DearLetters Sir, to the Editor.... Thank you! Organising a street collection in aid of the Irish Wheelchair Association, I was given the date of the 24th of June in Kenmare. Off we went, my helpers and I, with our collection buckets out into the streets of Kenmare on what must have been the wettest day of 2011 so far. I am talking torrential with a driving cold wind! I understood the meaning of ‘Flag Day’. Only for some shop keepers taking pity on us all we would have collected that day would have been buckets of water. So in the name of all the helpers that day I like to give a big Thank you to Andrea, Robert and their lovely staff at Whyte's Centra, to the Management and nice staff of Murphy's SuperValu for allowing Michael O'Sullivan Chairman of Kenmare Mart presents us to collect within their premises, and to John from the Post Office for Joanne Murphy Kilgarvan and her son Patie with the the offer and loan of an umbrella! trophies for their Supreme Champion a Belgiam Blue Bull at Many thanks also to everyone who donated and made it 'our day' the August Show & Sale at Kenmare Mart. There was a great buzz around town, with people interested to get a glimpse of the new-look bar. It was touch and go as to whether it would be ready to meet the opening deadline, but with one minute to go the last detail was put in place and the doors opened on time at 7pm. People slowly trickled in and by 10 o’clock, the place was rocking. The Bar had been closed for some time and so was in need of some refurbishment, repairs and decoration. Not to mention furniture, glasses and drink! With the keys to the bar only being taken over on the Bank Holiday Monday, the team effectively had just 4 days to complete the job. It was an incredible undertaking and a lot of people worked very hard – some through the night – to ensure the Bar was ready for the opening evening. For anyone who has already visited the new Ryan’s Bar, we hope you will agree that the decor and furniture give the place a comfortable and stylish ambience. If you haven’t yet visited, call in and see what you think. Ryan’s Bar is open from 5pm daily and offers cocktails, fine wines and speciality coffees, together with regular live music and great promotions. Some of these include Cocktail evenings, 10% discount evenings and unique Club evenings. The Vibe Nightclub will be re- opening shortly and will be for Over 21s only. Completely refurbished and up-dated, this will add a new perspective to Kenmare’s infamous nightlife. Available for private party bookings. Hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of illnesses as it helps to decrease the number of germs that can be spread. Help your children to stay healthy by encouraging them to wash their hands properly and frequently. Hands need to be washed before touching and preparing food, eating or feeding or wound treatment. It is important to wash your hands after: sneezing and coughing, visiting the bathroom, and contact with body fluids like blood, saliva and vomit. Children have a lot of physical contact which is an excellent way for infection to spread. Children should always be reminded to wash their hands after playing outside. The best way to wash hands is to use running water. Wet the hands and put soap on it, preferably liquid soap. In pharmacies a variety of soaps are available, with or without perfume or extra bacterial killing power. Rub the hands over each other for several seconds and make sure the water and soap are spread over the entire hand surface. As a result of the new proposal by the Government I requested an assurance from the Minster for Health that there will be no downgrading that farmers will have to apply for planning permission to open drains and provide an of Bantry Hospital. environmental impact statement when carrying out other types of reclamation works I asked the Minister for Health to ensure that all cancer sufferers automatically receive and because of the fact that this will have such a detrimental effect on our farming a medical card regardless of their personal circumstances. community, and indeed on people who engage in agricultural contracting to do this I asked the Minister for Finance to do the necessary signing off to enable the work, I am putting forward a proposed amendment to increase the area of ground Department of Health to proceed with the community hospital for Kenmare. involved to a minimum of 6 acres. I put forward a question with regard to child protection in Ireland. Why are social At least this would allow a farmer, each year over a period of time, to carry out works workers being let go when their contracts expire. This is leaving children vulnerable as may be required in the interest of making their farms more viable and obtaining the and causing a backlog of cases. maximum amount of grass from their lands. I believe this to be a matter of major Why has funding for the Asthma Society of Ireland been cut by 30%. This will curtail importance and I am treating it very seriously as if the legislation is allowed to go the vital services the society provides to patients and to the HSE. through the Houses of the Oireachtas without being questioned it will drive a further What provisions can be put in place to ensure safe secure places for people over 18 nail into the coffin of rural Ireland. who are suffering from various different forms of mental illness. Caherciveen Community Hospital. I wish to condemn in the strongest possible way Hedge Cutting. I welcome the fact that in the Killorglin Engineering Area all the proposal in phase 1 by the HSE of downgrading the ambulance service from junctions will have their hedges cut starting in early August. The work will commence Caherciveen Community Hospital. Caherciveen has currently an ambulance cover in the Milltown area and carry on from there. This is most welcome as I have always 24/7. The day time shift, from 8am to 8pm, has a crew of two paramedics. At week- campaigned that the council should actually cut all hedges on all public roads. ends - Friday, Saturday, Sunday - there is a crew of two paramedics for the night time Unfortunately the management of the council do not agree with this view but at least it shift from 8pm to 8am, Monday-Thursday a crew of two paramedics cover on call will be a help to have the junctions cut and made safe from 8pm to 8am from home. There are currently discussions between the HSE School Books. I raised in the Dail on Wednesday 14th July the exorbitant cost of Ambulance Management, SIPTU and the Labour Court to abolish on call based on school books and the fact that Educate.ie, who operate in and give local health and safety issues. From this proposal Caherciveen base is the only one in Kerry jobs as they also print in Castleisland, are able to