Assistant Director’s Report By: Robin Shilling

Our Road Warrior program has ended for 2015 and we have started logging miles for 2016. We came VERY close in 2014 to hitting our million mile chapter goal and it will be VERY interesting to see if we hit our goal this year. How many miles do YOU think we rode as a chapter? If you’d like to take a guess, please email me at [email protected] by December 1. The closest to the actual number will win a gift card from me that you can spend at Classic Harley Davidson. The winner will be announced at our Christmas Party on December 5 but you need not be there to win. You can pick your gift card up at our December meeting or make arrangements with me to get it later. I will be collecting donations for this year again. All of the money I collect will be used to provide plants that we will deliver to the Lebanon VA. The same people that provide them for our Christmas party give us a GREAT deal on the larger ones for just $5. I will have a collection bin on the front table near me. Anything you can contribute will be MOST appreciated!

It’s not the destination, it’s the journey!

The Pig Pot Win cash by being present at our chapter meeting and play by placing $1.00 in our Pig Pot jar. One member’s name is pulled at the close of the meeting; if that member is present and did play, they win! If no winner; all the money remains in the Pot and is added to the following month. **************************** If Berks County HOG’s member Dan Zellers was present at the October meeting, he would have walked away $193 richer. Safety Matters For Berks County HOG Where Member Safety is a Priority

Safety Officer’s Report By: Dave Weik

“I thought I would reprint my November 2013 article as I believe it still shares key and current things to consider and remember.” With daylight savings time behind us causing shortened daylight and the drop in temperatures, we really need to keep an eye out for safety. Consider following the “SEE” system”; Search around you for potential hazards, Evaluate any possible hazards such as turning cars, railroad tracks, ice, etc., and Execute the proper actions in a timely manner. The “SEE” system is a mental system for safe motorcycling. It may be used effectively for safer, happier riding. The key to the “SEE” system is to keep looking; look ahead, look to the sides, look in your mirrors, and look over your shoulder. Remind our 4-wheels friends to continue to look for motorcycles this fall and winter, when most drivers are not thinking about motorcycles still being on the road. Almost half of all motorcycle accidents occur at intersections, so be especially cautious and look carefully for dangers riding through and pulling out at intersections. Look for animals crossing the road or that have been hit and lying on the road, especially deer this time of year. Look for that patch of wet leaves, loose gravel, and other fall seasonal debris. Dusk, which comes way earlier this time of year, is a difficult time to “SEE”. Your eyes are adjusting from daylight to headlight. The sun is extremely low in the sky and can be blinding. As the sun sets watch for the transition from sunglasses to clear lenses. Be sure to stop and make the switch for best visibility and the most effective use of the “SEE” system. Welcome to the Club All New Members!! There is still plenty of fun riding this year, so utilize the “SEE” system for a safe extended riding season.

Ride Safe! Be Safe!

Berks County HOG is committed to safe riding and having fun. As your Safety Officer, working along with our outstanding team of Road Captains, my focus is on “Safety in Everything We Do” for our enjoyable riding experience. If you have a positive “safety matter” or observation to support member safety, I welcome your input or questions to support this priority.

Chapter Member’s “Safety Lines” for November If you submit a “Safety Line” for the newsletter and it’s published, you will receive 5 free raffle tickets at the next month’s Chapter Membership Meeting. ********************** “It is not only important to see, but to be seen also. Wear bright clothes and reflective panels or tape.”

********************** Chapter members are requested to contribute “SafetyLines” (a one line safety thought, slogan, or cartoon) for promoting safe riding, by submitting them to Safety Officer Dave Weik at [email protected]. If your “SafetyLines” are published in our newsletter you will receive 5 free raffle tickets at the chapter’s membership meeting towards winning a door prize donated by Classic Harley-Davidson. Sponsor’s Report By: Kevin Kodz Dot and everyone here at Classic Harley-Davidson want to say a big thank you to everyone who participated or helped with the Eastern PA Toy Run. This year there were 327 motorcycles, 38 Jeeps, 18 Mustangs, and 6 “other” vehicles who rode the parade route from the dealership to First Energy Stadium. Participants donated over 1,400 toys and there were monetary donations of $3,843. The monetary donations are used to purchase additional toys for the age groups which typically run out of items first. While the event is fresh in everyones minds, please take the time to email [email protected] and let her know what you thought went well and what you might like to see changed going forward. We’re always looking for ways to improve on this very worthwhile community event. Your input is both welcomed and appreciated. Also, the Trolley will always be part of the toy run, if you know family members that would like to ride in the trolley for the run, keep it in mind for next year. Sunday, November 22 will be our annual Chrome Sunday event. The weekend will feature refreshments around the store, great holiday gift giving ideas, free gift wrapping for all purchases and a scratch off card to win some awesome prizes. We’ll be open from 9am to 5pm with events happening throughout the day. Anyone who has volunteered to help out with our Holiday Open House can stop by and see Dot at any time to pick up your shirt to wear for the Open House. At a recent meeting in Milwaukee, the Harley-Davidson Consumer Insight and Analytics group shared some very thorough research that they’ve completed over the past year. Some of the most enlightening information from a dealership perspective came from a survey completed with over 10,000 current Harley-Davidson riders. Those of us that live here in the dealership everyday sometimes assume that everyone has the same knowledge of motorcycles that we do. This study showed that even the most die hard Harley-Davidson riders don’t know about many of our models, including the newly redesigned Sportster 48 and Iron 883 models. Many die hard enthusiasts also didn’t realize that we have 3 models that are under $10,000. So even if you’re not in the market for a new bike right now, stop by the shop and ask Frank, Matt or Danielle to give you a walk through of all the new motorcycles that we have available. Screw it, let’s ride!

