Graduate International Seminar Linz, and , March 15-23, 2012

Seminar Objective: International seminars give an essential perspective of competencies needed to do business in Europe, along with historical and cultural influences affecting business relationships. Students learn first-hand through lectures, case-studies, discussion with leading academic and professional experts, company visits, and cultural sightseeing. The program is coordinated by our partner, Johannes University in Linz, Austria. LCB faculty travel with students and are responsible for the evaluating all academic assignments related to the program.

Program Focus: Austrian and Central/Eastern European culture and history Cross-cultural management Labor relations and the role of government EU’s economic role in the world Adjustment to market economies Developing economies of Central and Eastern Europe in the post-communist era.

Highlight: Austrian students participate in the seminar with UC students and travel with the group to Prague.

Linz (population 203,000) situated on the banks of the , is the third largest city in Austria. It is about two hours by train west of and two hours east of . The city dates to Roman settlers who valued its strategic river location. The city has an outstanding neo- Gothic cathedral and the center of the city features a variety of Baroque and Rococo architecture. Linz is best known among classical music lovers as the home of . Over 50 per cent of the city is "green", and the bike path along the banks of the Danube, from in Bavaria to Vienna, is a genuine attraction for cyclists.

Prague (pop. 1.3 million) is a city at the crossroads between east and west, between communism and capitalism. After the fall of the wall in 1989, Prague and the Czech Republic got off to a fast start moving to a market-based economy. With the Czech Republic’s entry into the EU in 2004, businesses are confronted with new challenges to meet Western standards. Prague’s preserved medieval center and a rich cultural and political history have made it one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.

Language of instruction: English, lectures and company presentations given in English.

Academic credit: Enroll for 22 INTB 802 801 Study Abroad Linz Prague either winter or spring quarter 2012. This course fulfills a 4 credit hour elective (can count as management, marketing, finance, or international business elective.)

UC tuition is paid on the quarter you enroll for the associated course. This course is available either winter or spring quarter.

Logistics: LCB International Programs Office makes group hotel reservations in modest business class hotels. Our office arranges in-country transportation to company visits, from Linz to Prague, and hosts a welcome dinner. International Airfare: Participants are responsible for their own round trip airfare between home and Europe.
