RUNNYMEDE BOROUGH BOUNTRY AREA Chertsey Life has proved to be highly successful and after only it’s fourth monthly edition has generated an enthusiastic following which we hope will be replicated across the southern parts of Runnymede. Articles of local interest have covered the devastating fire at Chobham Common (a Specially Protected Area), the adoption of the Runnymede Local Plan, Holme Farm Community Workshops and Garden, contributions from our MP, Mayor, Councillors and the Council as well as from local organisations such as the hospital, the police, local societies and museums and from individual experiences – all of which are great sources for quality local news. One added benefit is the fact that Runnymede Life is also available online for download. It is now in the hands of the community to not only enjoy the magazine but to contribute to making it a vital local resource – let’s not waste it! 5 BRIEF HISTORY OF RUNNYMEDE AND THE MAGNA CARTA BY EMMA WARREN CURATOR CHERTSEY MUSEUM (MUSUEM OF RUNNYMEDE BOROUGH)

In the 7th century it was part of the Manor of , held by the Abbot of Chertsey and first written mention of Runnymede is its most famous mention, in Magna Carta itself.

King John came to the throne in April 1199 on the death of his brother, Richard I, and earned himself the reputation of being one of THE MAGNA CARTA HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE the worst monarchs has ever had. This alienated the barons choice. He could not afford to fight a civil war, who then rebelled against the King and tried but he clearly had no intention of adhering to to assassinate him in 1212. By May 1215 the barons had taken London, However, on 18th/19th October 1216, King forcing the royal household to Windsor John died suddenly and a revised version of Castle, before moving west towards Staines. Magna Carta was issued on 12th November. The first recorded horse race at Runnymede was in September 1734. Meetings took place sporadically over the next few years until 1738-39 when a three day meet was held. This event was attended by many members of the aristocracy, which established Egham Races as important social event. However, in 1740 an Act of Parliament seriously restricted horse racing EGHAM RACES POSTER ,10th SEPTEMBER 1822 in England in an attempt to stop absenteeism However, attendance improved again from from work, which stopped the Egham Races 1820 onwards, and by the mid 1830s Egham for 30 years. With aristocracy such as the Duke of Cumberland, Sir Charles Bunbury (who co- founded the Epsom Derby) and Sir John Lade entering horses in the late 1770s Egham Races became a meeting for racing connoisseurs. As racing enthusiasts met to witness the Town Plate or the Ladies Plate races, Egham Races became one of the key social events at which to be seen. In 1790 the Prince of Wales, Prince Regent, entered a horse in the races for the first time, and the presence of royalty made the Races even more popular with the aristocracy. In 1810, the 3rd Earl of Bute, a member of the Coutts banking family, made up numbers at Egham races for a card game with the Prince of Wales. Bute deliberately lost so as to not upstage the Prince, and in return was awarded a royal account for the bank, which is still held to this day.

In Georgian England racing, and gambling, was a past time enjoyed by many, and Egham Races were no exception. There was a wide range of entertainment available at the Races: cock fighting and prize fighting entertained the visitors prior to the races, race balls were held at Windsor Town Hall, and the local innkeepers would set up refreshment stalls to supply the crowds. BY CLLR DEREK COTTY

n these uncertain times, it is natural and logical Ithat we look to our leaders for information, guidance and support. However, thanks to our longstanding constitutional system, we are able to look beyond politicians and scientists for solace and reassurance – to the Queen herself, who represents and embodies, to so many of us, the true heart of our nation; her presence bringing new hope for the future – hope for a speedy return to normality, stability and security – the very same virtues we attribute to Her Majesty. How very exciting then, to learn recently that a Public Holiday, to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, on 5th June 2022 has been declared – as an opportunity for all of us to reunite and openly celebrate together as one national again – hurrah! The lockdown for Covid-19 has affected people differently. Some have had more time to spend painting at home and have been very productive, others have been demotivated by no meetings, demonstrations from professional artists, and training workshops that normally take place each year. Members had hoped to be able to get out-and- about during summer, when the normal outdoor painting sessions take place, many along the riverside and in local beauty spots, but due to the restrictions on numbers of people, sadly that didn’t happen either. Many are also missing the work done within the community, supporting charity events, helping with local special needs group and sharing their love of art with those less fortunate. To try to make up for this lack of physical contact and encourage people to try to get back to normal, RAS WINNER OF THE AUTUMN SHIELD AND JOY OF ART AWARD: decided to hold its Autumn Exhibition online. “Tess, Border Terrier” by Linda Blackwell 12 RUNNYMEDE ART SOCIETY RAS Pop-Up Gallery 90 Egham High Street, TW20 9HF

It was to be performed outdoors to a crowd at the lighting of the beacon on St. Ann’s Hill in June 2015. There would be musicians and dancers as well, but no seating, so we would need to capture and hold the attention of our audience.
