Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

The Vlachs of Greece and their Misunderstood History Helen Abadzi1 January 2004 Abstract The Vlachs speak a language that evolved from Latin. Latin was transmitted by Romans to many peoples and was used as an international language for centuries. Most Vlach populations live in and around the borders of modern Greece. The word „Vlachs‟ appears in the Byzantine documents at about the 10th century, but few details are connected with it and it is unclear it means for various authors. It has been variously hypothesized that Vlachs are descendants of Roman soldiers, Thracians, diaspora Romanians, or Latinized Greeks. However, the ethnic makeup of the empires that ruled the Balkans and the use of the language as a lingua franca suggest that the Vlachs do not have one single origin. DNA studies might clarify relationships, but these have not yet been done. In the 19th century Vlach was spoken by shepherds in Albania who had practically no relationship with Hellenism as well as by urban Macedonians who had Greek education dating back to at least the 17th century and who considered themselves Greek. The latter gave rise to many politicians, literary figures, and national benefactors in Greece. Because of the language, various religious and political special interests tried to attract the Vlachs in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the same time, the Greek church and government were hostile to their language. The disputes of the era culminated in emigrations, alienation of thousands of people, and near-disappearance of the language. Nevertheless, due to assimilation and marriages with Greek speakers, a significant segment of the Greek population in Macedonia and elsewhere descends from Vlachs. -

Jackson School of International Studies ©Copyright 2021 Owen Harris University of Washington Abstract Hellenes and Arabs at Home and Abroad: Greek Orthodox Christians from Aleppo in Athens Owen Harris Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Kathie Friedman Jackson School of International Studies Abstract: In this thesis, I show how communities living together in relative equality in Aleppo, Syria, and fleeing the same conflict, experienced very different outcomes depending on which religious community they belonged to. Members of the Greek Orthodox Christian community from Aleppo who have moved to Athens reported that their new home is exactly the same as the community they left behind. Members of the Muslim community from Aleppo in Athens did not agree with this statement. Why do Greek Orthodox Christians fare so much better than their Muslim compatriots in Greece? I argue that this inequality is a result of opportunities and challenges created by policies instituted during the great unmixing of peoples in the early 20th century and the refugee crisis in the early 21st century. Greek Orthodox Christians are equal citizens in a secular Arab republic that values ecumenism and members of the Greek diaspora in a Hellenic republic that privileges Greek ethno-religious belonging. They are Arab Hellenes, equally Greek and Syrian. Drawing on data collected in interviews with members of the Greek Orthodox Syrian community in Greece, as well as Syrians of different faiths in other countries, I examine what went right for Greek Orthodox Syrians in Athens and suggest policy tools that government and civil society can use to create similar conditions for Muslim Syrians in Greece. -

Political Status of Ethnic Groups in Greece
Greece Ethnicity in Greece Group selection Politics in Greece are based on the image of a unified nation of Greeks. Consequently, the existence of ethnic minorities in Greece is denied by the government. According to the US Department of State, “the government continued to place legal restrictions on the names of associations involving certain ethnic minorities” in 2009 (2153). Freedom House reports continuous concerns regarding the 2153 [US Department of State, 2010] discrimination towards not only minority groups but also immigrants (2154). 2154 [Freedom House, 2020] Even though the government recognizes the right of the individu- als to self-identification, it is difficult for those individuals who define themselves as members of a minority group to express their identity and culture freely (2155). For example, state authorities in Greece 2155 [U.S. Department of State, 2019] have rejected some attempt by various ethnic groups to either get official recognition or register associations which refer to their ethnic identity, thus paralyzing activities regarding the organization and/or advocacy for their political interest. (2156). Due to the hostile state 2156 [Freedom House, 2020] policy, there is no official data on ethnic minorities in Greece. Never- theless, we identify the following ethnic groups as politically relevant in addition to Greeks, Macedonians, Muslims, and Roma. Power relations 1946-2021 Greeks hold a monopoly on power during the entire period. Based on the repressive state policy of denial towards ethnic minorities, all minorities could be considered as discriminated. No ethnic minorities are represented in the cabinet of Greece (2157; 2158). 2157 [Tovima, 2015] In contrast to the other groups, the Turk/Pomak minorities en- 2158 [US Department of State, 2016] joy some degree of political rights due to the status as a combined Muslim minority. -

Heirs to Byzantium: Multidirectional Narrative and Identity Amongst the Istanbul-Greek Migrant Community in Greece Huw Halstead MA (by research) University of York Department of History September 2012 Abstract Social memory has often been treated as a competitive arena in which particular memories connected to particular identities vie for official recognition, the winners suppressing the losers. Against this competitive model, literary scholar Michael Rothberg has argued for a multidirectional approach to the study of memory, which seeks to examine the productive interaction between diverse historical narratives. This thesis tests the literary multidirectional model through the historical study of the Istanbul-Greek migrants to Greece. The Istanbul Greeks were a remnant of pre- national Ottoman pluralism, a Christian minority within Turkey forced to emigrate during the twentieth century due to nationalistic persecution and discrimination. Through the migrants’ oral testimonies, this thesis demonstrates that a multidirectional approach to identity and memory better reflects how the Istanbul Greeks cope with the pressures of migration through a malleable sense of self, and by intricately linking and manipulating a variety of historical discourses in diverse social contexts. Whilst social memories can be employed competitively to establish group exclusivity, they can also be deployed to reach across social divides, and open up group memberships. By addressing multiple, aggravated, and intersecting forms of discrimination,1 the Resolution “(r)ecommends that States continue to reflect on current and emerging challenges facing persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious, and linguistic minorities, including the rise in persecution on religious and ethnic grounds and increasing levels of hate crimes and hate speech targeting, among others, persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities”.2 Indeed, Macedonians fall under these categories as they have been systematically, institutionally, and coercively oppressed.
