Volume 3 Issue 1 What Guys Think About Sadie Hawkins Dance Sadies 1 Sid Curtis 2-3 Sadie Hawkins dance is a girls choice dance, usually after Homecoming. For the Sadie Hawkins dance, the girls are given tags Fall Activities 4 and have to chase the boy they want to take to the dance. It is one of /Intervention 5 the most exciting ways to get someone to go to a dance. But how do the boys feel about getting chased down. I had the chance to talk to Hur- Stranger Things/FFA 6 ricane High School student, Kyle Miller. Miller stated that, “He enjoys Trends/Conspiracy Corner 7 Sadie Hawkins because you get to be chased.” Miller had the Chance to go to Sadie Hawkins last year and was more than willing to share his Hey Mr. Tiger 8 story of how it all happened. Before the tagging began Miller informed his Mother not to let any girls into his house, But his Mother told him that she was definitely letting them in and letting them tag him. As the story goes on Miller just sat down to eat a delicious dinner when there was a subtle knock at the door. Miller didn't think anything of it. In the corner of his eye he saw a female personage. Miller politely excuses himself from the table and walked to his back door. By then the chase is on. He jolts out the back door only to be surrounded completely by a gang of girls. He ran across his back yard and jumped over his fence but in the end Miller didn't make it. He was tagged. Miller said that his Mother and Sid Curtis are the ones to blame for being tagged. But in the end thanks them very much for giving him away because he had Alley and Sid a great time at sadies. Most of the boys favorite part of Sadie Hawkins Dance is being chased. So I think I am able to say that most guys at Hurricane High School enjoy the Sadie Hawkins Dance, and hope to have it for many more generations to come. Kenna and Stevo

1 Thanksgiving

Cranberry Sauce, Why is it on the Table? Ashlynn Murphy Turkey, mashed potatoes, and all get the starring roles on the Thanksgiving table. On the other side of the platter, out of the spotlight, sits a sad little plate of sauce. Every year finds a way onto the table. But why? Nobody seems to eat besides maybe grandparents and weird uncles. It seems like the wiggly jelly sauce doesn’t deserve any spot on the menu. At the end of the meal pretty much the whole thing just gets thrown away. If it’s not a family favorite, then why do we keep putting Cranberry Sauce on our Thanks- giving table? It all has to do with the history of agriculture in America. Let’s look back to where it came from and why it so often escapes the can. The cranberry is native to . Native Americans used cranberries as both food and medicine. It’s widely accepted that Pilgrims were shown cranberries by the Native Americans, who brought them to the original . Many farms in the northern states of America have cranberry crops going back 10 generations. (Fun fact, Wisconsin produces more than half the world's total crop of cranberries.) Cranberry sauce was a popular accompaniment to meat as early back as the 19th century. Cranberries are one of the only native North American fruits that are commer- cially grown. They were the first to flourish for farmers in the 1930’s when they switched from dry harvesting to wet. Wet harvesting is when they flood the crops and the berries loosen from their vine and float to the top of the water. From there they can easily be mechanically harvested faster than picking by hand in a dry harvest. Even Sadies 1 though mechanically harvesting is the fastest way to go it does have a negative side. The cranberries become too Thanksgiving 2-3 imperfect to sell as fresh produce. So as a solution to hide the imperfections, they just canned ‘em! So that’s the history of wiggly can shaped jelly we call cranberry sauce. It’s part of our American history Fall Activities 4 so maybe it deserves to be jiggled out of a can, onto a mediocre plate, and set in front of the weird uncle. As far Christmas/Intervention 5 as the cranberry sauce icon status is concerned, it will always have a place on the Thanksgiving table, just in the Stranger Things/FFA 6 shadow of everything else. Trends/Conspiracy Corner 7 Hey Mr. Tiger 8 Thanksgiving or Christmas Krystal Powell & Oceona Johnson

