Message From Ike Gulas AHEPA Supreme President

Happy New Year!

promises to be an ambitious, yet memorable year for the AHEPA 2008Family, as we prepare for two very important events that will celebrate Hellenism and our place in American society. First, our 38th Biennial Banquet will be held March 7, 2008, in our nation’s capital. Once again, we aspire to make our mark in Washington as a vibrant, germane, and salient constituency, and we need your help and participation to make our efforts a success. AHEPA we will be planning a day to visit our legisla- Ike Gulas tors on Capitol Hill to create awareness and educate them about issues of impor- tance to the community. We will also share with them how we work to strengthen our communities through our volunteerism. Our banquet will promise to be an inspirational program as we will honor excellence in the community. Our second major initiative is the 2008 Supreme Convention, which we are holding in , Greece, for the first time in more than 30 years. This will truly be a defining moment for the AHEPA Family and the American Hellenic community as a whole. I believe we will set a tone for the future of Hellenism from which future generations will prosper and benefit. For example, the actual convention dates, July 1-7, will be flanked by our recently revived and highly successful “Journey to Greece” Program for college scholars. Moreover, there will be opportunities abound for families to explore, take-in, and become one with their ancestral heri- tage. I can’t wait to bring my family, and I implore you to do the same and join us in Athens. Please contact AHEPA Headquarters, or visit www.ahepa.org, if you need more information about these two events. Furthermore, I am pleased to report that our “Caravan” grassroots initiative has been well-received. We are working hard to outreach to our chapters from the national level to provide them with the one-on-one interaction, support, and encouragement needed to successfully fulfill our organization’s mission, and recruit new members, at the crucial grassroots level. Our latest “Caravan” effort took us through Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Chicago. I’m so proud of the work our volunteer members perform in their communities on a daily basis. I look forward to taking the “Caravan” to other parts of the United States in 2008. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to offer my sincere condolences as we lost two invaluable members of our organization in December. Supreme Governor George Pantazelos passed away suddenly. Brother Pantazelos was an enthusiastic member who relished giving of his time and resources to such important charitable endeavors as Cooley’s Anemia and our scholarship programs. Also in December, we lost a lifelong friend and ardent supporter of AHEPA in businessman/philanthropist George Paraskevaides. Brother Paraskevaides, who we honored recently by establishing the George E. Paraskevaides Philanthropy Award, spent a lifetime helping improve the lives of others, especially his fellow Cypriots, in a selfless manner from which we can all learn and emulate. Both brothers will be sorely missed. May their memories be eternal.

I cannot begin to thank you enough for awarding me such an incredible scholarship. I am extremely honored to receive an award of this prestige and stature, and am even flattered by the faith you have put into my academic goals. Dear AHEPA Greek Fire Relief,

Hello. My home-schooling group had a Greek Olympic day. It was really fun. My family decided that it would be great if we could donate money to Greece. Then we thought of the wild fires. We looked up AHEPA on the internet. We made a box. We took the box to Olympic day. A few people gave us money and we donated some ourselves. Hope you like it.

In the early nineteenth century, an English nobleman embarked on a tour of the sites of . He brought as his guide a primer on Greek myths written by his friend Lady Hestia Evans, a devotee of Lord Byron who had recently taken the same voyage. In the true Romantic spirit, Lady Hestia’s book was not only lavishly illustrated but also boasted many paper crafts and novelties, including a card game featuring the , an oak-leaf oracle of Zeus, a pop-up Pandora’s box (with hope still inside), a booklet retelling the tale of , a piece of the Golden Fleece, a gold OBOLOS coin to pay the ferryman on the River Styx, and many more flaps, fold- outs, and other surprises. The nobleman added his own witty comments and drawings along the way, but seems to have wished for something odd at the Delphic oracle: as the book nears its end, it slowly begins to turn…to gold. Now, for lovers of Greek myths and those just discovering their timeless power, this fas- cinating volume is faith- fully reproduced with all its Romantic ambience, clever wit and novelty features intact. Presenting the newest discovery in the series with the Midas touch — a mythi- cal exploration fit for the gods.
