Stampa: Giservice s.r.l .- Teramo, novembre 2008 PRESENTAZIONE Mentre stringiamo tra le mani Il Saggio della Prosodia latina di Francesco Antonio Marcucci e ne percepiamo l’odore di freschezza e di novità, torno con la mente ad una calda giornata di giugno. Facevo assistenza agli studenti del V anno, alle prese con il compito di Italiano, presso il Liceo della Comu- nicazion e Paritario, Maria Tecla Relucenti di Ascoli Piceno, quando il Presi- dente della commissione esaminatrice, Prof. Franco Zenobi, mi chiama. - E’ da tempo che desidero vedere l’antica Biblioteca Marcucci e il fondo dei suoi Manoscritti - disse - possiamo concordare una visita alla casa madre dell’Istituto? Stupita ed onorata per la domanda, risposi di sì. Da lì a poco iniziava per il prof. Zenobi un incantesimo! Chiese di poter trascrivere Il Saggio della Prosodia latina e di affiancarci i brani antologici usati dall’Autore per far esercitare le sue allieve all’uso della metrica latina, in traduzione italiana. E’ stato un iter appassionato, laboriosissimo e di grande onestà intellettuale e scientifica. Il prof. Zenobi si è avvicinato a mons. Marcucci in punta di piedi e con e- stremo interesse, come un padre che contempla il suo neonato nel sonno e, da ogni più lieve movimento, immagina come sarà da grande. Ha letto molte opere del suo Autore e tutto ciò che su di Lui è stato scritto. Ha sfogliato e risfogliato tutti i libri della sua Biblioteca e quelli donati ai Canonici della cattedrale della città. Si è posto tante domande, in particolare si è chiesto quali fonti avesse usato il Nostro per redigere Il Saggio della Prosodia latina e le rispettive Antologie ; quale influsso abbiano avuto sulla sua formazione iniziale le grandi Scuole degli Ordini religiosi presenti in città e il Seminario stesso e in quale misura questi insegnamenti si fossero coniugati con il suo impegno di autodidatta. Molte domande hanno trovato una risposta soddisfa- cente, altre rimangono aperte ad ulteriori ricerche. Qualcuno potrebbe chiedersi il perché di tanto impegno per pubblicare un’opera che ha ormai fatto il suo tempo. La risposta è che Il Saggio della Prosodia latina, oltre ad essere espressione della migliore cultura ascolana del tempo, secondo il giudizio di vari esperti, ha una straordinaria attualità ed ha un significato esemplare e metodologico di grande rilievo educativo. Mons. Marcucci è così rigoroso nell’insegnamento della metrica latina per- ché sa che questo è lo strumento per leggere e comprendere la cultura del tempo, in primo luogo la sacra Scrittura e gli Inni sacri della Liturgia, e- spressi in forma poetica. 9 La sua preoccupazione è la formazione della mente, consapevole che ad essa sono legati i sentimenti e le decisioni dell’uomo 1. Egli ricono- sce alla poesia e alla preghiera, espressa in forma poetica, una grande importanza nel processo formativo della mente umana, specialmente della donna. Il Saggio della Prosodia latina è stato, infatti, il testo base usato nella scuola femminile marcucciana per più di cento anni, fino alle disposi- zioni legislative emanate dal Governo italico. Mons. Marcucci usa spesso, nella sua predicazione, poesie, preghiere ed innni 2. Anche quando parla di Maria SS.ma, egli, come nota il grande mariologo p. Stefano de Fiores, “non disdegna le composizioni poetiche e drammatiche” 3. Siamo molto grati al professor Franco Zenobi che ci permette di aprire un altro “scrigno” del Servo di Dio mons. Francesco Antonio Marcuc- ci. Uno scrigno che mette in luce la sua alta cultura umanistica e clas- sica coniugata con una fede sincera e profonda, testimoniata e tra- smessa con ogni mezzo alle nuove generazioni. L’augurio delle Pie Operaie dell’Immacolata Concezione, che conti- nuano con trepidazione l’opera educativa iniziata dal loro Fondatore e Maestro, è che il Saggio della Prosodia latina costituisca per il mondo scolastico odierno e per l’intera società un arricchimento e uno sprone. Si può senz’altro affermare che ormai la ricerca biografica 1 su Francesco Antonio Marcucci abbia raggiunto i migliori risultati. In epoca recente alla sua figura sono stati dedicati convegni e incontri con l’intento di illustrarne la personalità e l’opera 2. 1 Tra le opere biografiche resta ancora fondamentale quella di ARCANGELO ROSSI -BRUNORI , La vita e la Istituzione di M. Marcucci , Ascoli Piceno 1917, pubblicata in occasione del se- condo centenario della nascita di Monsignore. Anteriori all’opera del Rossi-Brunori sono il Succinto Ragguaglio della Vita, Virtù, e Morte preziosa di Monsignor Francesco Antonio Marcucci di MARIA BEATRICE CAPOZI , e Antonio Marcucci di FRANCESCO SAVERIO CASTIGLIONI . La Capozi, superiora delle Pie Operaie dal 1793 al 1807, era presente agli ul- timi istanti del Fondatore. Il Ragguaglio , scritto subito dopo la morte del Servo di Dio, è stato pubblicato nel 1998 sul n. 3, anno XXVIII, pp. 7-24, di “Luci di Maria”, periodico del- le Pie Operaie. Il Castiglioni, divenuto papa con il nome di Pio VIII, era succeduto a Mon- signor Marcucci come vescovo di Montalto delle Marche. Klein1 and Andrew G. Humphries2 LINK TO ABSTRACT To dwell in Adam Smith’s thought one places him in history and streams of discourse. We learn a bit about his personage from contemporary memoirs and accounts, his personal communications from his correspondence, and his influences from the allusions and references in his work. Also useful is the catalogue of his personal library. He did not much write inside the books he owned (Phillipson et al. 2019; Simpson 1979, 191), but Smith scholars use the listing of his personal library in interpreting his thought. The cataloguing of books belonging to Adam Smith has been the work of numerous scholars, the two chief figures being James Bonar (1852–1941) and Hiroshi Mizuta, who in September 2019 reached the age of 100 years. To aid scholarship, we here reproduce the checklist created by Mizuta (1967). We gratefully acknowledge the permission of both Professor Mizuta and the Royal Economic Society, which holds copyright. The 1967 checklist has been bettered, notably by Mizuta’s own complete account represented by Mizuta (2000). That work, however, does not lend itself to a handy checklist to be reproduced online. When Mizuta made the 1967 checklist, those of Smith’s books held by the University of Edinburgh had not all been recognized as such. When a librarian has a volume in hand, nearly the only way to determine that it had been in Smith’s library is by the presence of his bookplate, shown below.

Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE The manuscript of Jan Strzembosz and his book collection have not been deprived of the attention of Polish scholaraship. The manuscript has been studied by Witold Rubczynski (1922), who, as Aleksander Birken- majer observed, "knew very little about its author". In fact his knowledge was "less than very little". The book collection has received the scholarly regard of many others, writing at diverse times. But none of it has amounted to more than just brief notes, not providing much information about the library collection and its history, and next to none about its original owner. Today, in an age marked by a heightened interest in the Renaissance, Strzem­ bosz’ valuable bibliophile bequest is a worthy subject for academic attention, while the life and achievements of the enlightened and public-spirited col­ lector who endowed us with it merit a few moments of notice. A compilation of the facts published earlier and more recently with the material preserved in the archives and collected still before the Second World War, which has fortunately managed to survive that War, will help to give us a fuller picture of the figure of Jan Strzembosz. In 1538 at Opoczno (now Central Poland), on a date recorded as "f. 5 post Conductum Paschae" the Strzembosz brothers, Mikołaj, the Reverend Andrzej, Derstaw, and Ambroży, sons of Jan Strzembosz of Jablonica and Wieniawa, and later of Dunajewice and Skrzyńsko, Justice of the Borough of Radom1, and Owka (Eufemia), daughter of Dersław Dunin of Smogorze- wo, Lord Crown Treasurer, and Małgorzata of Przysucha, concluded an act for the distribution of the patrimonial and maternal property left to them.

    The New Synthese Historical Library Volume 57 Moral Philosophy on the Threshold of Modernity edited by Jill Kraye and Risto Saarinen 302 LORENZO CASINI although Vives considered himself to be the first to deal with the investigation of the emotions in an adequate manner, a closer inspection reveals that he pays considerable attention to earlier thinkers and that his account relies heavily on information from a variety of sources. Although they are not introduced as opposing views, the positions of Aristotle and of the Stoics are mentioned as examples of the insufficient care with which the ancient studied the emotions. The Stoics are said to have corrupted the whole subject with their quibbling, and Aristotle is blamed for having dealt with the emotions in his Rhetoric only from an exclusively forensic point of view. Most of Vives’s definitions of the single emotions, however, are drawn from Aristotle’s Rhetoric and Cicero’s Tusculanae disputationes. The fact that Cicero is associated with the Stoics also suggests that the latter work is one of Vives’s principal sources for the Stoic theory of the passions. Moreover, his rejection of Aristotle’s contribution to the subject of the emotions clearly indicates that he based his assessment principally on the Rhetoric. The Peripatetic tradition nonetheless constitutes one of the most important sources of inspiration for Vives’s conception of the emotions. Plutarch’s De virtute morali, which is one of the best formulations of the Peripatetic ideal of a moderate degree of passion, together with his distinction between êthos and pathos, which Vives might also have encountered in Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria, influenced him, not least in his crucial distinction between passions and emotions.

The scope of this dual-language (Latin-German) edition of two works from the early modern period is valuable for the ease of comparison of original to translation and for the insights the texts provide into the socio- logical, literary, humanistic, and educational ideals of a time when the court, secular or ecclesiastical, defined standards of behavior for a particular class. Underlying both works is Lucan’s warning that he who wishes to lead a righteous or virtuous life should avoid the court. The controversial nature of Lucan’s words finds full expression in these works and others, and the excellent bibliography of secondary studies of critiques of court manners and this way of life preceding and fol- lowing the early modern period shows that the controversy extended well into the eighteenth century.
