Sinar Rollfilm Holder $nar 2. SafetyRules

In this Ghapter ...

In thischapter you find information about preventing dam- age to yourSinar Rollfilm Holder and aboutpreventing loadedfilm from being fogged.

Fundamentals

Theseoperating instructions should be studiedthoroughly to ensure correct and economicallyoptimum use of your Sinar RollfilmHolder. We must declineany responsibility for damagescaused by improperuse of the rollfilmholder.

Unauthorizeddisassembly or modificationof the product voids all guarantees of the rollfilm holder. Conversions and modificationsof a Sinar RollfilmHolder may only be performedby authorizedSinar repairfacilities. Addresses of such authorizedrepair stations can be obtained from the SINAR distributorin your country.

The Sinar RollfilmHolder should only be used for its intendedpurpose on appropriateview cameras.

Protection from Fogging

To avoid exposingof the film unintentionally, the darkslide (15) should only be drawn just before the photographis taken and insertedagain immediatelyafterwards. Drawingthe darkslideon a loadedholder while the is open resultsin the loss of an imageand the film.

The Sinar RollfilmHolder Zoom2 is equippedwith a pin that prevents the darkslide from being drawn until the holder is insertedinto the camera back. lf that pin is depressedwhile the holder is not positioned in a camera, the darkslidecan still be pulledout, which will result in an unintentionalexposure of the loadedfilm.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder $nar

lf there is a film loadedin the rollfilmholder, and if this film has not yet been completelywound onto the take-up spool, the rollfilmholder should not be opened, even thoughit is possibleto do so. Openingthe rollfilmholder wouldcause unwanted fogging of the film and lossof the exposureson that film.

Special Notices

lf any one of the functionsappears to be blocked, press the resetbutton (18). Whatever the circumstances,do not use force!

The rollfilmholder must not come in contactwith wateror with any chemicals.Extra care should be taken while handlingthe rollfilmholder in the laboratoryto avoidany photographicchemicals being sprayed on the holder.

Pullingup the darkslidewhile RolllilmHolder Zoom 2 is not positionedin a camera bares the masking blades. Theseblades must not be touchedby fingersor any other item, because that may resultin damage.

The rollfilmholder should not be used in temperatures below-15'C (5'F) or above+55 "C (131'F), because that may causedamage to the film.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder $nar 3. ProductDescription

ln this Ghapter ...

This chapterdescribes the basicfeatures of Sinar Rollfilm Holders, the applicationsfor which they were designed, limitationsof use, product componentsand availableac- cessories.

Overview

Sinar RollfilmHolders make it possibleto use rollfilmsin Sinar view cameras and in numerous other cameras. Thanksto its specialdesign, the SinarRollfilm Holder can be insertedbetween the focusingscreen and the back of the camerajust like a conventionalfilm holder.Working with the Sinar RollfilmHolder is significantlyeasier be- cause it is no longer necessaryto remove the focusing screen holder from the camera. SinarRollfilm Holder Zoom 2 has the additionalbenefit of the choice of five differentpicture formats. With a single flick of the wrist, the format can be adjustedin five steps rangingfrom 4.5 x 6 cm to 6 x 12 cm. That eliminatesthe needfor acquiringa separaterollfilm holder for each one of the picture formats. The picture format can also be changed without the loss of a picture when the rollfilm holderis loadedwith film.

Usable Film Sizes

Sinar RollfilmHolders are designedfor use with all 120- and 220-size rollfilms.

Pieture Formats / Number of Exposures

Actualpicture format dimensions usually are very slightly smaller than the internationallystandardized format dimensions(see table on the nextpage)

Sinar Rollfilm Holder 13 $nar

The numberof picturesthat can be made on a roll of film dependson two factors:the pictureformat and the rollfilm size (120 or 22Q).The followingtable lists the actual formatdimensions and the numberof picturesthat can be made on a singleroll of film:

Rollfilm Actual Format No.of Pictures, No.of Pictures, Holder: Dimensions: 120-sizeRollfilm 220-sizeRollfilm 6x9cm 56x88mm I 16 6x7cm 56x70mm 10 20 Zoom2 4,5xGcm 56x42mm to 32 6xOcm 56x56mm 12 24 6x7cm 56x70mm 10 20 6x9cm 56x88mm 8 to 6 x 12cm 56x 112mm 6 12

ff the pictureformat in RollfilmHolder Zoom 2 is changed in mid-roll,the numberof pictureson that roll will differ from the numberlisted in the abovetable.

