  • Five Brazil: Spreading the Message
Five BRAZIL: SpREADING THE MESSAGE illiam Grant Bangerter was excited to return to Brazil. When President Stephen L. Richards of Wthe First Presidency called in October 1958 to set up an appointment to visit, Bangerter felt impressed he would be returning to Brazil. He knew President Asael T. Sorensen had been in Brazil for several years as president of the Brazilian Mission and a change in leadership would probably occur soon. The possibility of going back to his old mission to direct the missionary work in Brazil was something he was pleased to ac- cept. His mission prior to World War II was a time pleasantly remembered often, since he met with a group of former mis- sionary friends almost on a monthly basis. His wife, Geraldine Brazil: Spreading the Message (Geri), and their children were excited at the prospect of going to a place they had heard so much about.1 There were concerns, however. His mission to Brazil from 1939 to 1941 had been unusually challenging in spite of his love for the country and the people. At that time the Church was struggling to change the language of the mission from German to Portuguese. The missionaries were faithful and worked hard but expe- rienced only limited success. President Bangerter had seen few baptisms result from nearly three years of work. Most of the branches were new, and there was not enough local leadership to direct the work. Many of the faithful members were female and could not provide priesthood leadership for the Church. The missionar- William Grant and Geraldine Bangerter ies did almost everything.

  • 1 Nov 4-10 Hebrews 1-6 Jesus Christ
Nov 4-10 Hebrews 1-6 Jesus Christ, “the Author of Eternal Salvation” OVERVIEW: Recording spiritual impressions helps you recognize what the Holy Ghost wants to teach you. Acting on your impressions demonstrates your faith that those promptings are real. Record your impressions: ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ SCRIPTURES: Hebrews 1 Author and Date: Since about A.D. 400 the book of Hebrews has traditionally been ascribed to Paul. There are, however, some who question Paul’s authorship of this Epistle because its style and language are so different from Paul’s other letters. It is generally agreed that even if the pen was not Paul’s, the ideas were, because the doctrines in Hebrews agree with those found in Paul’s other letters. When the Prophet Joseph Smith made inspired revisions of the Bible he did not question Paul’s authorship. For instance, the Prophet taught: It is said by Paul in his letter to the Hebrew brethren, that Abel obtained witness that he was righteous. TPJS, 59. The dating of this Epistle is also uncertain. But since Hebrews makes no mention of the destruction of the temple, which occurred in A.D. 70, and always refers to the temple in the present tense, it is assumed this letter was written before that time. Also, if Paul was the author, it must have been written before his death in about A.D. 65. Audience: This Epistle draws heavily on Old Testament themes and practices. Therefore it is likely that the intended audience was Jewish (Hebrew) Christians. Historical Background: As we have seen in Acts and in the Epistles we have already studied, there was often sharp disagreements between gentile and Jewish Christians over whether or not Saints were subject to the law of Moses.

  • The Remarkable Administration of Spencer W. Kimball
Lengthening Our Stride: The Remarkable Administration of Spencer W. Kimball BYU Studies copyright 1985 BYU Studies copyright 1985 Lengthening Our Stride: The Remarkable Administration of Spencer W. Kimball Dennis L. Lythgoe When Spencer W. Kimball became President of the Church in Decem- ber 1974, many people wondered whether he would be adequate to the task. The charismatic, forceful Harold B. Lee had seemed indomitable, and the brevity of his tenure as President was difficult to accept. President Kim- ball seemed physically frail. He had undergone open heart surgery only twenty months before assuming the mantle of prophet. Earlier he had lost one vocal cord and part of the other to cancer of the throat. Since then, he spoke with great difficulty. Little wonder, then, that some foresaw a stalled period in Church history under a caretaker administration. In an October 1977 conference address, Elder William Grant Bangerter of the First Quorum of the Seventy looked back on those difficult days. He described an uncomfortable period among the Saints as they mourned the loss of President Lee and struggled to accept the new prophet: “We knew, of course, that he would manage somehow, until the next great leader arose, but it would not be easy for him, and things would not be the same. ‘O Lord,’ we prayed, ‘please bless President Kimball. He needs all the help you can give him.’” According to Elder Bangerter, all of that charged miraculously on 4 April 1984, when “a new awareness” fell on the General Authorities and 1974, when “a new awareness” fell on the General Authorities and Regional Rep- resentatives as they listened to an address by President Kimball: We became alert to an astonishing spiritual presence, and we realized that we were listening to something unusual, powerful, different from any of our previous meetings.

THE SWISS IN UTAH Pre-1896 pioneer midwife Hilda Erickson in 1965 Beginning in the mid-1850s, Swiss immigrants, virtually all converts from early successful Mormon proselytizing in their homeland, began arriving in the Utah territory. They became part of two larger immigrant streams: one composed of thousands--by the year 1900, some 115,000--of fellow Swiss who, beginning in colonial times, had found new homes in the United States; and other, the so-called "Gathering to Zion," the organized emigration of thousands of European Mormon converts, mostly from Protestant countries, in the last half of the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth century. These Swiss emigrants traveled to Utah by various means--on sailing ships and steamships, by covered wagons, handcarts, and eventually the railroad--to help settle several hundred communities in the "Great Basin Kingdom" of the Rocky Mountain West. Only a very few of them acquired any lasting fame; but they were, in general, industrious, disciplined, and productive people, surprisingly well satisfied with their new arid homeland. Only an occasional disillusioned soul returned home, while a few others like Henrik Hug and his brothers and their families lost faith in Mormonism and its leaders and moved elsewhere. By the mid-nineteenth century migration and emigration were well established elements of Swiss demographic life, with over 70 percent of the emigrants choosing the United States as their destination. Throughout much the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, religious dissatisfaction, periodic economic crises, and local overpopulation joined 1 of 8 with alluring propaganda for America as the "land of unlimited opportunities" and the powerful testimonials of earlier emigrant families and friends to entice Swiss from virtually every canton to the United States, where they truly became part of the "melting pot." By the twentieth century, as the Swiss economy, undecimated by world wars, moved toward world-leading levels of prosperity, and as the U.S.
