Having been born in Greece, and having lived there till my early twenties, it is the place that holds all my childhood memories, my first encounters with dance, my friends, and my family. From a very early age I remember how I always used to say that I wanted to study dance and then move to the US to pursue my dream. Back then I was not sure what that dream was, other than leaving Greece, where I often felt like I did not belong. Being here now, in the US, I think I found it and I must admit that when I first begun my pursuit in graduate studies in dance, I was very hesitant to engage in research concerning Greece. -

Educating the whole person? The case of Athens College, 1940-1990 Polyanthi Giannakopoulou-Tsigkou Institute of Education, University of London A thesis submitted for the Degree of EdD September 2012 Abstract This thesis is a historical study of the growth and development of Athens College, a primary/secondary educational institution in Greece, during the period 1940-1990. Athens College, a private, non-profit institution, was founded in 1925 as a boys' school aiming to offer education for the whole person. The research explores critically the ways in which historical, political, socio-economic and cultural factors affected the evolution of Athens College during the period 1940-1990 and its impact on students' further studies and careers. This case study seeks to unfold aspects of education in a Greek school, and reach a better understanding of education and factors that affect it and interact with it. A mixed methods approach is used: document analysis, interviews with Athens College alumni and former teachers, analysis of student records providing data related to students' achievements, their family socio-economic 'origins' and their post-Athens College 'destinations'. The study focuses in particular on the learners at the School, and the kinds of learning that took place within this institution over half a century. Athens College, although under the control of a centralised educational system, has resisted the weaknesses of Greek schooling. Seeking to establish educational ideals associated with education of the whole person, excellence, meritocracy and equality of opportunity and embracing progressive curricula and pedagogies, it has been successful in taking its students towards university studies and careers. -

Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

Fifth report of the Committee of Experts in respect of Spain Item to be considered by the GR-J at its meeting on 19 September 2019 In accordance with Article 16 paragraph 3 of the Charter, the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages submits its fifth report on the application of the Charter in Spain to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The report contains proposals for recommendations to be addressed by the Committee of Ministers to Spain. The Spanish Government has been given the opportunity to comment on the content, in accordance with Article 16 paragraph 3 of the Charter. 1 This document has been classified restricted at the date of issue. In accordance with the Deputies’ decision (CM/Del/Dec(2001)765/10.4), it will be declassified after examination by the Committee of Ministers. Website: www.coe.int/cm CM(2019)125 2 The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages provides for a control mechanism to evaluate how the Charter is applied in a State Party with a view to, where necessary, making recommendations for improving its legislation, policy and practices. The central element of this procedure is the Committee of Experts, set up under Article 17 of the Charter. Its principal purpose is to report to the Committee of Ministers on its evaluation of compliance by a Party with its undertakings, to examine the real situation of regional or minority languages in the State and, where appropriate, to encourage the Party to gradually reach a higher level of commitment. -

All Balkan languages have given and taken from each other. The impacts on these languages have been merely of local character and were limited to border dialects. In contrast to these effects, Turkish borrowings are spread so uniformly in the Balkan languages, that a significant number of them can be defined as"Balkan Turkisms". In this work, we aim to bring to readers attention a clear overview focusing on: Common fund of Balkan Turkisms and its lexical and grammatical characteristic. Examples of the use of Turkish words in texts of different Balkan languages (Albanian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Croatian, Macedonian, Bosnian, Greek, Romanian) can be traced to the early fifteenth century. The process of borrowing from Turkish culminated in the nineteenth century. For the Balkans, Turkish was the language of communication within the Ottoman Empire. Most of Turkish lexeme has not only been adapted to Balkan languages, but has also become a natural component of the general and regional language. The borrowed words were not only accepted by the spoken languages of the Balkans, but they 175 Lindita Xhanari (Latifi), Kledi Satka (Shegani) also joined the literature, the language of religious teaching, that of administrative documents and other written texts. -

Abstract: In recent decades Western Europe has seen a dramatic increase in the political activity of ethnic groups demanding special institutional provisions to preserve their distinct identity. This mobilization represents the relative failure of centuries of assimilationist policies among some of the oldest nation-states and an unexpected outcome for scholars of modernization and nation-building. In its wake, the phenomenon generated a significant scholarship attempting to account for this activity, much of which focused on differences in economic growth as the root cause of ethnic activism. However, some scholars find these models to be based on too short a timeframe for a rich understanding of the phenomenon or too narrowly focused on material interests at the expense of considering institutions, culture, and psychology. In response to this broader debate, this study explores fifteen ethnic groups in three countries (France, Spain, and the United Kingdom) over the last two centuries as well as factoring in changes in Western European thought and institutions more broadly, all in an attempt to build a richer understanding of ethnic mobilization. MUSIC AND TRADITIONS OF THRACE (GREECE): A TRANS-CULTURAL TEACHING TOOL 1 Kalliopi Stiga 2 Evangelia Kopsalidou 3 Abstract: The geopolitical location as well as the historical itinerary of Greece into time turned the country into a meeting place of the European, the Northern African and the Middle-Eastern cultures. Fables, beliefs and religious ceremonies, linguistic elements, traditional dances and music of different regions of Hellenic space testify this cultural convergence. One of these regions is Thrace. The aim of this paper is firstly, to deal with the music and the dances of Thrace and to highlight through them both the Balkan and the middle-eastern influence. Secondly, through a listing of music lessons that we have realized over the last years, in schools and universities of modern Thrace, we are going to prove if music is or not a useful communication tool – an international language – for pupils and students in Thrace. Finally, we will study the influence of these different “traditions” on pupils and students’ behavior. Fábulas, crenças e cerimónias religiosas, elementos linguísticos, danças tradicionais e a música das diferentes regiões do espaço helénico são testemunho desta convergência cultural. Uma destas regiões é a Trácia. O objectivo deste artigo é, em primeiro lugar, tratar da música e das danças da Trácia e destacar através delas as influências tanto dos Balcãs como do Médio Oriente. -