Application

Sinar RollfilmHolders can be used with nearly all view camerasequipped with the internationallystandardized 4x5"11Ox12.5cm cameraback. Since the rollfilmholder is insertedbetween the focusing screen and the film holderseat, the focusingscreen frame must be ableto be liftedby at least2.5 cm (1")away from the film holderseat in order to accommodatethe rollfilm holder between them.

Limitations

SinarRollfilm Holders can only be usedon internationally standardized4x5"110x12.5 cm camerabacks.

lf the space between the focusing screen and the film holderseat cannot be expandedto at least 2.5 cm (1"), the Sinar RollfilmHolder Zoom2 cannotbe used. The 6 x 9 cm and 6 x 7 cm RollfilmHolders are equipped with Graflockgrooves, so that they can be attachedto the

Sinar Rollfilm Holder $nar

film holder seat with the Graflocksliders when the focus- ing screen frame is removed.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder $nar 4, Usingthe RollfilmHolder

In this Ghapter...

This chapterdescribes how your Sinar RollfilmHolder is used correctly. This covers in particularthe loadingof rollfilminto the holder, advancing the film, unloadingan exposedfilm, as well as changingthe pictureformat in SinarRollfilm Holder Zoom2.

When you openthe fold-outpage at the beginningof this instructionmanual, all the operatingelements identified with code numbersare visibleat a qlance.

Loading the Film

In orderto load a rollfilm, the film cartridgemust first be removedfrom the rollfilmholder.

Removing the Film Gartridge from the Rollfilm Holder

To removethe film cartridgefrom the rollfilmholder, slide the two cover latches (8) towards the center, then first swingout the uppercover (13) and then the lowercover (11). Pullout the couplingbutton (17) and turn it 90" clockwise. The buttonshould clearly engage in this position. The film cartridgecan now be liftedout verticallyfrom the rollfilmholder (Figure 1). Figure1

Loading the Film Gartridge

Open the loadingflap (3) on the film cartridge. Make sure that there is an emptyfilm spool in the upper (take-up)chamber (2) of the film cartridge.lf necessary, remove the empty film spool from the lower (supply) chamberand installit in the upperchamber.

Sinar RollfilmHolder srnar

Tearooen the seal on the rollfilmand insertthe film into the lower(supply) chamber with the outsideof the backing paperfacing upwards (Figure 2). Next, pull out approximately20 cm (8") of the backing nanar loar'lor

You can write your own notes on the white panel (1) at the top of the film cartridge(such as film type,, Figure2 subject, date, etc.).

Inserting the Film Gartridge into the Rollfilm Holder

Set ihe changeoverlever to "load" (Figure3). (On empty filmcartridges, this levershould always be set on "load").

Figure3

Swingthe film pressureplate (10) into a verticalposition. The plateengages audibly in this position(Figure 4).

Bend the first 2 cm Fl4") of the backingpaper leader slightlyupwards (in the directionof its outside). This will make it easierto threadthe backingpaper into the rollfilm holder. Insertthe filmcartridge into the rollfilm holderf rom above. gentlepressure to make sure that the film cartridge Figure4 Use has seated properly. Aciuate the film advance lever (14) until the coupling button(17) popsback intoits originalposition. Threadthe backingpaper leader under the meteringroller (9),then pull ii throughunder the returnroller (12) (Figure4). Swingthe film pressureplate (10) backdown again. Figure5

Carefully pull out the backingpaper until the broaddouble arrow on iis back side lines up with the white indiceson the rollfilmholder (Figures 5 and 6).

w$lwFigure6

Sinar RollfilmHolder $nar

Thread the tongue of the backingpaper leaderinto the slot in the take-upspool (2). Pressthe resetbutton (18) and gentlyactuate the film advancelever (14) just enough to take up the slack.(Figure 7). Caution: Make sure that the film is centered, otherwise it may wind up skewed on the take-up spool. After threading, the film should only be mildly taught. Figure7 The film advance lever should never be actuated to the point where additionalfilm is drawn out of the cartridge! Firstclose the lowercover'{11), and then the uppercover (13). Push the upper lid down firmly and slide the two cover latches(8) outwardsuntil the red markingsare no longervisible.

