Pelm: Adler- und 25 Emperor Lothar, grandson of Charlemagne turned to Wolfspark Kasselburg his favourite monastery as a place of rest. He died in Prüm, in 855. Today, his remains are in the sarcopha- gus to the right of the high altar in the St Salvator Basilica. The adjacent abbey is also very historical. In 893, Prüm Urbar was created, one of the oldest legal documents in Germany listing all the property belong- ing to the Abbey of Prüm. The historical building is now used as a school. The Basilica is one of the most popular churches in the Eifel.

This town is located on the East border of the Eifel region on the Lieser River. It is also situated a few kilo- metres distance from the Mosel River. It is the district seat of the Bernkastel-Wittlich County. In 1991, Wit- tlich celebrated its 700th anniversary. Every August, Wittlich hosts the ’Säubrennerkirmes‘ – one of the largest folk festivals in the Rhineland-Palatinate. This festival goes back to the town’s legend when Wittlich was surrounded by enemies. It is said that the gate- keeper, not finding the bolt to lock the city gate, out of desperation used a carrot to lock the gate. Along l e m e .V. came a hungry pig, ate the carrot, the gates opening, h allowing the enemies to enter, burning down the city.
