out on top after two very ex citing ,hard-fought finals. Mary O'Connor presented the Mike Maybury cup to captain Tom Quinlan and the shield to joint captains Dylan Wallace and Padraig Foley. Special thanks to referees Patrick O'Dwyer, John Daly and Garry McCarthy who did an excellent job on the day. Thanks to the Kenmare mentors who ran a very successful event. Thanks to all the parents who assisted in providing refreshments and finally thanks to the players who took part. We started slowly but a good save by David O’Sullivan seemed to wake us up and we had a very good mid section with Ger Morgan, Ger Murphy and Alan O’Sullivan nicking points to put us 0-4 to 0-3 to the good on 23 Club Draw. The Club Draw was held last Monday and the winners drawn were Mike Price €650; Sean O’Regan €250 and Conor McSwiney €100. minutes. ’s tricky full-forward landed two points late in the half but Ger Murphy showed his marker a clean pair of heels and pointed and James Junior Hurling Championship Semi Final Kenmare 3-14 Duagh 2-8 Duncan added a free (he went for goal, aiming high from 20m and it was To be honest, this game looked like it was gone from us. A dark, damp day tipped over) and we went in 0-6 to 0-5 ahead. in Duagh and their two goal salvo mid way through the second half We started where we had left off in the second half, Duncan pointing a seemed to have given them the win. They led by a point with five minutes free and after a great save from an Alan O’Leary shot the ‘keeper cleared to go and we didn’t equalise until the 57th minute – through a Ger Murphy to midfield where James Duncan caught and sent a high ball into the point. Then we just took over! We scored 2-3 in four minutes to run out square where John Maye got a touch (I think at any rate, one of those eight point winners. machines they use in the cricket to detect faint clips would be handy). It was a great boost but within a minute Duagh had their first goal to keep them in it - 1-7 to 1-5 to Kenmare. Jame s Duncan was again accurate and when Colm Dan caught a high one he quickly transferred to Ger Murphy for another fine point. Then the game turned again, Duagh hit 1-2 in a four minute spell to go one point ahead as the time began to tick down. Our defence was working over-time hooking and blocking to keep us in the game as Duagh seemed to be looking for another goal to make sure of the game. That effort paid off as with three minutes left Ger Murphy equalised. On 59 minutes Patrick Palmer sent in a lovely ball and two Kenmare forwards put hurley’s up for it and the ball ended up in the back of the net (Hot-Spot needed again! all claims to the Cathaoirleach please!). James Duncan hit another two with time up, before Alan O’Leary pick- pocketed a Duagh defender and raced in on goal, slamming the ball low and hard to the net. It was an amazing finish to what had been a tight game and when the Daugh ‘keeper tried to launch one last long one it was O’Leary’s lámh that grabbed it and he stroked over the last score of the game. The final will be against St. Pat’s with a time and venue yet to be announced. Kenmare: David O’Sullivan; Jamie Cooper, Mike Delaney, Conor Daly; Ritchie Reidy, Jimmy Healy, Eoin O’Sullivan; Alan O’Leary (1-2), James Duncan (0-7, 0-6fs); Colm O’Sullivan, Ger Murphy (0-4), Patrick Palmer (1-0); Ger Morgan (0-1), John Maye (1-0), Paudie Hanley.