The biggest topic around this time of the year is Thanksgiving and Christmas. We interviewed a few people and the responses were pretty interesting. Ruben Taylor stated, “Christmas all the way! I like the overall feel you get. My favorite tradition would be either decorating the tree or making hot chocolate.”Scot shaw was the next person we interviewed. His answer was pretty simple. Shaw said, “I like Thanksgiving better because that’s the time our family and all of the cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents all get together. My uncles come up from Phoenix, AZ and we all play football; plus the food is great.” Tyson Short was the last person we interviewed. Short Said, “I love all of the you see while driving around. Also it is the best time to go shred some snow. But the one of the best parts has to be spending all that time with family and getting presents”. So now it’s all up to you, Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Does add or take away from holiday spirit? By: Adison Ellsworth

Black Friday is a popular term used for a day after Thanksgiving where all most stores sell items for cheap prices. A lot of people really dislike this tradition due to the fact that it takes away from the holiday spirit. ,Many people wonder why stores do this due to all the injuries that have occurred. Other people argue that it invites the holiday spirit to start the for christmas. According to a poll taken, 65% of people say to keep the tradition going, and 35% of people say that it isn’t safe and it isn’t fun. It is the day after Thanksgiving, the day that everyone gives thanks for what they already have. So adding this tradition where people drive into straight chaos and literally fight each other to get a flat screen for 50% off doesn’t make sense. However, 65% of people disagree. They love to start the season off right, fun, and penny pinching. “It isn’t as scary as it seems. Just really crowded. Plus, you get some good deals” Brooklyn Wilson said. As for now, the tradition stays remaining. Make the most of it, stay safe, and shop smart! Start the holidays off right. But for those 35% of you who don’t like the shopping, you can always participate in Fall Activities

When is Christmas? Brandon Callahan It’s that magical time of year again where the days are shorter, the air is brisk, and Christmas decorations are everywhere. Christmas trees are up at almost every store, is playing on the radio, and Santa is at the mall. While most people find joy and Christmas cheer when November rolls around, there will always be a few who question societies premature celebration of Christmas. That poses the question, “When is it too early to start celebrating Christmas?” While the traditional start to the Holiday season has always been considered Black Friday, or the day after Thanksgiving, it seems to be starting earlier and earlier every year. Walmart had Christmas trees up starting on November 1st, just hours after Hal Christmas ads started coming out from other National retailers such as Best Buy and Target just days after that. A twitter poll was conducted consisting of 93 votes over 48 hours, asking users “When is it acceptable to start celebrating Christmas?” The poll concluded, by an overwhelming majority, that after Thanksgiving is the prime time to get Jolly. The results found that 59% of people find it acceptable to celebrate after Thanksgiving, 20% said it’s acceptable to celebrate after Halloween, 14% think everyday is Christmas, while only 7% said they only like Christmas on December 25th, and want nothing to do with it otherwise. Maddie Baxter said in an interview that she thinks it’s too early to celebrate before Thanksgiving, and Ashlynn Murphy said Christmas seasons starts when Halloween is over. While we hope Walmart and Target don’t push Christmas to October next year, and the radio doesn’t play Christ- mas music in September, everyone has their own opinions on when the Christmas season starts, and it really is a personal preference.

Response to Intervention Ren Dutton Response to Intervention (RTI) is what we are going to try here at Hurricane High School. Instead of going to the five by five schedule which has not been effective in the schools that have tried it. This is giving students time to do homework and get extra time with a teacher without having to come in before or after school. Jodi Rich states “that it is tough to do before and after school, because people are busy with work, activities, and sports”. “This is for students that want help” (Rich). If a student does not have the motivation to learn then this will not magically help them. This way is better than having an actual lab class is that most of the time students don't need help all the time it’s usually just a question or two that they have. We are doing this trial run to find out “if it is worth it to take time out of classes to have a few kids get the extra help” (Rich). Nate Johnson stated that he doesn’t think that we would have tied this out of thin air. But there's been research done that says that RTI is one of the top five way of improving student learning outcomes. Parker stated that when he helps a student he puts it in a log. Some of the students I interviewed Hayden Eves, stated that he liked it. Maddie Baxter, said the that she thought it was wasted time. Once we get the results of whether this is help- ing with students learn or not. Then we will know if it is worth the time that is taken out of the classes is worth it. Stranger Things/FFA

