Guillory Jr., PhD, Chief Schools Officer DATE: September 27, 2019 RE: Update on the Latin Lyceum The following report is in response to a motion by Gerard Nutter & Andy Descoteaux: Administration to explain the change in philosophy regarding class location for the Latin Lyceum and Freshman Academy. Robert DeLossa prepared a response for Head of Lowell High School Busteed. The entirety of the response is reflected herein. From: Robert DeLossa To: Marianne Busteed Date: 25 September 2019 RE: Response to School Committee Motion with regard to the change of Freshman location to FA for Lyceum Students With regard to the question of whether the decision to house the teachers of Freshman Lyceum students in the Freshman Academy reflected a change of philosophy underlying the Lowell Latin Lyceum, I can state categorically that it did not. The underlying philosophy of the LLL remains the same as it has since the beginning of the Lyceum. Below I will point to two different areas to consider. The first is that the move to the Freshman Academy actually is more consistent with the philosophy of the Lyceum than the previous arrangement. Second, the move to the Freshman Academy better supports the individual needs of Lyceum students, who because of their academic giftedness and creativity, often need more social-emotional support than the previous arrangement provided. That support is physically located in the Freshman Academy. -

7 Singapore: Rapid Improvement Followed by Strong Performance Singapore is one of Asia’s great success stories, transforming itself from a developing country to a modern industrial economy in one generation. During the last decade, Singapore’s education system has remained consistently at or near the top of most major world education ranking systems. This chapter examines how this “tiny red dot” on the map has achieved and sustained so much, so quickly. From Singapore’s beginning, education has been seen as central to building both the economy and the nation. The objective was to serve as the engine of human capital to drive economic growth. The ability of the government to successfully match supply with demand of education and skills is a major source of Singapore’s competitive advantage. Other elements in its success include a clear vision and belief in the centrality of education for students and the nation; persistent political leadership and alignment between policy and practice; a focus on building teacher and leadership capacity to deliver reforms at the school level; ambitious standards and assessments; and a culture of continuous improvement and future orientation that benchmarks educational practices against the best in the world. Educating the whole person? The case of Athens College, 1940-1990 Polyanthi Giannakopoulou-Tsigkou Institute of Education, University of London A thesis submitted for the Degree of EdD September 2012 Abstract This thesis is a historical study of the growth and development of Athens College, a primary/secondary educational institution in Greece, during the period 1940-1990. Athens College, a private, non-profit institution, was founded in 1925 as a boys' school aiming to offer education for the whole person. The research explores critically the ways in which historical, political, socio-economic and cultural factors affected the evolution of Athens College during the period 1940-1990 and its impact on students' further studies and careers. This case study seeks to unfold aspects of education in a Greek school, and reach a better understanding of education and factors that affect it and interact with it. A mixed methods approach is used: document analysis, interviews with Athens College alumni and former teachers, analysis of student records providing data related to students' achievements, their family socio-economic 'origins' and their post-Athens College 'destinations'. The study focuses in particular on the learners at the School, and the kinds of learning that took place within this institution over half a century. Athens College, although under the control of a centralised educational system, has resisted the weaknesses of Greek schooling. Seeking to establish educational ideals associated with education of the whole person, excellence, meritocracy and equality of opportunity and embracing progressive curricula and pedagogies, it has been successful in taking its students towards university studies and careers. -

THE NATURAL HUMAN GOOD “All human beings, by nature, long for knowledge.”1 They are familiar words—the first line of Aristotle’s Metaphysics—and have righteously inspired reflections on human nature, operation, and the good at which they aim for millennia. To long for knowledge: not merely to want it for some ulterior motive—such as making money, or power, or defeating your enemies—but for its own sake. We want to know because knowledge is fulfilling for us. This is what Aristotle meant, and this fulfillment by knowledge, indeed, is what we long for by nature. Many, it is sad to say, have had this natural longing diverted by the proliferation of easy and lesser pleasures—why read, when you can watch a documentary; and why watch a documentary, when you can watch a comedy—as well as by institutions of learning which diverged from developing or fulfilling the desire for knowledge, towards conveying standardized sets of information. -

Attending kindergarten improves cognitive development in India, but all kindergartens are not equal∗ Joshua T. Dean Seema Jayachandran University of Chicago Booth School of Business Northwestern University July 23, 2020 Abstract Early childhood is a critical period for child development, and several studies find high returns to formal early schooling (e.g., pre-K) in developed countries. However, there is limited evidence on whether formal pre-primary schooling is an effective model in developing countries. We study the impacts of attending kindergarten on child devel- opment in Karnataka, India, through a randomized evaluation. We partnered with a private kindergarten provider to offer two-year scholarships to children in low-income families. Children who attend the partner kindergarten due to the scholarship experi- ence a 0.8 standard deviation gain in cognitive development. Some children induced to attend the partner kindergarten would not have attended kindergarten, while others would have attended a different kindergarten. We use machine learning techniques to predict each child's counterfactual activity and then estimate separate treatment ef- fects for each type of switcher. We find that the short-run effect on cognition is driven mostly by children who would have otherwise not attended kindergarten. About 40% of the effect on cognitive development persists through first grade, with more persis- tence for higher-order thinking skills. SHERMAN ALEXIE Indian Education
SHERMAN ALEXIE SHERMAN ALEXIE is a poet, fiction writer, and filmmaker known for witty and frank explorations of the lives of contemporary Native Americans. A Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian, Alexie was born in 1966 and grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington. He spent two years at Gonzaga University before transferring to Washington State University in Pullman. The same year he graduated, 1991, Alexie published The Business ofFancydancing, a book of poetry that led the New York Times Book Review to call him "one of the major lyric voices of our time." Since then Alexie has published many more books of poetry, including I Would Steal Horses ( 1993) and One Stick Song (2000); the novels Reservation Blues (1995) and Indian Killer (1996); and the story collections The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (1993), The Toughest Indian in the World (2000), and Ten Little Indi ans ( 2003). Alexie also wrote and produced Smoke Signals, a film that won awards at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, and he wrote and directed The Business of Fancydancing (2002), a film about the paths of two young men from the Spokane reservation. Living in Seattle with his wife and children, Alexie occasionally performs as a stand-up comic and holds the record for the most consecutive years as World Heavyweight Poetry Bout Champion. Indian Education Alexie attended the tribal school on the Spokane reservation through the seventh grade, when he decided to seek a better education at an off-reservation :', \ all-white high school. As this year-by-year account of his schooling makes clear, he was not firmly at home in either setting. -

Loveland Classical Schools Lyceum (Elementary) Academic Dean, 0.5 FTE; 2019/20 School Year REPORTS TO: The Lyceum Principal Description: The Lyceum Academic Dean is an exempt position. The Lyceum Academic Dean is responsible for supporting and coaching the elementary faculty, as well as ensuring the academic program is being implemented according to the principles of LCS. The Lyceum Academic Dean is accountable to the Lyceum Principal. The Lyceum Academic Dean will support and coach the elementary faculty at LCS and help oversee the classical curriculum and instruction at LCS. He or she is employed at will and operates as a professional within the guidelines established by the School Charter and the BOD. These guidelines provide that instruction be consistent with the Core Knowledge Sequence and the High School curriculum. The Lyceum Academic Dean will be accountable in the following areas of responsibility.