Advancing the Film to the first Picture

Afterclosing the rollfilmholder, the film mustbe advanced to the first picture. To do so, push the reset button(18) and actuatethe film advance lever (14) until it blocks. Whenthe firstpicture is in place, the letters"EXP" appear in the film meteringwindow (7) (Figure8). Turnthe changeoverlever to "exp" (Figure9). Switchingthe changeoverlever to "exp"activates the film Figure8 meteringmechanism in SinarRollfilm Holder Zoom 2 and the exposurecounter in Sinar RollfilmHolders 6 x 9 cm andGxTcm.

lf this step is omitted, there will be no automatic stop while advancing to the next picture.

The Sinar RollfilmHolder is now loaded and readv for Figure9 makingthe first .

Making the Exposures

Makingexposures on film in rollfilmholders is basically similarto makingexposures on sheetfilm in conventional film holders: Insertthe rollfilmholder into the camera, close the shutter, set the ,draw the darkslide, make the exposure, pushthe darkslideback in.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder smar lnserting the Rollfilm Holder into the Back of the Gamera

Use one hand to lift the focusingscreen frame and with the other hand insert the rollfilmholder into the space between the film holder seat and the focusino frame holder(Figure 10).

Sincea rollfilmholder is thickerthan a conventionalsheet film holder,it is desirableto removethe focusingscreen framewith its mechanism(when there is one). That would preventany significantand unintentionalchange in cam- era adjustments.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder Zoom 2= Sinar RollfilmHolder Zoom 2 can only be usedon cameras on which the focusing screen frame lifts off by at least 2.5 cm (1") from the film holderseat. Figure10 Sinar Rollfilm Holders 6 x 9 cm and 6 x 7 cml Sinar RollfilmHolders 6 x g cm and 6 x 7 cm can also be usedon camerason whichthe maximumdisplacement of the focusingscreen frame from the film holderseat is less than2.5 cm (1").

Whenthat is the case, the focusingscreen frame must be removed. The rollfilmholder is then attachedto the film holderseat by meansof the Graflocksliders.

Making the Exposures

Beforemaking the exposure, the camera'sshutter must be closed and the apertureset to the requiredstop. Then the darkslide(16) is drawn until it is blockedand then the shutteris released.

Next,the darkslide(16) is reinserted.

It is also possibleto releasethe shutterwhen the dark- slide is not drawn or only partiallydrawn. This causesa blankor a frameon whichonly a portionof an imagehas been exposed.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder snar

Film Advance

After an exposurehas been made, the film advancemech- anismbecomes functional by pushingthe resetbutton (19), The film can then be advancedto the next pictureby using the film advance lever (14).The film advance lever will block automaticallywhen the next picture is reached.

A film advanceis possibleat any time, even when the darkslide is drawn. But this is advisable only in excep- tional situations(as in stepped exposures). For the sake of safety, one should always reinsert the darkslide and advancethe film immediatelyafter every exposure. Minorvariations in the spacingbetween pictures are normal.

Indication of Film Length

Sinar Rollfilm Holder Zoom 2t Since the pictureformat can be changed at any time in a SinarRollfilm Holder Zoom2, it is not feasibleto indicate the applicablenumber for each picture. For that reason, the film meteringwindow (7) does not displaythe number of exposedpictures, but the remaininglength (in cm) of unexposedfilm (Figure11). The lengthof unexposedfilm availablewhen the film has been advancedto the first frame is approx. 150 cm (60") Figure11 wFigure12 tor 22O-sizerollfilm (left half of the meteringwindow), and approx. 75 cm (30") for 12O-sizerollfilm (right half of the meteringwindow). When the remainingfilm has been used up, the letter"L" will appear in the half of the film meteringwindow that correspondsto the film sizethat is beingused (Figure 12). The number of picturesthat can be made on a roll of film (withoutchanging the picture format) is listed in a table on page 14, in chapter 3: Product Description.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder 6 x 9 cm and 6 x 7 cm: On SinarRollfilm Holders 6 x 9 cm and 6 x 7 cm, the num- ber of exposed pictures can be read directly in the film meteringwindow (7) (Figure13). After the last exposure, the letter "L" will appear in the half of the film meteringwindow that correspondsto the film size (120or 220).The colorof the displaywill change äwFigure13 Figure14 simultaneouslyfrom greento red (Figure14).