Ladies of Harley Report By: Beth Sattizahn

How did it get to be November, already? I hope you got to experience the great colors of Mother Nature on 2…or 3. LOH participated in Robesonia’s 3rd annual Parade on November 1. The parade has grown quite a bit, and we all had just as much fun this year. A huge thank you to Craig and Tracey Heck for putting together the float truck and trailer, and to Sherry and Turk Zerr for the sled! Thank you to everyone who donated candy, and especially to those who participated – Tammy Eschbach, Deb Weik, Tracy James, Tracy Heck, Maggie Briedenstein, Brenda Henne, Brenda Newcomer, Holly Hoffman, Cathy Czarnecki, Jen Lengle, Rock McFalls, MaryAnn Fantini, Momma D., Mandi Bickleman and Becky Alan, Crystal and Logan, Tiffany and Sam, BreAnna, and..Craig! We’re quite excited about the Bras and BBQ event on Sunday, November 15. If you haven’t signed up, please email me as soon as possible to make sure there’s enough staff to handle all us…..girls. We’ll be enjoying Never Forgotten BBQ again. Bill loves when the Berks LOH visit! Thanks to MaryAnn Fantini for putting together a monthly Wednesday night social – the 3rd Wednesday of each month. There seems to be so little time to socialize and catch up during the Meet n Greet on LOH Meeting nights, so this is a great way to do that. The next one is Wednesday, November 18 at 6 PM – Ozgoods, in Robesonia. Please let MaryAnn or myself know that you can attend. We have a private room. Remember to register your miles for the Road Warrior Program. Even though you may not ride 10,000 miles to make the Road Warrior award, every mile you ride counts towards our Chapter goal. If you’ve missed the November 8 reading, please stop by Classic or see one of the Officers to have your miles recorded. Ladies, as with this year, I believe Tammy will continue the mileage awards for LOH as well – so make sure you’re registered! Thank you to Classic H-D for our LOH November door prizes! Winners are happy people! Our December LOH meeting will be our LOH Christmas/ Holiday Party – December 2 – Blind Hartman’s Tavern. If you haven’t responded that you want to attend, please email [email protected], so you are not missed in any emails. It will be at 6 PM – Wednesday, December 2. Please submit your name and 3 ideas at next meeting or November’s meeting, if you would like to participate in the $20 gift exchange. If anyone wishes to donate a door prize, please see Beth. We will pre-order off of Blind Hartman’s menu. They should be getting that to me very soon. Will pick names at the November meeting – if you cannot be at meeting – email Beth your intent to exchange – and 3 ideas for your . I’d like to thank Tammy Eschbach for stepping into the LOH Officer position! She’s got a lot of great ideas, and will also be looking for ride/event suggestions as well. There’s still time to set up a ride/event. Use the LOH group, or email and I can put something out.

Until then – enjoy the Season!! Page 6 November 2015

“Pink Your Ride”by Kendra Wrap-Up Lindauer Having several members of my family battle breast cancer, as soon as I saw the “Pink Your Ride” invitation from the Bucks County HOG chapter it was something I wanted to participate in. I’m new to the group so this was my first venture as a RC – having just learned exactly what a RC is! We were a small group but had BIG fun! Holly Leininger, Don Lesher, and I rode down to Brian’s HD, where a fellow Berks HOG member, Chris Comly met us, as he was participating with both chapters. I knew the day would be nothing short of an adventure when, at the traffic light at W Leesport Road, the guy in the truck in front of me glanced in his read-view mirror and laughed at the pink brassiere that was on my windshield! I’m sure many people chuckled when they saw our “pink’d-out” bikes! When we got to Brian’s HD, we saw pink beards, pink ribbons and pink balloons filling pink bras – just to mention a few of the decorations! The event kick-off was emotional. Two sisters started the ride for their sister Mia, who lost a fight with breast cancer. They’ve turned her name into an acronym – Motorcyclists Increasing Awareness. That’s the focus, awareness. October is breast cancer awareness month and the funds raised are used to provide free screenings for St. Mary’s hospital and purchase some equipment. – SOAPBOX alert: It’s great when funds raised go directly to those they are intended to benefit vs. a $650K salary for the CEO of a nonprofit! (Standing off the soapbox) Awareness: remember, men are not immune to breast cancer. The ride was stunning – and I’m just not sure that covers it well enough. New Hope is a gorgeous ride! The town, the curvy roads, going into and out of the sunshine not to mention the scenery was simply beautiful. The fall foliage was in full bloom – the range of colors from yellow to multiple shades of orange and reds were outstanding against the bright blue color of the sky. People in town and in cars waved and took pictures. Many of the riders waved and offered the peace sign. Having never been on a police escorted ride, I was clearly in for a treat. When the first (4) traffic lights were green as I passed under them, I have to be honest, I was mildly disappointed. However, there were many more lights to follow – many of which were red as I rode under them – and, as a child on her parent’s shoulders – it was certainly fun to just keep on riding! Call me silly but “legally” going through red lights was FUN – possibly it had something to do with NOT having to stop while riding. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the police that escorted the ride. It’s unclear if bravery or maniacal is an appropriate descriptor! Multiple police officers and ride escorts rode in the oncoming traffic lane around blind corners (sometimes moving over slightly!), went head-to-head with a Sport utility vehicle and a commercial truck to keep our ride moving! They went to great lengths to stop traffic and keep us safe! A club in New did a “Pink Your Ride” the same day. The ride founder’s vision is many more rides, benefitting local hospitals, spreading awareness on the same day. We are welcomed back to join their ride, but they offered assistance in helping us plan a ride locally. Either way, ladies, be aware, take care of you, exercise, eat right and self-exam – and maybe have a partner help you with the latter! November 2015 Page 7 Newsletter Items
