Kapelle von 1762) Bauzustand November 2001 (Foto: Wolfdieter Ludwig) Die Schankweiler Klause von Werner Laeis1 Das „Ferschweiler Plateau" mit seinen felsigen Rändern, westlich zur Sauer, östlich zur Prüm und Enz abfallend, ist uraltes Kulturgebiet. Spuren davon reichen zurück bis in die Zeit der Franken, Römer und noch weiter. Offenbar fühlten sich die Menschen in den dichten, geheimnisvollen Wäldern schon immer der Gottheit besonders nahe. Die „Schankweiler Klause" — liebevoll oft nur „et Kläusjen" genannt —, am Ostrand gelegen, hoch über den Ortschaften Holsthum und Schankweiler, mit herrlichem Blick in die weite Bitburger Landschaft, ist ein solches Zeugnis alter Volksfrömmigkeit. Seltsamerweise ist der geschichtliche Werdegang dieses Heiligtums bisher ebensowenig erforscht wie seine künstlerische Bedeutung gewürdigt worden. Vorgeschichte und geschichtliche Zusammenhänge Es geht die Sage, einer der Grafen von Vianden habe an einem Kreuzzug teilgenom- men, sei in Gefangenschaft geraten, habe dann für den Fall seiner glücklichen Errettung den Bau einer Kapelle hier oben gelobt — und so sei es denn auch geschehen. — Mag sein, mag auch nicht sein. Eine andere Sage spricht von einem Tempelherrn, der bei der Verfolgung des Ordens im 14. Jahrhundert in der Kapelle (die also da bereits bestanden hätte!) Schutz gefunden und so sein Leben gerettet habe. — Mag sein, mag auch nicht sein. Der historische Kern dieser Sagen ist möglicherweise mit dem Stichwort „Vianden" gegeben: Graf Friedrich II von Vianden — er „regierte" von 1220-1250 - hatte am Kreuzzug teilgenommen, war in die Hände der Sarazenen gefallen und konnte erst nach vieljähriger Gefangenschaft durch den Orden der Trinitarier freigekauft werden, die für solche Aktionen besondere Verbindungen und Mittel hatten. -
