CONTENTS. PREFACE. The famous Irish tale known as "The Vision of Mac- Conglinne" is now for the first time printed in the different versions which have come down to us. The longer of these versions, to which, on account of its literary merits, I have assigned the chief place, is taken from the huge vellum codex known as the Leahhar Breac, or Speckled Book, now preserved in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, by which it was published in fac- simile in 1876. This MS. was compiled from various sources in the fourteenth century. It is noteworthy that, with the exception of the Vision and a version of the mediteval legend of Alexander, the contents of this MS. are almost wholly ecclesiastical and religious. The second shorter version, printed infra, pp. 114-129, and translated on pp. 148-155, is taken from a paper MS. of the end of the sixteenth century, preserved in the library of Trinity College, Dublin, where it is classed H. 3. 18 (pp. 732-742). In printing the text, I have added a punctuation of my own. I have separated words according to the method followed by Windisch and Stokes. I have ex- tended contractions, using italics in all cases where there could be the smallest doubt as to the correctness of such extensions. -

MYTHS, LEGENDS AND FOLKLORE And who am I to jeer at life-giving illusions? (J.M. Coetzee: Waiting for the Barbarians: 1982 : 143) Yeats had explored the depths of Irish myths, legends and folklore in his verse. This excursion into that other realm has been envisaged as an aid to the poet's attempt to transcend the bounds of reality. On the contrary, it may be argued that the poet used them consciously in order to root his poetry in the native soil. As a part of the Celtic Renaissance, Yeats harnessed the traditional sources to bring about a unity of the past and the present of Ireland. Through this fusion of the two, the poet suggested that national resources can enrich individual art. Two ideas, which ultimately converge, constitute the soul or the spiritual principle which one may consider as the exigency of a nation. One lies in the past, and the other one in the present. One is the possession, in common, of a rich legacy of memories, the other is the present day consent, the desire to live together, the will to perpetuate the value of the heritage that one has received in an undivided form. The nation, like the individual, is the culmination of a long past of endeavours, sacrifice and devotion. Ernest Renan's belief that of the cults, that of the ancestors is the most legitimate, for the ancestors have made men what they are, finds an echo in Yeats. A heroic past, grand men, their extraordinary feats, glorious achievements and ancillary splendour may be considered as the social 39 capital upon which one establishes a national idea. -

CELTIC TRAVELER: AN ONLINE MAGAZINE Stephen Jendraszak May 6, 2005 Thesis Advisor: Dr. Lauren Onkey CELTIC TRAVELER: AN ONLINE MAGAZINE Stephen Jendraszak May 6,2005 Thesis Advisor: Dr. Lauren Onkey !~~ ABSTRACT Celtic Traveler is an online magazine targeting Americans who are interested in Celtic and Early Christian travel and history, particularly in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. The "proof of conceptll issue I produced is for for March 2005. Because of St. Patrick's Day, March is the magazine's annual issue that focuses on Ireland exclusively. The site includes a cover, contents page, editor's note, letters to the editor page, three "destination" travel articles, a how-to article, a book review, and a review of a travel gadget. Each article has text, of course, but many have photos, explanatory graphics, videos, or audio content as well. The site is built as though a subscription is required to access content, but of course, that is not the case for this IIproof of concept" issue. I created this site as my individual project for a seminar at the Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry. The class spent two weeks doing research in Ireland and created a 10-part radio documentary that aired on Indiana Public Radio. MEMORABLE BARBARITIES AND NATIONAL MYTHS: ANCIENT GREEK TRAGEDY AND IRISH EPIC IN MODERN IRISH THEATRE A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Katherine Anne Hennessey, B.A., M.A. ____________________________ Dr. Susan Cannon Harris, Director Graduate Program in English Notre Dame, Indiana March 2008 MEMORABLE BARBARITIES AND NATIONAL MYTHS: ANCIENT GREEK TRAGEDY AND IRISH EPIC IN MODERN IRISH THEATRE Abstract by Katherine Anne Hennessey Over the course of the 20th century, Irish playwrights penned scores of adaptations of Greek tragedy and Irish epic, and this theatrical phenomenon continues to flourish in the 21st century. My dissertation examines the performance history of such adaptations at Dublin’s two flagship theatres: the Abbey, founded in 1904 by W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, and the Gate, established in 1928 by Micheál Mac Liammóir and Hilton Edwards. I argue that the potent rivalry between these two theatres is most acutely manifest in their production of these plays, and that in fact these adaptations of ancient literature constitute a “disputed territory” upon which each theatre stakes a claim of artistic and aesthetic preeminence. Partially because of its long-standing claim to the title of Ireland’s “National Theatre,” the Abbey has been the subject of the preponderance of scholarly criticism about the history of Irish theatre, while the Gate has received comparatively scarce academic attention. I contend, however, that the history of the Abbey--and of modern Irish theatre as a whole--cannot be properly understood except in relation to the strikingly different aesthetics practiced at the Gate. -

From the Graeco–Roman Underworld to the Celtic Otherworld: The Cultural Translation of a Pagan Deity angana moitra edieval narratives and literary texts are outfitted with text- worlds inhabited by figures who are as diverse and complex as Mthey are numerous in number. Although many of these figures represent unique artistic creations, some constitute prototypes with echoes in other literary and textual cultures. Although the narrative trajectories of medieval texts demarcate intended (or unintended) destinations for its cast of characters, it is important to note that the mere act of appearance within the narrative text-world is itself the destination for many of these figures, a destination that is often reached via a circuitous cultural pere- grination. As reflections of cultural attitudes which are dynamic, protean, and in a state of constant flux, literary figures are effervescent and contin- uously adapting to contextual specificities. But although discrete literary cultures have their own defining and unique characteristics, they do not exist in a vacuum, hermetically sealed off from developments in religious, political, and sociocultural life. On the contrary, textual cultures and lit- erary figures often demonstrate patterns of continuity (albeit in different forms) as the cultural systems of which they are a part interact with each other. Although such intercultural communication is typically viewed as a necessary by-product of an increasingly globalised world, it is not an invention of the modern age. Medieval cultures have all too frequently been negatively viewed as insular, monolithic systems frozen in time as fossilised blocs, which constitutes a reductive and totalising approach that overlooks how the social, political, literary, and religious systems of the Middle Ages actively mingled with each other in many contexts.