The Most Important and Urgent Environmental Problems in Greece in the Last Decade (2000-2010) Athanasios Valavanidis and Thomais Vlachogianni Department of Chemistry, University of Athens, University Campus Zografou, 15784 Athens, Greece ([email protected]) Abstract A comprehensive state of the Greek environment in the last decade is presented in this review as well as the most important and urgent environmental issues. Greece's major efforts in the last decades to achieve economic convergence with the other European Union countries and material prosperity for its citizens, resulted in the neglect of the environmental impact by tourism, construction, intensive agriculture, industrial development and rapid urbanization. Greece's environment faces some major environmental challenges, such as air emissions from transport and electricity power stations, overexploitation of its water resources, water pollution, degradation of its coastal zones, loss of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine ecosystems and increasing municipal and industrial waste. In the last decade major problems of management, funding and implementation of policies with strict environmental regulations have appeared in every aspect of environmental protection. Limited enforcement of environmental laws and practices and giving in to various demands of organized local interests has been the Achilles' heel of policy implementation. This situation resulted in the lack of clear strategies for the major environmental problems and the necessity for environmental reforms in many areas. Although funding and environmental taxes have been a major problem for Greece, corruption and malpractices by local authorities, private citizens and state institutions is another important issue. It is hoped that EU regulations and international obligations will force consultation and encouragement of public participation, as well as education and environmental information that will increase public awareness. -

In addition to tasting the food, young visitors will be able to demonstrate their talents as junior chefs by making and baking Christmas biscuits and taking part in other activities including Christmas crafts and face painting, offered by the relevant sections of the IEK DELTA Ioannina. This Christmas DODONI will continue to support and contribute to the local community by offering the children of the Dourachani Monastery orphanage a large quantity of pure fresh milk, with the taste of good, love and contribution. It will also donate products to ELEPAP - Rehabilitation For the Disabled - in Athens, Thessaloniki and Ioannina as well as providing financial support to FLOGA - Parents Association of Children with Cancer. It is worth mentioning that in 2017 the company made available over 110 tons of DODONI products to organisations, institutions and NGOs, that care for victims of the Greek crisis, throughout Greece. Mr. Michalis Panagiotakis, Deputy CEO of DODONI, made the following statement: ''We take great joy in implementing corporate social responsibility activities centred on man and the local community and we will continue along this same path, supporting practical initiatives that focus on solidarity, contribution, and love for our fellow citizens''. -

ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to assess attitudes of speakers towards their local or regional variety. Research in the field of sociolinguistics has shown that factors such as gender, age, place of residence, and social status affect linguistic behaviour and perception of local and regional varieties. This thesis consists of three main parts. In the first part the concept of language, minority language, and dialect is discussed; in the second part the official position towards local or regional varieties in Europe and in Italy is considered; in the third part attitudes of speakers towards actions aimed at safeguarding their local or regional varieties are analyzed. The conclusion offers a comparison of the results of the surveys and a discussion on how things may develop in the future. Both Aragonese and Catalan are minority and minoritised languages within the territory, while Castilian Spanish, the majority language, enjoys total legal protection and legitimation. The fact that we live in the era of the nation-state is crucial for understanding endangered languages in their specific socio-political context. This is why policies at macro-level and micro-level are essential for language maintenance and equality. In this article, we carry out an in-depth analysis of 57 documents: international and national legal documents, education reports, and education curricula. The aims of the paper are: 1) to analyse the current state of Aragonese language teaching in primary education in Aragon, and 2) to suggest solutions and desirable policies to address the passive bilingualism of Aragonese- speaking schoolchildren. We conclude that the linguistic diversity of a trilingual autonomous community is not reflected in the real life situation. There is also a need to Comentado [FG1]: Syntax unclear, meaning ambiguous implement language policies (bottom-up and top-down initiatives) to promote compulsory education in a minoritised language. We therefore propose a linguistic model that capitalises all languages. This study may contribute to research into Aragonese- Comentado [FG2]: Letters can be capitalized, but not languages.