print school books at a massive not to have 24 hour cover. The new proposal was based on the following criteria - the reduction of 70% on what parents were already paying. I want to break up the existing service structure particular to the individual area i.e geographical spread, monopoly that has been operating in the past where 3 publishers were purposely actual levels of activity, availability of resources and location of stations. keeping the cost of school books enormously high and were actually getting printers I honestly believe that if South Kerry is left with full cover of an ambulance with two outside of Ireland to do the printing work. I fully support Educate.ie as it is a local paramedics only during the day shift, from 8am to 8pm, and the night shift, which business, keeping jobs locally and offering a quality product at a massively reduced would be covered by one paramedic in a response car, it could lead to a situation where price. people will die or be left seriously injured waiting for proper treatment. This is a Reduction in the Fuel Allowance and Free Electricity/Gas Schemes terrible situation to leave the people of South Kerry in and I condemn it in the In a particularly mean and vindictive political act the Minister for Social Protection strongest possible way. I will do everything that I can to ensure that our ambulance Joan Burton has announced 65 million in annual cuts to the fuel allowance and free service out of Caherciveen will not be downgraded, as is proposed. electricity/gas schemes. The fuel allowance has been cut to a standardized €20 per School Transport. I have raised with both the Minister for Transport and the Minister week, a cut of €3.90 per week, and there is to be a 25% cut in the free electricity/gas for Education the fact that the post primary and primary school bus service is being allowance from 2,400 units to 1,800 units annually i.e from 400 to 300 units per two removed from the Lauragh area. This will make it very difficult for parents and pupils month billing period. There is also to be a cut in free telephone but Eircom is to make arrangements to travel to and from school. I have publicly stated in the past absorbing the cost for their customers. that one of the most important things that we can do during this current economic crisis Those mainly affected will be old age pensioners, disabled persons and widows. The is to continue to educate our young people to their full potential. Unfortunately the cuts take effect as of September 1st. Considering the extremely harsh winters that we Government is not recognising this fact and is ignoring the pleas of the public have been enduring I believe this to be a savage attack on our elderly and vulnerable. I representatives, the principals, the teachers, parents and indeed the students raised this matter in the Dail on Thursday 14th July and I would consider it a themselves. Glenbeigh is also affected in the same way as Lauragh and what is disgraceful Ministerial decision by Joan Burton and calling her the Minister for Social happening is nothing short of an outrage. Protection is actually a joke, considering that this act will really hurt people this 15th August in Kenmare. I want to thank most sincerely the Kerry County Council staff who did trojan work in ensuring that the 15th August, despite the bad weather, was carried off for successfully. They did everything possible to ensure that refuse etc was gathered up in double quick time to bring the town back to pristine condition by the following day. On behalf of the people of Kenmare and the surrounding areas I thank them very much for their efforts. It was unfortunate that the weather was so bad on the day but people still enjoyed themselves and it is good that the tradition of a fair day on the 15th August is alive and well and will continue into the years ahead. Retirements. On my own behalf and on behalf of Kilgarvan Post Office I want to wish Agnes Purcell and Dan Healy every good wish for a long and healthy retirement from their jobs in An Post. He can no longer walk long distances (250- 300 yards is his limit) and suffers from loss of balance and coordination, muscle spasms, weakness, heat intolerance and extreme fatigue. Currently, there is no cure for Multiple Sclerosis, only medications that can alleviate or possibly slow down its progression. In June of this year, Brendan’s neurologist told him that the drug he was taking was not working. But there is hope. In 2008, an Italian surgeon and researcher, Oscars Bar & Bistro Paolo Zamboni discovered that a majority of MS sufferers have a narrowing of the veins that drain the central nervous system, at Sheen Falls Lodge causing toxic substances to leak into the brain. He found that by unblocking these veins, using a technique called the ‘Liberation Treatment,’ MS symptoms were stabilized or greatly improved. Peugeot has released details of the new Peugeot 508 RXH, an exclusive new all-road diesel- electric hybrid which will receive its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September. Since the launch of the new 508 saloon and SW this spring, the new range has been applauded by journalists and customers alike for its styling elegance and its build-quality. The 508 RXH now further raises the profile of the Peugeot brand and reinforces its technological and environmental lead. The 508 RXH is equipped with Peugeot's new 2.0 l HDi FAP HYbrid4 drive train, a world first when it features in the 3008 Hybrid4 later this year. This diesel-electric hybrid drive unit offers a maximum power of 200 bhp, four-wheel drive capabilities and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. A zero-emissions-vehicle (ZEV), the 100% electric mode kicks in to start the vehicle and when driving in town. Once the diesel engine comes alive, the RXH boasts consumption figures of 4.2 l/100 km (combined cycle), with emissions as low as 109g/km of CO2. The 508 RXH's posture and design immediately place it in the world of luxury all-wheel drive vehicles. Higher and wider than the 508 SW, the RXH sports the same distinctive floating grille as the saloon and SW with added LED lights on each side, visible both at day and night, giving an impression of three vertical 'lions' claws. To reinforce its exclusive character, the 508 RXH benefits from a premium quality interior and upholstery. Richly equipped, standard features include Open & Go keyless entry, electric front seats, head up display, 18" wheels, panoramic glass roof, dark-tinted acoustic laminated side windows, latest generation audio and satellite navigation unit. Following the launch of the 3008 HYbrid4 later this year and the launch of the 508 RXH in spring 2012 the Peugeot Marque will extend HYbrid4 diesel hybrid technology to other models.
