Let us start back in your childhood, Aris. Were you born in Greece? AK: In Piraeus. JC: Where is Piraeus in Greece? AK: It's next to Athens. JC: It's close to Athens then? AK: Well, it's sort of like adjacent to it. JC: Ah, it's the port there? AK: Right. JC: When were you born? AK: May 14, 1938. JC: What were your parents doing at that time? AK: I guess they were having a hard time. My father wasn't able to work or something in those days. He also had some problems at the time with his in-laws, my mother's brother and the whole family. My father was, I think, very intelligent and he threatened everybody. That's what happened. JC: Well, Piraeus is a shipping port. AK: Yes. But he wasn't in that kind of business or anything. He was just -- as a matter of fact, I remember a story that one of his jobs was selling ties on the street. JC: That's pretty much when the Depression was going on in America and pretty much all over the world. -

Educating the whole person? The case of Athens College, 1940-1990 Polyanthi Giannakopoulou-Tsigkou Institute of Education, University of London A thesis submitted for the Degree of EdD September 2012 Abstract This thesis is a historical study of the growth and development of Athens College, a primary/secondary educational institution in Greece, during the period 1940-1990. Athens College, a private, non-profit institution, was founded in 1925 as a boys' school aiming to offer education for the whole person. The research explores critically the ways in which historical, political, socio-economic and cultural factors affected the evolution of Athens College during the period 1940-1990 and its impact on students' further studies and careers. This case study seeks to unfold aspects of education in a Greek school, and reach a better understanding of education and factors that affect it and interact with it. A mixed methods approach is used: document analysis, interviews with Athens College alumni and former teachers, analysis of student records providing data related to students' achievements, their family socio-economic 'origins' and their post-Athens College 'destinations'. The study focuses in particular on the learners at the School, and the kinds of learning that took place within this institution over half a century. Athens College, although under the control of a centralised educational system, has resisted the weaknesses of Greek schooling. Seeking to establish educational ideals associated with education of the whole person, excellence, meritocracy and equality of opportunity and embracing progressive curricula and pedagogies, it has been successful in taking its students towards university studies and careers. -

Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

The Most Important and Urgent Environmental Problems in Greece in the Last Decade (2000-2010) Athanasios Valavanidis and Thomais Vlachogianni Department of Chemistry, University of Athens, University Campus Zografou, 15784 Athens, Greece ([email protected]) Abstract A comprehensive state of the Greek environment in the last decade is presented in this review as well as the most important and urgent environmental issues. Greece's major efforts in the last decades to achieve economic convergence with the other European Union countries and material prosperity for its citizens, resulted in the neglect of the environmental impact by tourism, construction, intensive agriculture, industrial development and rapid urbanization. Greece's environment faces some major environmental challenges, such as air emissions from transport and electricity power stations, overexploitation of its water resources, water pollution, degradation of its coastal zones, loss of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine ecosystems and increasing municipal and industrial waste. In the last decade major problems of management, funding and implementation of policies with strict environmental regulations have appeared in every aspect of environmental protection. Limited enforcement of environmental laws and practices and giving in to various demands of organized local interests has been the Achilles' heel of policy implementation. This situation resulted in the lack of clear strategies for the major environmental problems and the necessity for environmental reforms in many areas. Although funding and environmental taxes have been a major problem for Greece, corruption and malpractices by local authorities, private citizens and state institutions is another important issue. It is hoped that EU regulations and international obligations will force consultation and encouragement of public participation, as well as education and environmental information that will increase public awareness. -

The Vlachs of Greece and their Misunderstood History Helen Abadzi1 January 2004 Abstract The Vlachs speak a language that evolved from Latin. Latin was transmitted by Romans to many peoples and was used as an international language for centuries. Most Vlach populations live in and around the borders of modern Greece. The word „Vlachs‟ appears in the Byzantine documents at about the 10th century, but few details are connected with it and it is unclear it means for various authors. It has been variously hypothesized that Vlachs are descendants of Roman soldiers, Thracians, diaspora Romanians, or Latinized Greeks. However, the ethnic makeup of the empires that ruled the Balkans and the use of the language as a lingua franca suggest that the Vlachs do not have one single origin. DNA studies might clarify relationships, but these have not yet been done. In the 19th century Vlach was spoken by shepherds in Albania who had practically no relationship with Hellenism as well as by urban Macedonians who had Greek education dating back to at least the 17th century and who considered themselves Greek. The latter gave rise to many politicians, literary figures, and national benefactors in Greece. Because of the language, various religious and political special interests tried to attract the Vlachs in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the same time, the Greek church and government were hostile to their language. The disputes of the era culminated in emigrations, alienation of thousands of people, and near-disappearance of the language. Nevertheless, due to assimilation and marriages with Greek speakers, a significant segment of the Greek population in Macedonia and elsewhere descends from Vlachs. -

The analysis of the Linear B tablets demonstrates that, among the lower-status people, a social group that has been generally treated by scholars as internally undifferentiated, there were differentiations in social status and levels of dependence. D i g i t a l Communication P o l i c i e s | 29 Digital television policies in Greece Stylianos Papathanassopoulos* and Konstantinos Papavasilopoulos** A SHORT VIEW OF THE GREEK TV LANDSCAPE Greece is a small European country, located on the southern region of the Balkan Peninsula, in the south-eastern part of Europe. The total area of the country is 132,000 km2, while its population is of 11.5 million inhabitants. Most of the population, about 4 million, is concentrated in the wider metropolitan area of the capital, Athens. This extreme concentration is one of the side effects of the centralized character of the modern Greek state, alongside the unplanned urbanization caused by the industrialization of the country since the 1960s. Unlike other European countries, almost all Greeks (about 98 per cent of the population) speak the same language, Greek, as mother tongue, and share the same religion, the Greek Orthodox. Greece has joined the EU (then it was called the European Economic Community) in the 1st of January, 1981. It is also a member of the Eurozone since 2001. Until 2007 (when Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU), Greece was the only member-state of the EU in its neighborhood region. Central control and inadequate planning is a “symptom” of the modern Greek state that has seriously “infected” not only urbanization, but other sectors of the Greek economy and industry as well, like for instance, the media. The media sector in Greece is characterized by an excess in supply over demand. In effect, it appears to be a kind of tradition in Greece, since there are more newspapers, more TV channels, more magazines and more radio stations than such a small market can support (Papathanassopoulos 2001).