Sinar Rollfilm Holder smar Unloading the Film

When the entire film has been exposed (the letter "L" is displayedin the film meteringwindow), or whena partially exposedfilm is to be removed, the changeoverlever (19) hasto be set on "load"(Figure 15). The film advance lever (14)should then be usedto advancethe film untilno more Figure15 resistanceis felt.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder Zoom 2= When the end of the backing paper trailer has been woundthrough, the scalewith the gray backgroundin the film meteringwindow changes to white.

Sinar Rollfilm Holders 6 x 9 cm and 6 x 7 cm: When the end of the backing paper trailer has been woundthrough, the scalewith the red backgroundin the film meteringwindow changes to yellow.

Open the rollfilmholder and lift the film cartridgeout as described on page 16 under Removing the Film Cartridge from the Rollfilm Holder. Take the rollfilmout of the film cartridgeand immediately secure it with the seal providedat the end of the backing paper. Removethe emptyfilm spoolfrom the lower(supply) cham- ber (6) and place it in the upper (take-up)chamber (2).

Ghanging FOfmatS (ontyRoltritmHotder zoom2)

ln SinarRollfilm Holder Zoom 2, the pictureformat can be changedat any time - even when the holderis loaded with film. First use the film advance lever (14) to wind the film on to the next picture. Then press the reset button (18). Now the desired pictureformat can be selectedby using the formatselector knob (16).

The followingpoints should be observed: When changingto a smallerformat, there will be a larger spacing between picturesjust once.

Sinar Rollfilm Holder 21 smar

When changingto a largerIormat, the film will advance automaticallywith spacingscorresponding to the new for- mat, so that the pictureswill not overlap.

lf the formatselector knob is turnedback and forth several times withouta picturebeing taken, the film is advanced a little bit each time. The resultis that the film may no longeryield the accustomednumber of pictures.

Format Masks

Croppingthe focusingscreen image to the size of the pictureformat being used is accomplishedby means of format masks

Sinar Rollfilm Holder Zoom 2= On Sinar cameraswe recommendthe use of the Vario Mask that is suppliedwith the rollfilmholder (Figure 16). This masksfits on the studsof the Sinar FresnelScreen Holder4 x 5"110x 12.5cm 461.76. On other cameras, the UniversalMask suppliedwith the rollfilmholder or the set of four masks 534.12(see Äcces- sories, page 15) can be used. They can be attachedto the focusingscreen by meansof double-sidedadhesive tape. Figure16 Sinar Rollfilm Holders 6 x 9 cm and 6 x 7 cm: The FormatMask suppliedwith the rollfilmholder fits on the studs of the Sinar Fresnel Screen Holder 4x5"1 10x 12.5cm 461.76. On other camerasthe mask can be attachedto the focus- ing screenby meansof double-sidedadhesive tape.

Using Format Masks as Viewing and Aids

Format masks also serve as very practicalaids for handy visualizationof cropping.Simply hold the mask (set for the appropriateformat) in front of one eye and view the subjectthrough it (Figure17). The distancebetween the mask and the eye is approximatelyequal to the focal lengthof the lensthat is neededfor obtainingthe desired cropprng.

Figure17

Sinar Rollfilm Holder snar Depth of Field Scale

The circles of confusion that apply to medium formats from 4.5 x 6 cm to 6 x 12 cm are smallerthan those that apply to 4x5"/1Ox12.5 cm and larger. When rollfilm holdersare used, the aperturestops read on the depth of field scale have to be corrected, unless special scales for the smaller formats are being used. Such scalestailored to Sinar p2 camerasare availableas accessories(see Accessorles, page 15).

Otherwisethe followingcorrections should be made (the aperture must be closed by the following number of stops):

Depth of field scale for: Correction: approximatelyOx9cm none 4x5"110x 12.5cm 1 stop 5 x7"113x 18cm 2 stops I x 1O"l2Ox 25 cm 3 stops

Gomparing Focal Lengths

Changingthe pictureformat while retaining the same lens also changesthe .The smallerthe format, the narrowerthe angle of view. When a rollfilmholder is being used, this fact has to be taken into account in the selectionof a . The followingtable compares the angles of view for various combinationsof formats and focal lengths:
