Having been born in Greece, and having lived there till my early twenties, it is the place that holds all my childhood memories, my first encounters with dance, my friends, and my family. From a very early age I remember how I always used to say that I wanted to study dance and then move to the US to pursue my dream. Back then I was not sure what that dream was, other than leaving Greece, where I often felt like I did not belong. Being here now, in the US, I think I found it and I must admit that when I first begun my pursuit in graduate studies in dance, I was very hesitant to engage in research concerning Greece. It made me uncomfortable, because it was too personal. Looking back now, I am extremely grateful to all the people who in their way pushed me towards this direction and assisted me in unpacking all the complexities of this project and interrogating my initial personal resistance to it. This tension has been the most fruitful and productive site in this process. First of all I want to express my gratitude to my committee chair and mentor Marta Savigliano, who has been inspiring my work long before we even met. When I graduated from the department of Political Science from the University of Athens, I embarked on a journey as an inexperienced Master’s student to find ways to bridge dance with political science. Browsing through the library I came across her book and it opened a whole new world for me. Having had the opportunity to work with her directly has been an invaluable experience and has pushed my work to new and challenging directions. iv My gratitude is also extended to Linda Tomko and Anthea Kraut, whose scholarship, feedback, and support have been indispensable, not only in the process of working on this project, but in the course of my graduate studies as well. I would also like to thank several other professors that I have worked with in my time at UCR and who have profoundly influenced my work in this project: Susan Ossman, Jens Giersdorf, Jacqueline Shea Murphy and Priya Srinivasan. My doctoral studies would not have been possible without the gracious support that I received from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation in Greece for four years, and the Graduate Division Fellowship from UCR. My fieldwork was supported by a Dissertation Year Program Fellowship from UCR and for that I am also extremely appreciative. In the close to ten months that I returned to Greece for fieldwork I reconnected with old friends and acquaintances and slowly immersed myself in a vibrant network of choreographers, performers, and dance scholars. I am indebted to each and every one of them for welcoming me in their projects, or their houses, for their honesty and feedback, their support, their genuine curiosity in this project, and their willingness to help me any way they could. I cherish all these encounters and look forward to cultivating these relationships further in my next visits. I would most of all like to thank the choreographers and artists whose works inspired and shaped the analytical framework of this research: Chrysiis Liatziviry, Maria Gorgia, Despina Stamos and Jill Woodward, Ermira Goro, Konstantinos Mihos and Panagiotis Andronikidis. I am also grateful to all the Greek dance scholars and professors v who have dedicated their time to creating an infrastructure for dance studies in Greece and who through their pleasant and meticulous narrations helped me shed light to the development of contemporary and folk dance in Greece: Steriani Tsintziloni, who also was my first dance history teacher, Irene Loutzaki, Katia Savrami, Vaso Barbousi, Maria Tsouvala, Anastasia Charmanda and Alkis Raftis. Thank you also to Katia Arfara, the programming director for Dance and Theatre at the Onassis Cultural Center, who in spite of her busy schedule managed to fit me in. Special thanks are extended to scholars, dance reviewers, dancers, and writers in the most popular dance blogs: Tasos Koukoutas and Natalia Koutsougera. Their insight into the Greek dance scene has been very informative and I left every meeting with them full of ideas and renewed enthusiasm to continue writing. The dance photographers, Elpida Tempou, Angeliki Svoronou, and Anna Psaroudakis, whom I have not met in person, but who have agreed to let me use their work; I am so thankful for their openness to my request. In its various stages of development, several excerpts of this project have been presented at various conferences and workshops and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the participants of those events for their engagement, interest, questions, and feedback. These discussions have helped flesh out the nuances of this project. I would like to especially thank the scholars and colleagues I met at the Mellon Summer Seminar for Dance Studies at Stanford in June of 2014, whose feedback has significantly assisted me in framing and clarifying the ideas discussed in the second chapter. Sherril Dodds, Tommy vi DeFrantz, Susan Manning, and Susan Foster in particular, who by posing a few simple questions helped me deepen my explorations and better my writing. In its early stages this research was primarily concerned with the discursive distinction between Hellenism and Greekness but through discussions and continuous reframing it came to be what you have in your hands now. A glimpse into this project’s early stages of development, which gave birth to some of the questions discussed in chapter one, has been published under the title “Appropriations of Hellenism: A Reconsideration of Early Twentieth Century American Physical Culture Practices” in Choros International Dance Journal, 3 (Spring 2014), pp. 50–68. An excerpt from the third chapter “Bodies of Silence and Resilience: Writing Marginality” will appear in the 2015 CORD conference proceedings. My fieldwork in Athens has been facilitated by the staff at the National Library, the Library of the Lyceum of Greek Women, and the Library of the National School of Dance. Although the sources on dance in Greece are limited, their suggestions and assistance has made the process of digging through these archives a lot easier and more pleasant. During my time in Athens, most of my close friends had been abroad for either work or graduate study and I only saw them sporadically, but they still supported me in this process and accompanied me to performances whenever they could. For this I would especially like to thank my friend Kostas who accompanied me to several performances, and assisted me by proof-reading translations from scholarly sources and interviews from Greek to English. Also, Alexandra, who I could always count on for double-checking inconsistencies and verifying historical sources. vii This process would have not been nearly as enjoyable without the support of my grad school ‘family’, namely my UCR cohort and colleagues. Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania.

