An initial approach …

(August 2008) Adalet Barış Günersel, B.A., Oberlin College Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Stephanie Knight This study investigates socio-cultural factors that impact the lives of highly creative writers, specifically, novelists in a specific socio-cultural context, Turkey. Research objectives included the investigation of the definition of creativity, creative processes and products by highly creative Turkish writers, and socio-cultural factors that influenced the development of their creativity. The qualitative case study was used and interviews with four participants, or cases, shed light onto the focus of the study. Four novelists who fit certain criteria were selected: (a) they have invented, designed, and produced creative work regularly and their work has influenced Turkish literature; (b) they were Turkish citizens who have lived 75% of their lives in Turkey and received their education in Turkey; and (c) they varied in age and gender.

This thesis explores and evaluates the representation of ethnic minorities in Turkish fiction against a background of demographic, political, and social change. Within this context, novels and short stories of selected writers have been studied with a view to determining differences of experience, perception and attitude. The writers include: Huseyin Rahmi Giirpmar, Halide Edip Adivar, Re§at Nuri Guntekin, Halikarnas Bahk9isi, Orhan Kemal, Haldun Taner, Sait Faik, and Ya§ar Kemal. The thesis comprises an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction gives a brief overview of historical events relating to demographic changes and ethnic minority status, and looks at the popular perception of minorities in the Ottoman performance arts.

  • The Exchange of Populations in Turkish Literature
The Exchange of Populations in Turkish Literature First published in Crossing the Aegean, An Appraisal on the 1923 Compulsory Populations Exchange Between Greece and Turkey , Edit. Renee Hirschon, New York & Oxford, Berghahn Books, 2003. The Exchange of Populations in Turkish Literature THE UNDERTONE OF TEXTS [1] Hercules Millas In spite of the reciprocal aspect of the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, the event is reflected differently in the literary texts of the two countries. In this analysis, I concentrate on Turkish novels and short stories related to the forced exchange, with only occasional references to Greek literature in order to highlight the differences. Of those differences the most striking is the limited appearance of the event in Turkish literature. I maintain that this is mainly owing to political reasons. In addition, the way the two societies perceive themselves also plays a role. In Turkish literature the predominant sense is that of belonging to a strong and sovereign central state. This contrasts with Greek literature in which the sense of a motherland – closely associated with a family home, personal memories and the ‘space’ of a small local community – is more keenly expressed. Silence: the exchange in the Turkish novel, 1923–1980 1 / 21 The Exchange of Populations in Turkish Literature This study is based on 290 randomly selected novels and 60 volumes of short stories of 105 Turkish writers published in the years between 1923 and 1998. [2] The analysis shows that in the years from1923 to 1980, and especially until 1960, the references to the exchange are very few and mostly indirect.

BUKET CENGİZ Leiden University, Institute for Area Studies S1108743 1 INTRODUCTION Background and Central Question I started working on the proposal for this dissertation in September 2010, at the beginning of the last quarter of a year that had been spent in celebrations of Istanbul 2010, European Capital of Culture. There were numerous events in the city – concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, panel discussions and so forth. From outside, everything looked fine; Istanbul 2010 seemed to mesh in a perfect way with the city’s acceleration on the list of the hip cities of the world. On the other hand, things were not that positive for those who were being pushed out of a rapidly gentrifying city centre. Neighbourhoods such as Sulukule were being removed from the memory of the city, rents and flat prices were getting higher and higher, while in numerous neighbourhoods, people were living in anxious expectation of urban transformation projects. This made me think about these people who were suffering the most because of the drastic changes, as Istanbul was competing in the race to become a global city: these people living in poor neighbourhoods in the city centre, or in ex-shanty-towns which were whetting the appetites of building contractors.

  • Wolfgang Riemann How Has Turkish Literature Been Received In
Wolfgang Riemann How has Turkish Literature been received in Germany? Works translated from Turkish into German up to 2011. In the past, translations of Turkish literature were rare in Germany, some times barely two or three books per year. Interested readers were familiar almost only with the satirical writer Aziz Nesin (1915-1995), with the writer of novels Yaşar Kemal {born 1922) or the poet Nâzım Hikmet {1902- 1963). A new, bilingual selection of Hikmet's poetry has been published in 2008 under the German title "Die Namen der Sehnsucht" ("The Names of Yearn ing") . The volume has been translated by the poet Gisela Kraft; publisher was Ammann Verlag in Zurich. In addition, starting with the seventies of the past century, so-called "Gastarbeiterliteratur" began to appear. This literature, either written by or concerned with migrant workers, who were euphemistically called "guest workers" in Germany often suffered from bad translation. Many of these texts were full of self-pity, which did not make them more popular with German readers. Turkish aspirations to become a full member of the European Union have led to a new focus on "Turkish" topics. Islam attracts much attention in the German media, and Turkey is increasingly regarded as an Islamic country. It is in this context that Turkish literature becomes more and more popular. Therefore, many German publishers started offering Turkish authors: Feridun Zaimoğlu (born 1964) and Emine Sevgi Özdamar (born 1946) are being pub lished by Kiepenheuer & Witsch, Osman Engin (born 1960) by dtv, Yaşar Kemal (born 1922) by the Unionsverlag located in Zurich, Switzerland, and Yade Kara (born 1965) and Esmahan Aykol (born 1970) by Diogenes.