Stranger Things :Whit Peterson & Clay Rowland Stranger Things, a new popular Netflix series starring Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, and Finn Wolfhard. The thrilling story takes place in the 80’s; it’s about a group of young kids in a small town called Hawkins, Indiana. That are trying to find their friend Will Byers, who went missing in the woods. The series goes on as they meet new people and run into problems, but they always find a solution in the end. The second season recently aired on netflix on the 27th of October. It takes us back to where the first -sea son left off, and the young group sticks together to solve another exciting mystery. It is a must see for anyone that watched the first season. In an interview with Laska Jessop, a student here at Hurricane High School, she said that “Stranger Things is a good show because it’s really suspenseful and it has really good character development.” Since the new season came out she has not had the chance to watch any of it, but she says “I am excited for season 2 because I want to see Steve try to be a mom.” When asked about her favorite character Laska told us, “I think my favorite character is Officer Hopps because he’s really sassy, but so nice to the kids.” We interviewed Keturah Rowland, the athletic director’s secretary, and when asked about why she loves Stranger Things she stated, “Besides the fact that it does a great job of keeping you entertained, I like the 80’s themed set- ting and the dialogue. It’s funny! Also it reminds me a lot of the movie “Goonies” which if you grew up in the 80’s you know and love it.” We then asked her what she liked more about Stranger Things 2 than the first season and she says, “I’m not sure I liked the second one more than the first.” We totally agree! We recommend watching Stranger Things to anyone that hasn’t yet, and if you have watched it, watch Stranger Things 2!

Returning Trends By:Paige Tidwell Is what you’re doing been done before? In the year of 2017, we like to be up to date, be stylish with our clothing, and keep up on trend. There are so many trends that have made a come back from the 90’s, it’s really hard to believe. Actually, not really. These trends are becoming the next big thing, even famous people are getting up to date and bringing trends back. Is it because they miss it or is it just for fun? It's not a bad thing, it's good to be up to date. Here are some trends that have made a comeback. Overalls have made a huge come back in 2017. A few students from Hurricane High School have been wearing them all over school. It’s the cool thing to do. It's a trend to wear a cute shirt underneath them and put on some stylish shoes. Stylist have even come up with leather overalls, who knew? Overalls are kind of like a summer- spring look. Although overalls are cool, another returning trend are chokers. A good amount the girl students at the high school, own at least one choker and wear them around town. It’s the trend to pick the right outfit and top it off with your favorite choker. I personally don’t like to wear chokers but, most girls can pull them off with the perfect outfit. There are several girls that wear chokers here at Hurricane High. Another returning trend of 2017 is cuffed, high waisted, ripped jeans, and high topped shoes. Most girls own a pair of high waisted ripped jeans. And almost everyone has a pair of high tops. High tops are the latest trend for boys and girls, they are worn all over the school. A unisex trend that has came back from the 80’s-90’s is ripped jeans and plaid shirts. Also, pegging jeans are a huge thing today along with Birkenstocks. Parents in their 30’s-40’s are pretty much the only people that would wear Birkenstocks. In 2017, we have came up with a shoe called the Sandals a.k.a. Jandals, which are pretty much the same as Birkenstocks. Last of all, some boy trends that have made a HUGE comeback are mullets. Mullets have been around since the early 70’s. Nowadays, men have been growing their hair out or even longer than that length. Most boys from Hur- ricane High School that have the ‘cowboy’ look are pulling off the mullets. It’s became a big thing in the 2000’s.It’s the “cool” thing to do. Why Was JFK Killed? \The assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, but why was he killed? Robert Johnson & Hayden Eves With the release of the JFK files many have been wondering why it happened and who was involved. Many believe involvement of the CIA, the Mafia, sitting Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro, and the KGB. There has to be an explanation for Presidents Kennedy's tragic assassination, and a reason for the killing. Yet many people still believe that Lee Harvey Oswald, was the killer for many years, But recently files re- leased, have disavowed the claim. And make it seem like it was an inside job. If that is true who killed the president? Because many people still believe that it was Lee Harvey oswald who assassinated the president. What was his mo- tive? If someone had a motive it would’ve had to be someone who didn't like what the president's choices in office Who played A part in the assassination? Well that would have to be someone that did not like how the president had ran the country, and also many countries including Cuba, and Communist had a motive to kill the president. So who killed the president? Many of you have your own opinions about it. Think long and hard about this topic, because it still needs to be solved. Hey Mr. Tiger Hey Mr. Tiger