    MUSIC AND TRADITIONS OF THRACE (GREECE): A TRANS-CULTURAL TEACHING TOOL 1 Kalliopi Stiga 2 Evangelia Kopsalidou 3 Abstract: The geopolitical location as well as the historical itinerary of Greece into time turned the country into a meeting place of the European, the Northern African and the Middle-Eastern cultures. Fables, beliefs and religious ceremonies, linguistic elements, traditional dances and music of different regions of Hellenic space testify this cultural convergence. One of these regions is Thrace. The aim of this paper is firstly, to deal with the music and the dances of Thrace and to highlight through them both the Balkan and the middle-eastern influence. Secondly, through a listing of music lessons that we have realized over the last years, in schools and universities of modern Thrace, we are going to prove if music is or not a useful communication tool – an international language – for pupils and students in Thrace. Finally, we will study the influence of these different “traditions” on pupils and students’ behavior. Key words: Thrace; music; dances; multi-cultural influence; national identity; trans-cultural teaching Resumo: A localização geopolítica, bem como o itinerário histórico da Grécia através do tempo, transformou o país num lugar de encontro das culturas europeias, norte-africanas e do Médio Oriente. Fábulas, crenças e cerimónias religiosas, elementos linguísticos, danças tradicionais e a música das diferentes regiões do espaço helénico são testemunho desta convergência cultural. Uma destas regiões é a Trácia. O objectivo deste artigo é, em primeiro lugar, tratar da música e das danças da Trácia e destacar através delas as influências tanto dos Balcãs como do Médio Oriente.

This Christmas DODONI will continue to support and contribute to the local community by offering the children of the Dourachani Monastery orphanage a large quantity of pure fresh milk, with the taste of good, love and contribution. It will also donate products to ELEPAP - Rehabilitation For the Disabled - in Athens, Thessaloniki and Ioannina as well as providing financial support to FLOGA - Parents Association of Children with Cancer. It is worth mentioning that in 2017 the company made available over 110 tons of DODONI products to organisations, institutions and NGOs, that care for victims of the Greek crisis, throughout Greece. Mr. Michalis Panagiotakis, Deputy CEO of DODONI, made the following statement: ''We take great joy in implementing corporate social responsibility activities centred on man and the local community and we will continue along this same path, supporting practical initiatives that focus on solidarity, contribution, and love for our fellow citizens''.

Amateurboyz Amateurboyz, Spiros Pliatsikas and Thodoris Dimitropoulos, are a DJ-crew and party collective. For a decade they’ve been one of the most influential contributors to the underground scene in Athens presenting art, music and live events in obscure venues throughout the city. Their organic take on music and DYI-culture has also brought them to several venues across Europe (London, Berlin, Belgrade, Florence, Istanbul, Moscow) and international acclaim. Giorgio Andreotta Calò Giorgio Andreotta Calò research developed though a process of withdrawing fragments from reality and the re-appropriation of architecture, landscape and his own history. His artworks may be interpreted as “active residues” of processes and actions that have take place in a specific time and space. Born in Venice in 1979, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia (1999-2005) and at the KunstHochSchule Berlin (2003-2004).

    23tmp09a.qxd 04/04/2002 14:43 Page 143 9 The Establishment and Development of the Metaxas Dictatorship in the Context of Fascism and Nazism, 193641 MOGENS PELT In October 1935, Italy launched a fully-fledged attack on Abyssinia, threatening Britains position in Egypt and the supremacy of the Royal Navy in the eastern Mediterranean. Three years later, in 1938, Germany established her dominance over Central Europe in a series of short-of-war operations, incorporating Austria and the Sudetenland into the Reich by Anschluss and the Munich agreement. The dismemberment of Czechoslovakia dealt a fatal blow to the French security system in south-eastern Europe, la petite entente with Prague serving as its regional power centre. While the credibility of France as a great power almost completely eroded overnight, Vienna and Prague suddenly provided ready-made platforms to an invigorated and resurgent Germany to project her power into south- eastern Europe, and to rearrange that area in line with Berlins plans for a new European Order. This, in turn, gave a boost to national vindication in the revisionist states, Bulgaria and Hungary, while it generated shock waves of national insecurity and internal instability in the status quo states, Greece, Romania and Yugoslavia. On 10 October 1935, only a week after the beginning of Mussolinis African enterprise, a military coup détat in Greece reinstated the monarchy, which had been abolished in the wake of the First World War, and some ten months later, on 4 August 1936, King George II established what was meant to be a permanent dictatorship under the leadership of General Ioannis Metaxas, a prominent royalist.

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies.

    by Konstantinou, Evangelos Precipitated primarily by the study of ancient Greece, a growing enthusiasm for Greece emerged in Europe from the 18th century. This enthusiasm manifested itself in literature and art in the movements referred to as classicism and neoclassicism. The founda- tions of contemporary culture were identified in the culture of Greek antiquity and there was an attempt to learn more about and even revive the latter. These efforts manifested themselves in the themes, motifs and forms employed in literature and art. How- ever, European philhellenism also had an effect in the political sphere. Numerous societies were founded to support the cause of Greek independence during the Greek War of Independence, and volunteers went to Greece to join the fight against the Ottoman Empire.
