According to Cathedral Dean Fr. Ste- phen Kyriacou, the exterior of the new cathedral should be completed in about a year, with the interior to be ready by 2017. In the early ‘90s the old cathedral was demolished and parishioners have been using the facility next door (visible in pic- ture) which contains a chapel, temporary classrooms offices and the Bishop Anthony Hall. Permits to rebuild were issued in 2013, 24 years to the date of the Oct. 17, 1989 disaster. Fr. Stephen noted that Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios – who came to San Francisco in 1990 during his U.S. visit and toured the area of the demolished cathedral – told Bishop Andonios “this is the site where the cathedral will be built.” Total cost of the project will be about $13 million, Fr. Stephen noted, adding that San Francisco has been experiencing “the largest building boom in decades” but that rising costs have made the city “almost unaffordable.” The cathedral is the only house of worship being built in the city. Modeled after ’s Church of Hagia Eirine, with echos of the Great Church (Hagia Sophia), the new Cathedral is in the shape of a Greek Cross, with an apse and the narthex bringing it Orthodox Observer photos to 165 feet in length.
